  1. I am an old (1999) WTM mom, just trying to figure out what I want to use this time around !! Can you tell me what you are using? What you love? What you dropped? Mainly I am looking for tried and true Grammar suggestions. BTW: who would one contact to have a board added ??
  2. I too have seen the face of homeschooling change over the last 20 years. Back then we had something to prove. Now I see so many families in my area doing 5-10 field trips a week. I always wonder when they have time to teach their children. I know my thoughts won't be popular with everyone. That's ok with me. Everyone has to do what is right for thier own children.
  3. I have two....... not really babies anymore. But both are asthmatics and heart patients, both have had multiple cases of RSV. We had confirmed cases of H1N1. My youngest did better. The oldest still has a cough 7 weeks later. Our ped immediately put them on prednisone, increased pulmicort, increased xopenex, tamiflu, mucinex and another cough/ expectorant. They added antibiotics too. You are in the high risk catagory, but please avoid the doctors office if possible. If you dont have it when you go in, you most likely will when you get out. Our ped suggested calling an ambulance if we felt it was really necessary. Having said that, we got H1N1 early......We got first appointment of the day the 3 times we had to go in. Went in the back door, and left by it too.
  4. Honestly we are secular homeschoolers. It was a ton of work for me to modify LC. It was one of the few latin for homeschoolers back then though. I like it, but looking for something more secular now is all.
  5. Thanks that was very helpful. I have been looking at Lively Latin, and Minimus....... both are secular from what I have heard. I used Latina Christina with my olders before Wheelock's. I just don't care to go that route again. I will do Wheelock's for sure. We will of course wait until reading fluently, I really don't want to start before 6 or 7ish. But would like to start earlier than 3rd for sure... hopefully it works out that way. These kids sometimes have minds of their own. :D Anyone else have suggestions ????
  6. Ok I am an old homeschooler, looking at all the new stuff. Geez is there a ton out there. So tell me what you loved, and when you used it? I am wanting to start latin as soon as possible with my little ones, even if that means stretching something way out, working very slowly to start. :lurk5:
  7. Party it is like another poster said, you need an excuse to be out of work, school, etc. Part is from fear I think. Mostly they are at the ER just because the doctors are overwhelmed too. Out County Health Director was on tv this week begging doctors to open their offices for longer days and on weekend. To try to stop the flow of so many in the ER.
  8. Well from my area, we have 2 that had no issues at all die. They can't figure them out. The other 4 had heart conditions, COPD, or severe obesity and all the problems that come with that.
  9. Exactly. I know I am over protective, for majority of people the swine flu is very mild. But my children are the majority !!! But my town is overwhelmed at the moment for sure. There are 62 children in ICU today, up from 60 yesterday. I have 2 friends that are nurses, they say it is nuts !!! They have never ever seen anything like it. The local Children's Hospital is seeing 268 + cases daily in the ER. That isnt' counting those that go to the other hospitals, or minor emergency or their doctors !!!
  10. My dh works in a shop, there are about 10 guys there, and occasionally other people. He is following my rules so far. Six feet from anyone, wash hands constantly. Use santizer when he gets in the car. He has masks at work just in case. He takes it very seriously. I was the one that got us all sick last time. Probably from the grocery store. I will not be allowing my family to have the vaccine either way. According to my ped it is mutating, and the vaccine will not be effective anyway. He is seeing the same children sick a second time around now.
  11. We are in TX too, Corpus Christi area. My neighbors grand daughter is in ICU, my husbands great nephew is too. A member from my HS group has a daughter with pnuemonia from it. My kids are in isolation........ till it slows down. The local hospitals are overwhelmed. They set up a separate area to triage patients !!!
  12. Quince is still coughing, it is miserable. We were only tested because it was early in the season. Both of my kids have heart conditions and asthma. My husband is a heart patient too. This also happened before they stopped testing in my area. Now they are only testing during autopsy, to confirm. The rapid tests are still being done, but they have about a 50% false pos or neg rate LOL.
  13. I would not go in for testing, if you didn't have it you will mostlikely get it in the ER or doctors office !!!! I wouldn't go in except by ambulance if necessary. But we have widespread cases in my area. My ped is also seeing some kids back in with it again, which leads him to suspect it is mutating !! We lived on mucinex, tylenol and tons of fluid. The asthma meds were increased and prednisone started.
  14. From the CDC The symptoms of 2009 H1N1 flu virus in people include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea. People may be infected with the flu, including 2009 H1N1 and have respiratory symptoms without a fever. Severe illnesses and death has occurred as a result of illness associated with this virus.
  15. We all had it, confirmed by ped as both kids are heart patients. 1st me, headache, sore throat, tired, sinus yuck. 3 days later was DH, high fever, sore throat, tired. 4 days later both kids. 1 with high fever, the other no fever, I have to assume both had sore throat as they didn't want to eat. One was exhausted, as the other bounced around like nothing was wrong. Then the sinus crud started...... UGH. Mine held on for 17 days, DH was well in 48 hours ( the jerk LOL ), the kids were sick for 13-14 days. My severely asthmatic son still has a cough 7 weeks later. We just can't get him over it.
  16. I have one too. My son is 3. I bought Sonlights P 3/4 and we went through it in just a month. I bought P 4/5 and he is doing 2-3 days at a time. So I have added all the suggestions for WTM PreK-K, and we are blazing through them. I have started collecting 1st items now. We are doing OPGTR, HOP, Sonlight P 3/4, P 4/5, with reading selections from WTM 1st, Sonlight K Science, Handle on the Arts Science for P 4/5. Kumon, Explode the code, Saxon K and EB K, MusikGarten, along with anything and everything else to try to delay him from moving on to Sonlight K- WTM 1st to fast LOL. I don't see delaying much longer than next August though at this rate. Good luck!!!! It is a challenge.

  18. Sonlight is the only "box" I could ever use. I do use it secularly. I would have to add to the LA, but could do it on the sly LOL
  19. I don't think you can, but don't quote me. Check it out online. They only allow you to use one card when you check out. Unless it changes on the 10th the answer should be no.
  20. My DH isn't laid off but he has had massive hour cuts at work. We are making less than 1/3 of what he was last year. It is super tight, but there are no other jobs around so we are thankful. I have started to use Hillbilly house wifes emergency meal plans. I am able to feed my family of 4 for about 70 a week or less. We gave up the second car. Paid off one and got rid of the full coverage insurance. We got rid of the second house phone, shut off cable, went with another electric company, canceled out cell service and got prepaid phones. Turned down the water heater, lowered the AC, connected a hose to the yard from the bathtub so we can water the garden we put in ( we use natural homemade soap and shampoo ). I make alot of my own supplies, especially laundry soap. We moved into a smaller rent house, and work for the landlord to pay part of the rent. We are doing everything we can possibly think of to stretch a dollar, and make out stockpile of food last. I have one girlfriend I can rant to. The kids have no idea, they are to young. I stay upbeat and optimistic. I have lived through much worse, and made it this far. We will make it through much worse if need be.
