can this child be "rescued" ? (hates reading)
RayDad replied to Lucy the Valiant's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Get him books that are below his personal reading level. You could start out with the Fly Guy books and them move up. Always find fun entertaining books and work your way back up to his personal reading level by the time he starts to be challenged again he will enjoy reading and want to read. Make sure he never feels judged by you or your children that is what is happening to him at school. Have fun -
Need a book to force my reluctant dd12 to read aloud to me.

I second The One and Only Ivan my seven year old loved it. Another great book would be The Invention of Hugo Cabret it is a fantastic book. I bet if you take her to the book store pick up the book and say this looks interesting and have/let her flip through the pages she will want you to buy it. The Princess and The Goblin is also loved by any girl. You can purchase the book or since it is a classic whose copyright is up you can even find it for print on the web. The hard bound book is a great addition to any home library. My girls love it. Have fun mom and daughter time. -
Math-U-See Primer worked well for my five year olds

What do you do when there's NOTHING to spend on Christmas?
RayDad replied to Jenny in GA's topic in The Chat Board
You could take the $25 dollars and purchase what you need to make sandwiches and hot chocolate. Then take the children and give the sandwiches out to the homeless. Even if you only give sandwiches and hot chocolate to five homeless your children will have great experience. Just a thought. -
If your son wants to do it, I think it would be advantages to let him. I do not see a need for an IQ test as you have a Math Professor who knows first hand what your son's math knowledge is. I think that if your son is enjoying learning then never stop or slow his learning. Right now you have a child who is above average and enjoying himself, sounds like great thing to me. I wish you and your son the best in whatever path you decide to take.

Illinois Home Schooling Bill Tabled -- But Fight Far From Over "Maloney, the bill's sponsor, said he will hold meetings during the first week of March to discuss his next move. If any new legislation pertaining to home schooling registration were to be introduced at a later date, it would be "under a different vehicle," he said." Quote taken from article linked below. Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/02/18/illinois-home-schooling-tabled-advocates-say-fight-far/#ixzz1EnGzbiEA Illinois homeschoolers must remain vigilant. Its is a good idea to support HSLDA. As they defend all homeschoolers regardless of religious beliefs.

Wow it only took me a moment to find this quote from Maloney. "Maloney, the bill's sponsor, said he will hold meetings during the first week of March to discuss his next move. If any new legislation pertaining to home schooling registration were to be introduced at a later date, it would be "under a different vehicle," he said." Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/02/18/illinois-home-schooling-tabled-advocates-say-fight-far/#ixzz1EnFAp1dn I hope that makes his plans clear.

I find it hard to believe that after ones freedoms are attacked by Senator Maloney that they would read a statement from him in which he clearly states that he is not done with the issue. "However, I would like to continue discussions with stakeholders as I further my efforts to ensure that certain parents do not simply use home schooling as an excuse for truancy." Remember this is what the "first' bill he introduced was supposed to do. "I look forward to working with everyone involved in the future." these are the words of a Senator preparing for the next round. He should be told to take care of Illinois failing public school system and to leave the successful homeschooling system alone. If he was not planning to continue down this road he would not be meeting with the above organizations.

Totally wrong. Every Christian I know believes that Jews "worship" the same God.
