  1. Except I already read that one. :) That's been on my to-read list for a while but I keep changing my mind about whether or not I really want to read it.
  2. This looks really good. I'm not generally a fan of YA (HP and Hunger Games notwithstanding), but the premise of this book is brilliant.
  3. Thanks. For some reason the description made me think it's set on earth and it's about how earth humans react to the coming of aliens. I must have totally missed something there. Who knows? Maybe I'll read both The Sparrow and Hyperion and once again BaW will be responsible for my branching out and taking chances. :)
  4. Yep. Sesame Street has a long history of throwing in stuff for the adults.
  5. Do you mean tapeworms? Those are the only worms an animal will get from fleas, and they'll only get them if the flea itself is infected. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/tapeworm-infection-in-dogs
  6. Thanks. This sounds like something I can do. I've sent a sample to my Kindle. My library has the ebook but not the audio book. I doubt I'll want to own it, so I'll probably borrow the the ebook if I like the sample. Space isn't my favorite setting and aliens aren't my favorite characters. :)
  7. I've been trying to figure out if The Sparrow counts. I can't really tell where it's set. Since it's on my TR list anyway, I suppose I can just read it and then I'll know if it counts or not.
  8. I don't have a clue what to read for the Outer Space bingo square, so I started searching for books set in space. I found this site where you can search for books in a particular setting. Thought some of you might be interested. Books Set In
  9. Yes. And yet we dog lovers are willing to go through it over and over again because the alternative is to be without a dog. That's unimaginable!
  10. Some were taught and some weren't. Some went in waves. Some depended on the school system. When I was in 8th grade in NJ, part of math class was learning how to write checks and balance a checkbook (a very important life skill at one time). My mother told me she wished they had taught that when she was in school. She was in the same school system 25 years earlier. When I was teaching in Florida in the 80s and 90s, the only kids who learned those skills were those learning functional math for living. IOW, you kids aren't going far in life so let's at least teach you basic life skills. So, here's a skill that at one time was a big part of adulting. My mother's generation wasn't taught that skill. In the same school system 20+ years later (I even had one of her former teachers) everyone in my school was taught this as part of the regular curriculum. And 20+ years after that in a different school system the only kids taught that skill were those deemed not likely to do much beyond just working for a living (no real career options).
  11. I might be just as excited as your ds that you're finally reading these. :D Stacia's reading Harry Potter! :hurray:
  12. Same here. Poor, single working mother, started taking care of the house and my little brother when I was nine. I do love to cook but I hate housework. I'm pretty sure it's because I've been doing it for so long. Which is weird because I've been cooking for just as long and I don't hate that. Maybe it's my Italian need to feed people. :)
  13. Can I play even though we don't currently have a dog? How many dogs do you have currently? None. It's a year this month since our last dog died and we're all feeling ready for another one now. The most we had at once was three, though one of them was our grand-dog. What breed? He was a tricolor Shetland Sheepdog (that's him in my avatar). Although I feel like he spoiled me for all other breeds, we'll probably look for a mixed breed rescue dog. What brand of food do you feed them? We fed him Blue Buffalo. How much do you think you spend on your dog every year? Several hundred dollars counting food, well check ups, and vaccinations. We alternated grooming him ourselves with taking him in for professional grooming about every 3rd or 4th time. How often do you leave them to travel? Or do you travel with your dog? We've done both, but mostly traveled with him. We became very familiar with the pet friendly hotel chains on the U.S. east coast. We boarded him twice. Both times he was miserable and so were we. What do you love about having a dog? What's not to love? What do you hate about having a dog? I don't hate anything about having a dog but can't deny they're more difficult than cats (we usually had/have both). Will you always have a dog? Probably not in my senior years when it might be too difficult for me to care for one. I'll always have pets but I think when I'm old I'll stick with cats. How many dogs have you had in your life? Eight. I've spent more of my life with dogs than without. Some were family dogs I grew up with. I had three at different times when I was single. With dh I've had 3 (plus we took care of dss' dog for about a year). In over 50 years I've only spent about 8 years total (not consecutive) NOT having a dog. Why do you have a dog? Because they're dogs! Man's Best Friend. P.S. I wouldn't call myself either a dog person or a cat person. I love them both for different reasons and am always happy to share my life with either or both.
