  1. It sounds like you are really comfortable with your situation and that you will have a fun and productive year. :D
  2. I really wanted to begin SOTW last year while HS'ing DS who was 6 at the time. We do it together now~ he'll be 7 in December and is in 1st grade. He LOVES it, especially the CD which we listen to in the car (we read the chapters and do the projects, and the CD is used more as entertainment/reinforcement). Looking back, he definitely would not have had the attention span last year at this time. He was/is WAAAYYYYY wiggly!!
  3. I'm still trying to figure this all out myself. It's a tough call, that's for certain :tongue_smilie:!! At the moment, my DS's are not involved in any sports or music lessons due to the fact that DH is between jobs and we're in the middle of a move, so there's just no time or $$$ for extras. And I STILL can't seem to find time! DS loves to relax after school, and to spend time outside or playing with friends. So I encourage this. I feel kids need a lot of downtime and that they learn a lot through their play, and even more-so by spending time outdoors and exploring nature. After dinner, DS6 seems to really calm down, focus, and express the desire to do something educational. I've found his focus lasts just long enough to get one or two things done~ math and SOTW w/ a quick project, or reading a chapter out of his chemistry book (RS4K) and possibly a quick lab, or even something as simple as one lesson in FLL. I always try to have him read to me, but that doesn't always happen because it starts to get too late (and I'm a stickler for him getting to bed on time...... he's the kind of kid who NEEDS his sleep or he's miserable the next day). I've resigned myself to the fact that it won't all get done every night, so I'll just do bits and pieces here and there, whenever HE wants, in order to nuture his love of learning. You stated that you're finding it hard to fit it all in, including "family time". Maybe play an educational game one night, watch a science DVD together, do a fun project or experiment (an easy one, without a lot of materials or set-up/clean-up involved) and consider this 'family time'?? Play CD's in the car while traveling to your sports and music lessons~ First Language Lessons has a CD, Story of the World is a good one to pop in, or get some quality audio stories from your library. Also, you mention music lessons. In my humble opinion, that is one of the BEST learning experiences a child can have. So even if you did nothing else all week your kids are being incredibly enriched. :) ETA: My DH is incredibly smart when it comes to science, computers, and math. Unfortunately, he doesn't participate in our boys' academics nearly as much as I'd like, if at all. He's unconditionally supportive, which I appreciate beyond words, but I sometimes wish he'd show more interest in being involved. He has soooo much to offer, I just wish he had the desire to be a bigger part of their education.
  4. Thanks for letting me join the Weekly Reporters, even though I'm not HS'ing full time. :grouphug: Although I have to admit that afterschooling can feel like full-time homeschooling at times!! There's only so many hours in a day. :tongue_smilie: Here's our week: http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/
  5. I have my Wordless Wednesday posted (link in my siggy). DS 'captured' this caterpillar and has been taking care of him. It just spun its cocoon, so now we're waiting to see what emerges!! :)
  6. Tomorrow is a busy day so I'm up late preparing, including updating my blog. Here's our weekly report~ http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/ I look forward to spending the weekend reading everybody's updates!! :)
  7. :lurk5: I feel your pain. I am extremely math phobic, and when we decided to send DS6 to public school this year, one of the things I kept telling myself (to make myself feel better about sending him) was "at least someone else will be able to teach him math". Unfortunately, his school uses Everyday Math.... so now not only will I be helping him with his homework using a program I don't like, but I've also taken on supplementing his math using Singapore. It's easy enough for now, but I already have a hard time answering some of his questions! I am not being ANY help to you, sorry. What I wanted to say is that I have been wondering the same thing about TT or even Math-U-See. My DS is a very visual learner and I think he'd do well with one of these programs, but I'd love to hear others' experiences. Thanks!! :bigear:
  8. A bit of fall color not involving trees! :D http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/
  9. Thank you for your responses! Everyone has been so helpful. Thank you, forty-two, for the link to Kitchen Table Math. Some *very* interesting and relevant information for me to read up on. :)
  10. Hello! I haven't formally introduced myself~ I homeschooled my ds "D" last year for Kindergarten, but due to circumstances beyond my control, DH and I decided to send him to school this year. He's already cried to me about being bored and wanting more math and science. I am in the process of ramping-up my afterschooling curriculum to meet his needs. His school uses Everyday Math, which I know nothing about other than people on this board do NOT like it!! I will be doing more research on it today if I have the chance. In the meantime, I'm wondering what math would be a good supplement to the style in which Everyday Math is taught? Would Saxon be good to help drill in the math facts? What about Math-U-See? I have been using Singapore, but don't want two completely different learning styles as I don't want to end up confusing DS. Any suggestions? :bigear:
  11. Hello! I was homeschooling my son last year but we're now an afterschooling family due to many (MANY) changes and challenges thrown our way this year. I hope I can still be a part of your community as I am a blogger and will be continuing with my Weekly Reports. I've missed posting on this forum (I've been lurking since May) and it feels great to be back. You are all such an inspiration to me! :grouphug: The link to my blog is in my siggy.
  12. Welcome MAY!! :D My boys are having a lazy morning so I actually had time to sit down and blog. Our weekly report is up at http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/ . Have a nice weekend. I get a day of scrapbooking---away from home with no kiddos for an entire day--- so I am indeed having a nice weekend. Enjoy!
  13. We're up. Today we're trying to get stuff done but the boys have quite the attitude going and they are literally bouncing off the walls (and the furniture and each other). *sigh* http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/
  14. I have a photo to share~ sorry to all you rat lovers out there, but this creeped me out!!
  15. We had a nice week, although a bit too busy for my liking. At least the weather is FINALLY starting to get nicer!! :D http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/ Have a nice weekend!
  16. It's been a very relaxed week, and I'm ready to back into the swing of things. Man, the holidays just threw me for a loop (yes, it is almost March and I still haven't recovered)!! Next year I'll have to plan better for these winter months. http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/
  17. I also have a K'er and am blogging at: http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/ I tend to only find time once a week to blog, even though I had such good intentions of blogging daily. I'd rather read everyone else's blogs than type in my own I guess!! :001_smile:
  18. We had your average week~ school, activities, playing, snow. I'm in the midst of the winter doldrums and really need to snap out of it!! Maybe next week..... http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/
  19. I've become a reluctant blogger since our Christmas break. But I got our weekly report up for this week, hooray!! http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/
  20. We had a great week! My son didn't necessarily LIKE having to do school, but he DID IT and without complaint. :D http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/
  21. It feels good to have a solid week of school under our belts after such a long holiday break!! Welcome back, everyone :D. http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/
  22. This post is not wordless~ I'm such a rule breaker ;). I'm in the process of getting my new computer set up (yeay!!) and don't have any of my newest photos on it yet, but I'd like to participate. :) http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/
  23. I have no advice but wanted to let you know I'm in the same situation with my DS6 (just turned 6 two weeks ago). It's hard to hear him complain about school and how much he "hates" it. I feel like it's my fault for not making it fun enough for him, but in reality I know he'd complain no matter WHAT I tried to do. Anything that even remotely resembles "school" makes him throw a fit. I'm fighting an uphill battle..... with a K'er!!! :glare: Hugs to you.
  24. Here's our weekly report, although the posts following the report actually sum up our week MUCH more accurately!! :tongue_smilie: http://tinroofschoolhouse.blogspot.com/
