  1. My 7th grader will be using Hake Grammar again this year. We just don't use the writing portion of it. I review the lesson and go over the practice questions with him, then he does the review on his own. It doesn't take much of my time. I've been happy with it so far.
  2. Thank you so much for posting this. I am so glad I clicked on your link to read your review. In all the time I've spent researching kinder curriculum, I somehow never came across Memoria Press. After looking at it, it might be just what I'm looking for. So, thanks again!
  3. Thank you so much for posting! I have Horizon (0 points) and Kirkland (1 point) "organic" milks in my fridge right now. I guess I'll be making the drive to our local Sprouts store to get milk from now on.
  4. The one time my husband gave the kids beans to play with, I later looked in my younger son's room and discovered he had pulled all of his clothes out of his dresser drawers and filled the drawers with beans. After that, we only did rice on the kitchen floor on top of a big vinyl tablecloth.
  5. We have the shiny, dark wood floors. They're very pretty and really dress things up. But if I could change anything, it would be to make them not shiny. I'd rather have the more "rustic" looking wood. My floors are only 4 years old, but already show a lot of scratches and dings. And yes, they do show every little piece of fuzz and dust.
  6. We had a super easy dinner... frozen cheese tortellini with jarred spaghetti sauce and frozen garlic bread baked in the oven. It's nice to have really easy dinners every now and then that everyone will actually eat!
  7. We've had pretty good luck with jcpenney.com, but their actual stores don't have much for kids.
  8. I'm the same way. I never really feel clean after taking a bath. It just feels to me like I'm soaking in dirty water. Plus, I get bored. My husband used to suggest that I go and take a hot bath after a long day, and he never understood why that wasn't appealing to me. But I love a long, hot shower!
  9. We just started homeschooling this month, so it's still pretty new to us and our families. I will say that everyone seems a little more comfortable with it because I'm a certified teacher. I don't at all think that that makes me a better homeschooling mom, but if it makes them feel better about it, then that's fine with me. My mom has been very supportive, ever since I told her we were considering it. She was a little concerned about how I would handle it... meaning that I won't get any breaks from my kids, especially because my husband travels a lot. But she basically told me that if I felt that I needed to homeschool, then I should at least try it, or I'd always regret it. My dad and my brothers think I'm crazy, but they support us. I have one sister who thinks it's a great idea. Where she lives homeschooling is very common. I have 2 sisters who don't agree with it. One of them is still nice about it though and asks me how things are going, but with the other one (who has no kids), we never discuss it. My in-laws have no idea. My husband hasn't told them yet. We agreed that I'll tell my family, and he'll tell his. So who knows when he'll get around to telling them, and who knows what they'll have to say about it??
  10. I'm also a former elementary school teacher. I taught up until the day before my first child was born. Being a teacher and seeing how things are really done got me really thinking about homeschooling, especially as my son got closer and closer to the third grade standardized testing. I always knew that I didn't want my kids to go through that. Being a teacher also showed me how much school teaches to the "average" student. If your child is not "average," they're going to be bored because they're ahead, or always struggling because they're behind. So we finally pulled our oldest out of school in December, and started homeschooling all 3 just a few weeks ago! However, I have teacher friends who think very badly of homeschooling. Oh well. I've had to develop a thicker skin. I do have moments of panic when I realize that maybe everyone is right... that maybe I am going to screw up my kids. But I have to block those thoughts from my head. I know my kids, I've done the research, and I've prepared and prepared. I'm doing what I think is best for my family, and to heck with what everyone else thinks. They'll either get over it, or they won't. I may lose some friends, but I also hope to gain some new ones. Best of luck to you.
  11. I ordered some things from them last Tuesday, and just found the box on my front porch this evening. So it took 6 days. I hope you get your order soon!
  12. Thank you to everyone for your responses! I'm now planning to start journal writing next week, and have a pretty good idea of how we're going to do it. So thanks for all of your help!