  14. Add me to that's what parent's are for and it happens naturally by living with a teen. Some kids do have issues that make it hard for the lessons to stick. Some have parents who don't bother (or think the kid will just learn on their own). I'm glad the classes exist for them, but they should only be necessary for a minority of young adults if parents are actually being parents. I thought I was alone. Most of the time I'm not bothered by new words, even if they don't seem like they should be real words. This one bugs the daylights out of me for some reason.
  15. If you like audio books and have been meaning to try a particular series, Audible has a number of first-in-the-series books on sale for $4.95 http://www.audible.com/mt/First-in-a-Series-17?page=1 ETA: Also, An Unattractive Vampire is the Daily Deal. I would never have heard of that book, let alone read it, if not for Stacia and BaW. :D http://www.audible.com/pd/Fiction/An-Unattractive-Vampire-Audiobook/B01IC3E52U/ref=a_hp_c2_dd_b?ie=UTF8&pf_rd_r=1TW9HJ3C7KY3VB6M2PRD&pf_rd_m=A2ZO8JX97D5MN9&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=5000&pf_rd_p=2901929922&pf_rd_s=center-2
  16. I made a spin-off post but no one came. :( I'll just ask here. What software do you all prefer? Paid or free?
  17. I went looking for some videos and chose this one because it's closest to what my physical therapist has given me. I do a variation of that last one - the clam shell - but you need a stretch band to do it my way. Tie the ends of the stretch band together. Lie on your back with your knees up (feet on the floor). Put the band around your legs and place it just above your knees. Slowly open, then slowly close your knees. It's basically doing the clam shell on both sides at the same time, and uses the band for resistance. I've also been given these exercises (again with some variations from my particular PT). http://www.summitmedicalgroup.com/library/adult_health/sma_trochanteric_bursitis_exercises/ I hate, hate, HATE, with a passion, side planks. But they do help.
  18. A few days ago I downloaded samples of four books, and yesterday I read all four samples. All four of them were either recommended by a BaW member or were linked (usually a list) by someone here. All four of them are now on my want to read list. They are - The Fall of the House of Dixie -non-fiction Never Caught - non-fiction A Gentleman in Moscow - fiction The Ministry of Pain: A Novel - fiction You all are bad for my ever-growing list, in the best possible way. :D
  19. In the past I've used all of the big three - Turbotax, H&R Block, and Tax Act. In looking over reviews I see that Turbotax keeps increasing its fees but is still the easiest to use. So, what do you use and why? Is there some little known program that's just as good as (or better than) the well known ones?
  20. Have you filed yet? No, but I finally finished gathering everything and plan to work on it today and tomorrow. Return or owe? We'll likely have a small return, but not enough to do anything big. We try not to let the government hold our money interest-free all year. What are your plans with your return if you got one? No plans. It won't be big enough. Florida doesn't have a state income tax but does allow you to take some deductions for sales tax. There's a standard and an itemized option - we usually do standard. In 2015 dh's company was sold then disbanded, and that involved moving retirement funds about as well as paying one out in a lump sum. Though I've done our taxes for years I was afraid I'd miss something with all that went on, so we had a CPA at the financial firm that handles his retirement do our taxes. As it turned out, I could have done what we paid him >$300 to do. This year we're going back to having me do our taxes.
  21. I get that, and it's usually bursitis in my case. It can be related to other issues or happen on its own. See a doctor if you can, as you might be able to get some short term NSAID treatment or be given exercises to help (or both depending on how bad it is). Alternatively, you can look up some exercises. Also, I agree with those who say use a pillow. A body pillow is better than one that just goes between your knees because it will align your hips and knees more accurately.
  22. It's dying because people want all of their news for free, even if that means diluted and fake news. Journalists are professionals. They expect, rightly so, to be paid a living wage for their work. In order to get paid, they need to work for organizations that can actually pay them (Huffpo btw, publishes a lot of "guest" columns written for free). If you (general you) want your news all free all the time you will get what you pay for. If you can spare a few dollars a month - Choose your favorite conservative newspaper or news magazine. Choose your favorite liberal newspaper or news magazine. Choose one you think is balanced. Choose a local newspaper. Just pick one and subscribe, even if you subscribe to the online version. Pay for real journalism. BTW, if you think that journalism, especially in the U.S., has always been professional and unbiased now might be a good time to look into its history. When this country was an infant politicians fought each other in the newspapers, some of which they owned and published themselves. The belief in unbiased, professional journalism is only a little over a century old.
  23. Five months? Unless there's major work to be done on fixing up the house, that's way more than enough time.
