  1. I agree, this has always confused me too. A few of the groups here claim to be all inclusive, but the don't know the definition of the words.
  2. It costs more to buy your child lunch in our local school district !!!
  3. I have only been in the store a few times, to get new teachers cards I prefer to do my shopping online, since I have two little book nuts, and one still chews on them hehehe. There is also free shipping on any order over $25.
  4. I am not in Florida, but I had a heck of a time getting my card at my local B&N in Texas. I called corporate. Their rules are your notice to homeschooling, a letter from your umbrella school or other official document, or a support group or other identification card. So I just went home, made a pretty little card. Printed it out, with our Coastal Bend Homeschoolers of South Texas at the top, laminated it. Returned and got my card !! Went to B&N online and purchased books the same day !! HTH. Jana Jana
  5. Starts Oct. 10th discounts are available online or in the store. You must have THEIR teachers card.
  6. I have always spent $1000 a year on each child. For the next 17 years that will mean $2000 a year, which is only $76 a bi-weekly paycheck. That doesn't seem like to much it me, $5.50 a day to educate two children through highschool. If I don't spend it all this year, I put it in a savings account to use for bigger ticket item later on, like science labs or microscopes, etc. This of course will include the price of outside classes they chose to take like music, art, sports, karate, etc. I think that is pretty cheap for a quality education, customized for each to each of my childrens needs.
  7. We just have a yahoo group, the key for us was to include all the names of the small towns surrounding out big town in the description. So others could find us easily. And of course including any other key words that are important to you. Our are all inclusive, secular, homeschool, field trips, support, etc.
  8. I have found like minded group in Alaska, Montana and Nevada. But all the years that I have homeschooled in South Texas, I have never found one. This year a girl friend and I created an all inclusive secular group on yahoo. We don't care where you come from, how you teach, or what religion you are. As long as you respect that others have different beliefs from you and can respect that. It has been wonderful. I have always felt isolated in my semi large town across the bridge. Little did we know that there were over 60 families just like us. We have only been around 2 months. We have a wonderful group !!! I am still in shock. We only do 2 outings a month and one parents night out. Most of us are classical and just don't have time to do more.
  9. "Every child develops at their own pace. Thanks for you opinion." then just walk away. I went through this with my older children. I just stop it short. Sooner or later they get the picture.
  10. We don't have a school room. But our next house will LOL Our stuff is in every room, it would be nice to have one room with all the bookshelves, although we would continue to homeschool anywhere and everywhere.
  11. I am loyal to Sonlight CORES only. The other subjects sometimes fit us.
  12. I am just outside of Corpus Christi. We have a few homeschool groups around here. I am co-moderator of the only secular-all inclusive group around. I am starting all over with 2 little ones. I have been homeschooling for 20 + years.
  13. We use Sonlights pre K.... it is just reading great books.
  14. I am not using them now, but going to start again in 2 years. I love them..... well most of them. We do a wtm, sonlight, bf mix.
  15. It is unmoderated, the last 25 or so messages I saw were for s*x sites or the such. It was started in 2000, and looks like it was probably all but abandoned in 2002.
  16. Gosh I just went to look........... don't bother going to the unmoderated one on yahoo. It is defunct, and scary !! ICK http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BFUsers/
  17. www.deliberatedumbingdown.com/ She is just reacting from the way she was taught ! home.comcast.net/~llefler/clavell.htm ( Not exactly the same, but an example of how easily children can be lead. I would keep mine far from her )
  18. Wow an expert ;-). So can you tell me when you would start with the foreign languages, as in what ages ? Also for the history? I have seen some references on here to using them really early, but what I saw on the site was 7 and up. Do you agree with that ?
  19. Can we buy these in the US ? If so where ????
  20. The B&N here gave me tons of trouble. I called corporate, according to them I needed letterhead or an ID card. I printed out my own ID card and took it in. The guy questioned it, I told him to call corporate hehehe. He chose not to, and I got my card. Mine doesn't have any expiration date though ????
  21. OLD ? Dick and Jane ( don't remember where I saw them ) or check out oldfashionededucation.com for other suggestions.
  22. I have one son, that just couldn't get spelling. For a long time we struggled and tried everything. For him it was a See, Say, Do that worked. He would see the word on a list, say the word, then say each letter as he wrote it ( not just with paper and pencil, he wrote it with his finger on sand paper. ) Don't ask me why maybe it is just the way we are wired. I unconsciously do this myself. When I want to write a word, I find myself writing it with my finger on what ever is handy, the desk, wall, table, etc.
  23. My step dad has worked his whole life. He had insurance for many many years on his family. As he got a bit older and the work slowed down a bit, he couldn't keep his private self employment insurance. At age 61 he had to have a triple heart bypass. My mother died in 2007 with cancer. These two things left my dad with more bills than he could ever pay. I worked very hard to get the majority of them written off. I know I paid their bills, but you did also. We all paid in higher premiums, and bigger deductions. Where do you draw the line? How much more can we continue to pay for those that don't have insurance. I know my rates went from $250 a month premium and $25 copays to the Dr. for my family of 4. To $625 a month this year ( Through a very large insurance company ), with copays of $50 each visit, and a $5000 up front deductable per person x 3 ( they won't insure my son ). What about my son that was born with a heart condition and asthma? He is now uninsurable, simply because my husbands employer sold his company. There was a lapse in coverage, and since he is high risk with a pre existing condition, no one wants to take him on? How am I supposed to afford the $ 726 a month in medications, and the $180 per pediatrician visit? My family hasn't made bad choices. No one asked for cancer, a heart condition or asthma? I dont' know if Obama's national insurance thing is the answer, but there has to be one. I can't afford to keep my children insured, and pay for everyone elses too. Not in this economy !
  24. I have to agree on the Leap Frog Letter Factory. We also have all the other DVD's and the fridge magnets. My son got the set at 2.5 and knows all his letters, upper and lower case. The sounds of all the letters. His numbers from Math Circus. He is blending words already at age 3.1 . ( Although we do some white board work now .)
