Which famous person's death has affected you the most?
Jenstet replied to *anj*'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
Christa McAuliffe. I was 11 and living in Massachusetts. We were all watching the launch on TV in classroom because she was from New Hampshire. When it happened the teacher just shut off the TV and we all went back to work while they were out in the hallway crying. It was sad. River Phoenix was sad, Steve Irwin. -
A few questions about newbie chicken ownership
Jenstet replied to RoughCollie's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Just to give you a little downside. We started with 12 hens about 5 years ago. The last one was just eaten this past spring. Not by us. I found the hens to be a bit chatty. They can be noisy. We didn't do anything special during the winter. When they were younger we had a heat lamp but then when they were older we just made sure there wasn't much draft. I live in New Hampshire so it can get a bit cold here. We never had a problem with pests or sickness. When a chicken would die we never buried. Something would dig it up for snack. We just bagged it and brought it to the dump. The biggest problem was during the winter. Keeping their drinking water unfrozen required a heater for the pan. For me with 3 kids, little ones it was more work during the winter to get out to the coop. Maybe that was just me. Like with any "pet" the kids did not prove to be as much help as I thought. -
what's the consensus on I Am Legend?
Jenstet replied to Mom2legomaniacs's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I didn't like it at all. I LOVE zombie movies but I thought this was a bit boring. My fave zombie movie. 28 Days Later. Scary!! I didn't care for the one they made after. I think it was 28 weeks later or something. -
new pet owners - not going so well
Jenstet replied to gratefulmother's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I guess you have two choices. Lie or tell the truth. You could go with the whole allergy thing. They still could blame the "allergic" parent though. You could personify the dog and tell them he is felt he is needed by another family but they could still visit. There is no good way to go about it but I would do it sooner rather than later. -
Can anyone explain Lost? (SPOILERS. . .I hope!)
Jenstet replied to Pegasus's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I loved how at the end they showed that there was one person from each group that gets off the island. We know there has to be some more switching up. I think they lie because Ben may have told them they will never have a chance of visiting again if they tell. They also may want to protect the people who WANT to stay. Also most of them have been killing people on the island. Who wants to explain all of that to the outside world. They also have to account for the plane being in the ocean. It may have something to do with the settlement. Money for the lie. I am kind of feeling that Jin may be dead..really. They wouldn't separate on purpose. Desmond would make the choice to get off too. I think the ship must blow. -
Mu understanding is that your start at book 1. My 10 year old started there this past school year. It has been great!

Lost question - possible spoilers included
Jenstet replied to Elisabeth in IL's topic in General Education Discussion Board
You have to give me your thoughts on the Claire thing. That was Jack's dad right? So are they dead or are they in on this whole thing? -
We get ASK. What the kids really like is national geographic kids and regular national geographic.

My mom had this problem and her gyn. suggested she go to physical therapy. Let me tell you the sessions are not for the shy. Basically they put weights up in you and increase the weights as the sessions go on. They also do some kind of electrical stimulation, not painful. My mom gave up after 4 or 5 sessions. She said she would rather have her bladder fall out and have them stitch it to her insides. By the way I have heard from a few people that your bladder can start coming out. I don't really know if that is true. She ended up losing weight and said that it helped.

Just last month I left my husband watching my 2 youngest. 5 and 2. I brought my 10dd to karate class and she happened to forget her weapon. I drove home to get it and pulled into the driveway to find both boys in the driveway in the rain playing. My husband had passed out on the couch after a long week at work. Never heard them exit the door right by his head. I would have been gone 2 hours. Scared me to death. Him too....

I'm looking for a pre-k open and go curriculum
Jenstet replied to bethben's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
How about Sing, Spell, Read Write pre-K or K? Just tossing another option out. -
The only way buying the primer now would save you money is that you wouldn't need to buy the teacher manual/DVD again. You would have to buy the workbook though. I don't think you would need to buy a teachers manual for the primer anyway if you were trying to keep a budget. I just purchased the primer for my son. He is 5 and will be 6 in March 09. From what I gather the primer does not require mastery. It is basically a gentle intro to math, no tests. I don't think you would be missing any skills by skipping primer. It just depends on how much time you want to spend on number recognition, place value and single digit addition. I went back and forth on which to start him on but after receiving the books I am glad I am going with the primer for him. He is just a laid back kind of pokey kid. Takes his time. He could use the extra practice. We have both the sets of blocks (and the nifty boxes they go in) I have yet to use the larger pieces (100's). I heard somewhere that you need both boxes if you are going to build the clock thing in the primer and alpha books. My older started in Gamma and is now in Delta and we have used the extra pieces some but she has moved away from the block manipulatives now. You could most likely get away without the extra set for now.

