  1. Whether or not she is, ask her to find that in writing and show you. I doubt she will be able to.
  2. Has anybody contacted the Biology 101 people and asked about their Chemistry 101? I am hoping it releases in Sept. but it just says on the website that it will be released in the fall. Thought I would ask hear before contacting them.
  3. That is one of the funniest, misguided comparisons I have ever heard!
  4. I bought this last year and ended up only using the literature portion for high school. First, I wanted to do medieval, rennaisance, and reformation and it did not cover the entire subject in one year. Second, I felt that MOH was too easy for my history-loving high school boy. And, third, I wanted to add a book covering church history. DS has liked the literature portion of the program. There really is no literary analysis to speak of, though. IMHO, I think Illuminations is great for up to 8th grade but not for high school.
  5. Laura in CA, That is the post I was thinking of! I didn't know which of her blogs it was on and I tried searches to no avail. Thank you! BTW, Thank you everyone for the responses. I used everybody's feedback in my talk last night.
  6. From the blog post I remember to clearly know the class expctations and how much the teacher will be doing and how much you as the parent are expected to do.
  7. I am presenting at my homeschool meeting tonight. I am ready except for a list of things to think about when considering online classes. About a year ago I remember reading a post on SWB's blog and I thought I had it bookmarked but have looked to no avail. Anybody have a list of questions or tips?
  8. Ds finished his first year at Liberty U and I brought him home last night. He talked the whole ride home and enjoyed every minute :001_smile:. Now the summer job search begins. Last Friday he found out that he came in second out of 40 applicants for an internship. Bummer. He and his brothers have enjoyed some time together this morning but now it is time to unpack and get to the job hunt. Anyone else have a child home for the summer yet?
  9. I have not used this website but I got the link from this board. http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com/
  10. For the 1990's: Basher Five-two: The True Story of F-16 Fighter Pilot Captain Scott O'Grady by Scott O'Grady and Michael French. This story takes place in 1995 in Bosnia.
  11. DS#1 is a freshman at Liberty U, a Christian college. He is very smart and throughout his childhood had only one good friend at a time. We actually changed churches right before he went into high school because he never fit in and was excluded within the homeschool group. Right now he is enjoying his college experience but having some struggles, too. Liberty has a lot of social activities and he is getting off campus sometimes with his dormmates. He has found some guys to play D&D with and this past weekend he went to a comic book convention. BUT he has yet to secure roommates for next year. Of his two current roommates, one has a girlfriend and has been distant all year. He has gotten along with the other but when DS asked about rooming together next year, the other boy already had plans. So, he has friends that are more aquaintances than meaningful friendships. He has one good friend at home that he spends time with whenever he is home. I feel for him but he has to find his own way socially.
  12. My son is attending a Christian college but was accepted to James Madison U and Christopher Newport U. He used Apologia sciences but none of the schools asked for class or curriculum details. Another homeschooler that graduated with my son applied to state schools as a science major. He was accepted to James Madison U and offered a competitive STEM scholarship, UVA, VATech, VCU, and waitlisted to William and Mary. BTW he graduated at the age of 16. He used Apologia science throughout high school and JMU wanted curriculum info to consider him for the STEM scholarship. So my experience with VA schools is that this is a non-issue.
  13. I received the sample DVD and watched a sample lesson with my son. He is very excited to use this next year. I am thinking it will be a creative writing elective and he will still do a full credit of English also.
  14. I thought about posting this last night and this morning I see another TT question so I think this is timely. DS2 completed TT Algebra 1 & 2 and he is now taking two classes at the public school, one of which is geometry. Near the beginning of the school year he didn't like the amount of homework and asked, "Why didn't I stay with TT?" Well, first quarter he received an A. Yesterday he came bursting through the door after class exclaiming, "I got a 100 on my midterm!" Now, I am going to answer two questions that you might have. 1. Why did you choose the sequence algebra 1 & 2 and then geometry? Our school system suggests geometry between algebra 1 & 2. Years ago I read that the former sequence was better and chose to do that sequence with my dc. It worked with DS1. Next year DS2 will take algebra 3/trig. 2. Why didn't you continue with TT at home? I would have done so without any reservations. DS is very social and asked to go to ps part time. Math and foreign language were the best class choices for this schooling option. Thanks for reading and I hope this gives someone encouragement.
  15. This was many moons ago but I was told I didn't have to take 4 years of science and because I went to three high schools I ended up with only 2 years of science and still got into a competitive school as a music major. DS1 did biology in 8th, earth science at the publice school in 9th, homeschool class chemistry in 10th and that was it. He was going to take biology at the CC his senior year for dual enrollment but when we went to register all the bio classes were full except for the one night he couldn't go. Accepted at all colleges he applied to. DS2 did a homeschool class of Apologia Physical Science in 9th and is now with the same teacher taking biology. Next year he wants to take physics. He may or may not take chemistry his senior year. If a student is going into a non math/science field then 3 years of science is sufficient.
  16. Even if it is rolling admission, they usually don't start accepting the next school year of applications until August. By then they have finished processing the current year of students and have updated and released the next year's application.
  17. There are several schools in VA that offer the major but I am interested in top schools for this major. UMass looks excellent for this. That is a wonderful website for my son to review to make sure that this is what he wants to pursue.
