  1. I am normally more of a lurker here, but you all are such a great resource and I've been having trouble coming up with solutions to this on my own. Darcy is my almost 11yodd. She has been dx'd as mildly mentally retarded. For the past 2 years we have had her in NILD's Discovery program. While I've seen some progress in the area of reading and writing, I've not seen the hoped-for advances in math. Over the last couple of weeks, I've been observing (at Darcy's Discovery program) that she's doing lots of memorizing, but not making the deeper connections that she should. I do think that memorization of math facts, for example, is a good thong and that as children grow and their brains mature the memorized facts fall into a scheme of comprehension of a complete concept. Darcy has been in her program now for almost 2 complete years and her mathematical progress is truly negligible. I'm looking into alternative methods to teach math concepts to her. She gets the concept of counting, but not simple addition to any degree other than rote memorization of some basic math facts. She is extremely drawn to music and I know there is a connection between music and mathematics. I'm wondering if any of you have studied this or taught math using music as a springboard for understanding. I also think Darcy is a very physically oriented learner and I'm trying to think of ways that I could teach lessons in math almost as if it were a PE class. I'm thinking of doing a huge number line on the floor and having her physically stand on it and move or jump to exemplify the concept of counting on. Do any of you know of any resources that would help me modify our math lessons to be integrated with music and/or PE?
  2. I copied this from their site: MONDAY, APRIL 27: WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF CHANGING SERVERS, AND THUS IT MAY BE MID-AFTERNOON OR EARLY EVENING BEFORE YOU CAN PLACE ORDERS TODAY.
  3. Unfortunately, I am unable to bre*stfeed him. Sounds like GSE is not the thing for him, so I'll try some of the other suggestions. I also combined a small amount of apple cider vinegar with water, boiled it, let it cool and then gave him a nebulizer treatment with it. I figured that couldn't hurt him and at least it would be doing *something* for him.
  4. Benjamin is just over 3 months old and has his first cold. He's all stuffy and runny. He sleeps best on his tummy, but he can't now because of all the "junk" running out when he's in that position. I found an old thread on cold remedies and someone mentioned grapefruit seed extract. Is this something I could get at someplace like Wal-Mart or CVS or even a GNC store? How would I use it for him? How would I dose him? Is there something else that might work better for him? I just don't want this congestion to end up as an ear infection and I don't really want to have to make a trip to the doctor if I can avoid it! Thanks:)
  5. Do you mean plain white vinegar? I'm assuming that you wouldn't use something like apple cider vinegar.....or does that matter? And did you add the vinegar in the detergent compartment or in the bleach or fabric softener compartment?
  6. I have to laugh at the comment I bolded because many old-timer Southerners don't consider Florida to be part of the South!! There are too many NYC snow-birds who live in FL now. When I moved to TN from VA they considered me a NORTHERNER!! Never mind that Richmond, VA was the capital of the Confederacy!!
  7. Is this still available? Did you have to purchase or was it free? Do you have a link?
  8. Wow! That's very cool!! We are proud to say that our family has been here since about the beginning of this nation too. We were able to trace our geneology back to coming over from Scotland in 1743. We've had relatives who have fought in every American war. BUT, none that have sailed their own ships here!! ;)
  9. I don't think you're crazy. I think that there are some real concerns for you, however. What does your dh think?
  10. That is super-cool!! I have a great-great-great grandfather who was present at Lee's signing the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. I believe he served directly under Robert E. Lee.
  11. I've been trying that and I feel so bad for putting vinegar in his mouth!! BUT, I've noticed a difference already and it's only been one day. How long did it take for you to cure your ds and dgs?
  12. Virginia, I just noticed the white patches in my 10 week old's mouth today. What did you use to swab with? Q-tip? Cotton balls? Baby washcloth? How did the baby deal with the taste of the vinegar? Also, my ds is formula fed, so what would you do to completely sterilize his bottles/nipples/pacifiers? I've never had a baby with thrush before, so this is totally new to me!
  13. Hi Shannon, If you purchase by the unit, you will be given access to the corresponding unit on the Loom. No worries there. I have used TOG for about 4 years now and I still pick and choose some sections and not others. This year for my Rhetoric ds, we are just using the History and Worldview sections. I'm doing something else for Literature and something else for Government. That's working well for him. For my other kids, I'm using most of the sections, but from time to time I will skip something here or there. That's the beauty of TOG. They give you SO much, but it's up to you to use what works for your family. TOG is a tool. I'd never feel guilty about only using part of it! The part we *do* use is totally worth it. And the next time around, I may use parts that we skipped this time around.
