  1. I will be checking some of these ideas out. Thanks for the imput!
  2. I have an extremely reluctant writer. I was at a homeschool conference last spring and spent considerable time speaking with Sandy Larson who wrote "Ignite your Writing" curriculums. I find her curriculum to be extremely user friendly, unintimidating and so does my daughter. It has taken a few months but now we have no more tears. I have recently started giving her writing prompts and she has enjoyed that. (ex - You woke up this morning and found yourself in your favorite cartoon (movie, etc). What happened?) I have not pushed report writing or anything else. I just am trying to get her to write. You can look up Sandy's curriculum by googling the title and you can find writing prompts on line by googling "writing prompts". There is also a book by Karen Andreola (sp?) called Story Starters that I have heard good things about. Hope this helps!
  3. We read aloud every morning for our history. I rarely have the kids do projects or papers though I have never found this to impede their learning. It is amazing what we find to talk about during and after our read alouds. They have shown amazing comprehension and insight. Never underestimate the power of the spoken word!
  4. I already tried that and it was just too, lets just say, boring/challenging for her. We have used Christians kids explore... series for several years and really enjoy it. I feel that that curriculm is just a bit to simple for her now but after the tears and frustration I faced with her using apologia I have started having her join the boys and for a while using Christian kids Explore Earth and Space and she is loving it. I have her do extra projects but I still need some ideas for next year. I am hoping to find something that is not so in depth as apologia but not too simple and basic. Thanks so much for your comment and I'm glad apologia works for you.
  5. If anyone out there is using a science curriculum that they are thrilled with for 7/8th grade I would be glad to hear if it. My DD is not science minded so I am not looking for anything that is so in depth that she starts to snore. I look forward to any imput or ideas!
  6. I would skip it and begin again next year at the next level. Your kids are young and you will eventually cover it again in the future. If you really feel the need to finish you could find some fun read alouds and do those at bed time during the summer. Have fun!
  7. If your kids are excited and you are excited then it looks great! Alisa
  8. I have used taxact for the last two years. It is listed on the irs site as a reputable online tax prep site and I have found it easy to use. It cost 16.95 to file fed and state taxes which they will charge to a credit card you provide. I received our refunds within a week of filing. If your taxes are as strait forward as you say they are just like ours so once you have all of your information together you can be finished in an hour or 2. They also store your info so it will be even quicker next year. Hope this helps! Alisa
  9. Thanks for the abbreviation list. I have been homeschooling for 7 years but am new to boards and such. I recognize many abbrev. but still cannot figure out what TOW is! Thanks, Alisa
  10. Hello! I have used truthquest for the past 2 years with my dd12, ds10 and ds7. Of course, it is all about finding out what works for your family but I can share with you what has worked for us! My oldest is not a funtional early riser and my 10 year old is not a proficient reader so I have combined both issues into a morning read aloud time. My 2 ds get up, grab breakfast and legos and my dd snuggles up in her blanket and we all meet by the fire (it is generally cold here most of the year). First we have a devotional time and then I read aloud from one of the books that I want all 3 of them to "read". My oldest is given supplimental readings that I require she present information to the rest of us but I have found that this morning reading time comes up all the time for conversation (in the car, at dinner etc). The total time for devotion and history reading is about 1 hour. Again, it works for my family, but this wouldn't work for everyone. I hope you find a system that works well for you! Alisa
  11. Hello! I have a ds7,ds10 and dd12 and they all love school house rock. I think they enjoy it not just for its own intrinsic value but because mom enjoys it so much! We have had a lot of fun watching them together and have been know to break into song when one of the concepts come up in our schooling (or any other time). Alisa
