  1. I think that was a good choice. If you aren't crazy about football you should at least like the food. :) My non-sport fan ds went to a renaissance fair today, where some of his nerdy (and D&D group) friends are performing. I'm not sure he even knows there's a Big Game today.
  2. FIL is 90 and called dh in a panic one day because his Kindle Paperwhite was no longer working. He bought a couple of books plus BIL gifted him several but they wouldn't download. He couldn't see them either, even when he turned on the wifi. It turned out that 1. He didn't tell Amazon to send it to the device. 2. He had the Kindle set to view only downloaded books, so he didn't see them in the cloud.
  3. Ack! I checked my email just before going to bed last night and saw that two, TWO books I had on hold came in and were automatically borrowed. Apparently the Overdrive update reset some preferences. I usually want a notice that a hold came in, then I can go an check it out when I'm ready (within the time period it will remain available). I had my February reading plans all set and now this. I downloaded both of them - Song of Solomon and These is My Words - and if it comes down to it I have enough books on my Kindle that I won't have to turn the wifi on if the loan period ends before I read them. Currently reading - Hidden Figures A Place Beyond Courage Three Men in a Boat Alexander Hamilton Listening to - Lab Girl I've finished 11 books so far this year.
  4. I don't think it's better or worse either way. It depends on how you feel.
  5. This sounds like something my husband would like to read. I'm going to tell him about it. He's a WWII buff. I started reading the book last night. I'm sure I'll see the movie but probably not in the theater.
  6. It's really sad when I hear about the suffering of former players. It's especially so for the older ones who played before many of the long term effects were even known.
  7. It looks like Saturday is a good day for several of us. I did cardio, abs work, and flexibility/stretching exercises. It also looks like I'll get my steps in for the day as well. And I did a short breathing meditation.
  8. You're not alone. :D Highly pro. It's one of the few areas where I disagree with him.
  9. I used to be a huge fan of football. When we first got married dh was the football widow, not me. I'm not sure how I lost interest. I think it was that while keeping up with a very active toddler (at the time undiagnosed adhd) I just didn't have time to watch games. By the time he was old enough to be on his own more I just got out of the habit of watching football. The more I hear about brain injuries, the more I'm glad that I'm no longer interested in it. I didn't find That Mitchell and Webb Look until long after I lost interest, but this video about sums it up for me now. It's not about American football but the sentiment is the same. Like you I do check my alma mater's scores occasionally, especially when I know they were playing the big rival.
  10. Yes this. Our long haired cat didn't have this issue, but our Shetland Sheepdog did. When we took him in for grooming we always asked for a sanitary cut (they jokingly refer to it as a poop chute). You won't want to take a cat to the groomer, but a vet should be able to do it.
  11. I don't think I understand the OP either. Or I just don't have these kinds of people in my life so I don't know what they look like. The closest I can come is Farrar's description of the pseudoscience types. However, I don't think they're fake-authentic. I think they sincerely believe their woo.
  12. Ooh, I just realized Hidden Figures was a debut book in 2016. Bingo square! (Well not yet, but after I read it I can mark off that square.) I'm sorry your ds is sick Mom-ninja. That's great they gave you a return pass so he can join you when he's better. BTW, my 19 yo son is still my baby too.
  13. I finished my book club book, The Marriage of Opposites. I can't say I disliked it, but it dragged quite a bit. It could have been a much shorter book. I was also put off by the constant switch in point of view. There was first person from one character, then third person limited from another, then first person from still another. Then came a long stretch with third person omniscient, then limited, then back to first person. I don't mind reading a book that has multiple character points of view but it would have been better if it had all been done in either first or third person. I can't put any of this on Goodreads because our meeting is Tuesday and we have an unspoken agreement not to review a book before we discuss it. In the past few years (ever since I started making lists of what I want to read in a year) I made monthly goals. I even made a collection on my Kindle each month with what I hoped to read. Last year I got out of the habit and didn't get to some of the books I wanted to read. So, the other night I sat down and made my February list. Finish - The Marriage of Opposites - done Alexander Hamilton Three Men in a Boat Read - A Place Beyond Courage - my BaW Bingo prize from 2016 A Burial at Sea - the next in the Charles Lenox mystery series Hidden Figures - My Black History Month choice Whatever my book club book is for February Audio - Lab Girl This plan leaves me room for other books that I hear about and decide I can't wait to read, or if a library hold comes in (I currently have 2 on hold).
  14. I missed the audible sale but the Kindle edition is currently $2.99. I bought it the other day but it's going to be a while before I can get around to reading it.
  15. I think there was a re-release in the studios.
  16. Mardi Gras runs through the end of March. While the crowd isn't always large you might not want the kids around at night once the partying gets started. It's not quite as bad as real Mardi Gras, but there will still be lots of drunk people around. If you're there on a weekend night I would recommend leaving around 6 or 7 pm to avoid the party crowd.

  18. Wishing you a speedy recovery. I like it when I see the light after resisting something everyone else thinks is great.
  19. No, you're not alone. I was a recent college graduate when it first came out and I loved it. I only like those original three movies. There's definitely a myth aspect to them. After that it was just Lucas trying to milk the franchise.
  20. I read Between the World and Me and Americanah. I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn so long ago that I barely remember it.