  18. Anyone have experience researching schools for this major? My son reads sports almanacs for leisure and favors basketball and football. The sports management major seems to be a good path for him. Recommendations?
  19. JMU - excellent school, I have a music degree from there. Definitely lots of partying. I have not seen discussion of Christopher Newport University. DS was accepted there and accepted into both the honors program and President's Leadership Program. (He chose to attend Liberty.) CNU is a smaller school of just over 5000 students. It is a beautiful, newer campus. I did not know that it was a state school until we researched the school. The PL program is unique to CNU and worth looking into. I highly recommend visiting the campus to see if the smaller campus is more appealing than the large state schools.
  20. I have a few thoughts on this and experiences to share. My son went to public school freshman year and was homeschooled the rest of high school. I included his public school classes on my transcript so that his GPA could be calculated accurately on one document. If a school asked, I would have had the public school send a transcript as well. DS applied to four schools, two state and two private, and no one asked for the public school transcript. He was accepted at all four schools. A friend pulled out her DD second semester of sophomore year. The student is now a senior and dual enrolled at community college. Where I live second semester does not begin until the middle of Feb. To me, that seems like a long time to wait. Also, beginning then would be after second semester begins for online classes and community college classes. That is another reason why I would recommend pulling her out now.
  21. My son is now in the Honors program at Liberty University. His high school GPA was 3.63. If he wanted to, he could have had a 4.0. How do I know that? His overall standardized testing score since first grade was consistently in the 97-99 percentile. His SAT scores were 800, 640, 780. So why didn't he want to work to his potential? Unfortunately, I can't answer that. I sent him to public school freshman year to see if he performed the same for other teachers. He did. Instead of putting full effort into his studies he would rather talk on message boards about his favorite TV series (Avatar), or play games on the computer. Motivation to do well has to come from the teen, it is not something that you can teach him. I pray daily that something will "click" with ds and he will stay motivated throughout his first semester at college and not start slacking.
  22. He has completed Alg I & II and will be doing geometry this year. If he needs to know trig at the beginning of physics then he could do that over the summer before physics. College is on the horizon but a field or major is still unknown. I think he will do physics junior year and then chemistry if he is going into a math or science major. Ds #1 just started college. He was accepted at all the schools he applied to with only 3 science credits (no physics). He is a philosophy and religion major.
  23. DS did a Physical Science (Apologia) class his freshman year and is signed up for Biology for this year. While looking over the text and talking about different options to help him get through a module (thanks to Apologia biology post this week) he let me know that this year would be especially difficult because he is not interested in the subject. He is very interested in physics and figuring out how to manipulate or change physics. So, my question is for next year. Can he skip chemistry and do physics even though he did physical science his freshman year?
  24. I want to share here because I searched high and low for the right materials for my son's 10th grade year and then had to adapt several curricula to meet our needs. My ds loves history and learned a lot during his middle school years. Freshman year he did 20th century world history and this year I gave him the choice of either Ancients or Medieval/Ren/Ref for history and literature. He chose the latter because he did not want to get bogged down in ancient literature. Also he wants to do an in depth study of church history. So, my search began. MFW year 2 is medieval to present - no go. Biblioplan high school guide is just a reading list - no go. Truthquest was interesting but I wanted more discussion and comprehension questions - no go. I saw Illuminations at our state conference. It uses MOH, has literature guides, quizzes in MOH, DVD list, etc. Year 2 is the fall of Rome through Medieval. Hmm, I'd have to schedule some of MOH 3 on my own and add in Church History Through Plain Language. It was only $99 so I purchased the download and started planning. I know that MOH is written for middle schoolers but I thought maybe doing the upper level activities would beef it up. No go. I decided that the reading was not at son's level and the quizzes were too easy. So I look at Tapestry of Grace. I have looked at it before but year 2 covers the time period I want to cover in only two units. But wait - it uses Church History in Plain Language. Hey, I can also use Spielvogel as the spine. Government and art history can be covered as well. I decide to buy units 1 & 2 of year two and spread the work out over a year. I checked out the books from the library to decide which ones I would like to use. The discussion questions and the evaluations are at the level I was searching for. I made the two units a full year by using Spielvogel as the spine, scheduling the in-depth reading, using some of the government readings (not Utopia! Did they really assign 40 pages of deep reading in one week?), scheduling the Story of Painting, and scheduling the church history. Oh, and the geography. Yay! The in-depth study I was searching for. For literature I am using the guides that came with Illuminations. There is a good variety of readings although there is very little literary analysis. Ds has done a lot of lit analysis the past two years so I am okay with that. To round out his English credit he will be doing IEW medieval writing and a Analytical Grammar high school review workbook. I want to prepare him for writing essays every week in an AP class his junior year. Thank you for reading this. I really needed to share this process and, finally success, with someone. This board is the only place I could be understood. I started the search back in April and I a so glad everything is in place with several weeks to spare.
  25. I love this idea! We are going to an NSO rehearsal next Friday and I would like to start doing that but my library doesn't have that book. Any way that one page can be emailed to me? Last year my freshman went to at least 8 concerts and theater productions!
