  1. I joined this board when my oldest was a year and a half old. I now have four kids and the youngest is a year and a half old, and we are doing our first year of “official” homeschool thanks to the pandemic. I feel prepared-ish and like I’ll be able to muddle through with help. Thanks all!

  2. Horrible Geography is the latest winner from that series in this household. "Mom, did you know the Caspian Sea is not a sea at all but an inland lake?"

  3. "Mom, I noticed that there's some Norse mythology and Vinland stuff from reading Aesir's Kids and Leif the Lucky in the Horrible Histories: Vicious Vikings book I'm reading."

  4. Wrote up my most recent birth story, because it was a doozy: http://www.sheknows.com/parenting/articles/1130011/i-delivered-my-own-baby-in-car

What an amazing story. Love your son's drawing! Congratulations!

That was fun to read! I had my 3rd in the back seat of a Ford Taurus, so it was kind of a trip down memory lane. Your son's picture has me rolling!

Great story and very entertainingly written!

  5. Still need to clean it up, but think I found a working high-school-lab-quality microscope at Goodwill for $8.

  6. Word nerds: Oxford Dictionaries has a delightful new video channel on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/user/OxfordDictionaries/videos?view=0&flow=grid&sort=p

  7. I think the American health care system may actually be designed to kill us all early through stress and anxiety.

  8. One-day only D'Aulaires Greek Myths audiobook giveaway via Penguin Random House Audio FB: https://www.facebook.com/PenguinRandomHouseAudio

  9. Strewing success: Kid finds thrifted abacus on coffee table, identifies it from school and demands sheet of math problems to work out.

  10. Hey, it works! Reading Librarian Who Measured the Earth, and DS5 says, "Did you say Nile? That's in the Story of the World!"

  11. Good news: 5yo DS really seemed to understand Farmer Boy as a read-aloud and did a great narration for me. Bad news: He just made his own blacksnake whip. Hrm.

  12. The oversize picturebook "365 Penguins" is awesome. That is all.

  13. The Read-Aloud Revival podcast is so excellent! I keep doing chores so I can keep listening.

  14. New chicken was free-range for no more than an hour before she escaped the yard. Neighbors caught her, thankfully. Fun times for all but I think we might need to a tighter perimeter!

One of our girls goes over the fence all the time. She seems to think the grubs are better on the other side of the fence. :)

  15. Our next-door neighbor who didn't so much as wave at us the first 10 years we lived here just came over and gave us all the board games her kids have grown out of!

  16. You guys might dig this newish subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/frugallearning

  17. Has anyone ever been to Deutsch Country Days in Missouri? Good for kids?

I hadn't heard of it before you posted but now I'm planning on going if I can talk DH into it. Looks like fun!

  21. Loved Salman Khan's One World Schoolhouse book--a lot of his ideas sync with "homeschool" theory

Thanks for this mention - I've got the book on my Kindle & need to read it!

  22. Today I shirked my housekeeping work to make a Wikipedia page for the Let's Read and Find Out science books. Enjoy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let's_Read_and_Find_Out_Science#List_of_titles

  23. The kids have turned the pile of unfolded laundry into a ballpit/sandbox/play area. The baby is giggling, so I'm not going to fuss, but I'm also not rewashing that laundry!

  24. Two Hive recs (Stockmar crayons and Librivox's Blue Fairy Book) are rocking my world right now. Thanks all!

  25. The best way to find the missing thing is to order a replacement thing, right? Ergh.