I have spoken about this a little before. I have a niece who has lived with me since age 5. Her mother, my sister, has been in and out of prison for that time. She is now 10 years old. She has stolen, destroyed, and is basically a pretty sneaky kid. I am in the thick of this now so take it with a grain of salt. These kids are hard wired from a young age. Chaos is what they know and talking to them is not going to help. I understand your need to model a good environment. It doesn't really work that way IMO. This kid needs professional help. I would be more concerned about the influence and behavior modeling this kid would have on your child.

Anyone have a dog that is allergic to
Jenstet replied to Gamom3's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We moved from Wyoming back to NH but took our Wyoming dog with us. Within 3 weeks his feet were double the sized and he was chewing them raw. We did the full workup $$$ and he is allergic to 3 different types of grasses. We started the shots which were just as expensive as the testing and started a routine. It never worked. We gave up and poured a large concrete pad out back so he could spend time outside without touching the grass. He can go out in the summer maybe once a week but we have to be careful. -
We have guardianship of my niece. I don't really love her name but it is the name her mother gave her. Her name legally has 6 names in it and one hyphen. We have had issues with social security and court documents because we drop the end of her hyphenated last name and use only one of her middle names. You just have to be careful with the paperwork. Dr. offices and school stuff doesn't matter. I am going to give you my opinion so take it or leave it. Your family, your choices. I don't know your situation and where the biological parents are but I can tell you from experience that we are in a situation where we thought my niece would never go back to her mother. It has been 5 years and her mother has gotten her life back together. We are working together to get her back with her mother. What I am trying to say is that guardianship is not permanent and unless the child were adopted I would think hard about completely changing the child's name. A nickname is different but it sounds like you want to change it to something very different.

Does anyone have children going Maying today?
Jenstet replied to Natalieclare's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My neighbor came over this afternoon and "Mayed" me with her granddaughters. Beautiful little basket with fresh daisies. She was commenting on how this was their first time and they didn't know anything about it. I had to confess I had no idea what she was talking about. I think next year I will have to do something with my kids. -
We have one in every bedroom. Basically everyroom in the house except the kitchen. They are also all wired together somehow so that if one goes off the whole house starts beeping. I would like to start doing fire drills in the middle of the night. I watched a show where kids heard the alarms but didn't really know what they were and just went back to sleep. I can see the therapy bills when they get older.

This boy thing might make me crazy!
Jenstet replied to TXMomof4's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have a 2 1/2 year old and we had the same problem. I know this may be TMI but when I changed his diaper I would tell him now was the time he could "say hi" to IT. I let him have his time, then he would have to say "goodbye" to IT and he could visit IT again next diaper change. This actually did work, he stopped doing it all the time and only would visit at diaper changes. I have totally outed myself as a wacko. I know. -
I believe the "husband" and wife wrote a book. Explains why they are so public about it. $$$

More FLDS....How do you feel about this?
Jenstet replied to Jenstet's topic in General Education Discussion Board
In the article that Claire linked to it says that people in that community have been know to marry their own nieces and aunts. That close in breeding is what triggers the deficiency. It is just so strange to me. I guess they need to bring a bit of flavor into their community from the outside. -
So basically, through generations of inbreeding, a large percentage of children have developed a deficiency that causes severe retardation. The state is paying for the medical care for these kids. The state has also asked them to stop the inbreeding because of the kids and the burden on the state. They say it is God's will. Just another reason why the state has stepped in although it seems there are many more documented cases in Arizona. I don't think they know for sure the real numbers in Texas because they have been so private. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89979940&ft=1&f=1001

Tattoo Poll
Jenstet replied to dragons in the flower bed's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I had my first when I was 15. My mom signed for it. Yes, I had one of THOSE moms. The second when I was 18. I have them both on my hip. On the bone, I guess. You can't see it when I have a bathingsuit on. While I had kids a stretchmark went through them. It doesn't bother me because I don't really look down there. Sometimes my kids will ask when I get out of a the shower and I am reminded it is there. My mom had one done when she turned 50. She has it on her back and you can always see it when she bends down. Again, one of THOSE moms. My husband would rather chew nails than get a tattoo. He thinks they are silly. -
We have an Intex pool as well. 18' across. $300. We look at it as a beginner. We wanted to see how much time and effort to take care of it. I would really like to make the jump and go for a permanent inground with a nice patio/deck. We looked at gunite pools. No liner. They started around 30K in our area. So 5K for an above ground would be a good fit for us. I spend about 10 minutes a day skimming and checking chemicals. I spend about 1 hour on a weekend vacuuming.
