  1. Is this a meaty curriculum for a science loving 10 year old? We're using Real Science 4Kids and Ellen McHenry's The elements for chemistry, however more is missing...any thoughts and/or recs appreciated.
  2. I commend you for working really hard to find a community of homeschoolers for your children and family. Finding a good match is really hard. It sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that this community "might"work, however you said it yourself that your gut is telling you otherwise. Listen to your gut, it is your intuition, your voice that is telling you it is not a right fit. In fact the evidence points to that direction as well, ie. early am, 4 hour days, nobody is making any moves towards your boys, ...sounds like it could be detrimental as well, Ie. the love of learning may suffer... This experience resonates with me as well. I spent quite some time with a group of homeschoolers solely because I wanted my girls to have a community of homeschoolers...every time we got together I spent hours afterwards asking myself why I continuously, willingly put my children and myself in such an environment. None of us got anything out of these relationships...I have realized that it's okay for us not to be part of a group - the girls know kids individually from outside activities - albeit not homeschoolers but that is okay as well. I am constantly looking for opportunities with other homeschoolers, but until I find the right fit and match I have decided not to settle - that is why I chose to homeschool in the first place.
  3. I could have written this post myself. We are in the midst of trying to decide whether to put our girls in private school or continue homeschooling. We have also always homeschooled and bc of a career opportunity that rarely becomes available we are now embarking on this discussion. Can I ask what has brought you to private school vs homeschooling in the middle school years? How is your daughter handling the anxiety, is she excited about her new schooling opportunity or does she have similar concerns, esp about socialization. I believe that sharing your thoughts and feelings, together as a family, might be helpful during this transition.
  4. We get Word Girl, Word World,Leap Frog from library, my 4 year old loves them!
  5. We've registered for the IEW online class that begins in August. We chose IEW because I like that is a structured program focusing on outlining skills, story sequencing, summarizing (goes well with the skills she's learned with WWE). I also like that I can outsource part of her writing curriculum.
  6. My DD uses The American Heritage Student Dictionary by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. It is very thorough and has worked real well with my daughter since she was five.
  7. For those of you who have used this program with your child, did you really need the teacher's manual or are the textbook and activity book enough?
  8. I agree that beginning with FLL 3 will be fine because of the amount of repetition. That is one benefit of FLL you don't usually have to go in sequence with the levels because each volume begins with repetition of the previous level.
  9. Thank you, I think my kids will enjoy it. Thanks for sharing.
  10. Thank you, I think my kids will enjoy it. Thanks for sharing.
  11. I would suggest looking at Math Mammoth and having your son take the placement tests to learn about his strengths and/or challenges, http://www.mathmammoth.com/complete/placement_tests.php. We use math mammoth as a supplement to Singapore and it is a very child and parent friendly curriculum. Maria Miller has a great website with a lot if useful information, worth exploring.
  12. Thank you so much for your feedback, very helpful in helping me make a decision. Lively Latin looks like a good option for us.
  13. What are your experiences with either one of these curriculums for a 10 year old who is excited about continuing to learn Latin. DD completed Minimus Latin.
  14. The Kindle versions are such a great option, my daughter also carries her Kindle everywhere, thanks for the info.
  15. Thank you I also registered for the course. Looking forward to it!
  16. This is a great resource! You can track current sales and those on the horizon, especially for those who want to budget curriculum. I have purchased numerous items and have been very pleased.
  17. We buy the textbooks, spiral bound from LuLu and they work perfectly for us.
  18. My kids love it as well, even the 3y/o. We use it as a supplement and began with the first book Apples, even though we are working in the 4th grade level. We use it as a read aloud, 9 y/o dd does the reading. They both ask for it daily, however we usually do it 1-2 times per week. It fits nicely with our other math curriculum.
  19. Outsourcing actually helps us prioritize because it is a set time with a paid teacher. We do online courses so it helps to have some of the core subjects outsourced. I find at times that I may be too flexible with our time, depending if dd spends time with comments/questions. It's a challenging balance.
  20. We purchased a Kindle for our 9y/o and it has been the best investment. She is a voracious reader who goes through so many books in a short period of time. So access to books has been a life saver to meet her needs. There are many classic books that are free, as well as borrowing from our local public library. The educational games available are also worthwhile and very inexpensive. I want one for myself!!
  21. This has been a constant struggle for me - there is NEVER enough time!! It is so frustrating...my biggest challenge is being okay with the reality that we cannot do all the wonderful curriculum that exists. Prioritizing for us begins with balancing our daughter's interests with core subjects. Our daughter is a pianist who has increased her practice time to 3 hours daily and she is only 9 years old. Although I have helped her manager her practice she is self motivated and has told us that she wants to practice those hours as she is interested in piano competitions. I have had to re-prioritize our time with her interests, ie. piano and then our musts which I see as core subjects, ie. math, language arts (WWE, AAS, FLL, literature), science and language. I also prioritize her extracurricular so that she feels she gets time to build relationships with friends. She participates in a monthly book club and weekly tennis and music theory class all day Saturday. I also try to be flexible because my daughter has sooo many interests, we have a wonderful curriculum on insects b/c she loves them so I try to leave Friday pm open for her to go deeper on a particular subject or work on a project.
