  1. RSO has a Chemistry level. http://www.pandiapress.com/chemistry_level1.html
  2. I didn't think you were dissing it:) I look at expanded notation or using the blocks as helpful in explaining the whys. Then we move on to the standard algorithms. I found with our PS they never moved on from the whys. Exactly your point. It was a disaster. I have to add that I did take her out after 3rd so maybe she missed some crucial step but I doubt it. Someone posted this video awhile back and it stuck with me. We do this sort of calculating with MUS and the blocks (as you know) but like you said we move on. To require a kid to do this over and over for every problem is just lunacy. This is TERC not EM but all the same kind of CRAZY!!..as far as I'm concerned.
  3. My niece, who lived with us for 5 years, used EM in PS. By 3rd grade she was struggling. They offered a parents course every year so that the parents would know how to help with the homework. It was very strange. I do think it depends on how the school teaches is but our system required that the kids used lattice and would not be introducing them to traditional algorithms. She never became proficient at it so I taught her the traditional algorithm. Her answers were maked wrong everytime she used standard algorithms. They didn't allow it. I also remember one time when she came home with a 60% on her math test. I was upset and called to teacher to see what we could do to get her back on track. The teacher told me she received one of the highest grades in class. That 60% was great and not to worry about it. We pulled her out soon after that. We use MUS now and I don't understand how the lattice method is anything like using MUS as a poster sugested. MUS does use expanded notation to show place value but moves on to traditional algorithms.
  4. Thats a good question. I haven't purchased it yet but I have been trying to decide which book to get for K next year. I know they have an expanded e-book as well. I'll have to look into this more.
  5. You can also purchase the Evan-Moore book directly from EM. They sell an e-book version for $14.99. That way you can use the book for multiple kids if you like.
  6. we are loving stack the countries math ninja abc pocketphonics, they have letter tracing for my younger and cursive for older dora rhyming
  7. I guess I'm odd. I don't work out in the AM. I need that time to ready for school and get the kids fed. I can't workout without waking up the house. I do it after schoolwork is done. Usually after lunch between 1-2. I can sneak in some weights in the evening as the kids are winding down. If the school day runs long I can do it later in the evening around 8PM.
  8. I also read that they have all moved to Las Vegas and each wife has their own house now. I think it got a little too hot for them with the investigation and all.
  9. I purchased my board at Walmart for $15.
  10. We are in lesson 20 of Beta and I have been having my son do a quick 20 problem worksheet of math facts everyday while I correct his work. We actually do one table M-th and a review sheet on Friday. This has helped tremendously. I should also add that during the summer we take a 8-10 week break from MUS and do the appropriate Math Mammoth just to kind of solidify and present things a little differently. It keeps things from getting stale.
  11. I read somewhere (Chatterbee?) Merry was thinking LATE February. Trying to be patient.....
  12. He makes the money He teaches the kids the important skills that I am finding less and less husbands have nowadays. Changing oil, cutting trees and then splitting and stacking, dump etiquette:), woodworking, where and what all the tools are, how to mix fuel fuel for the different things in the barn, mowing the lawn, running the tractor. My seven year old is more capable of running the man side of the house than I am. He knows more about how dad does things and where things are kept. Nothing to do with academics ...yet. I'm only on 2nd grade level math. He is the math guy in the house so I'm sure at some point he with be the go to guy.
  13. There was a clip of this show during something I was watching on E!. Anyway, they had a mom bring her daughter to get her eyebrows waxed. It was the most horrible thing to watch. She was SCREAMING! Apparently the 5 year old had a uni-brow. That was a bit over the top for me. I have never even had my own brows waxed.
  14. www.visualizeworldgeography.com This is for mental mapping. Not for anything cultural but for my son an effective way to learn countries.
  15. I use both. I started with AAS and although I liked it I felt it wasn't quite what I needed. I found PR and we LOVE it. We are using AAS3 and PR1. I like the ease of AAS. I love how the dictation has progressed. I like its predictability in format. I like the 4 sounds of "o", PR teaches 3. We also enjoy the readers. I do take my time with AAS. He writes every word and sentence so it can take us 6-8 days to do a lesson. This is fine with me as I feel he gets a lot more out of small lessons over time. I like how PR mixes up the word families. At times it is easy for my son to spell a word based on the same word family like in AAS but PR really keeps him thinking. I love how the rules are presented. My son enjoys the readers and was a "guesser". His reading has improved greatly. I thought the marking would be overwhelming but it really has worked for him. There isn't really anything I really dislike about either program. I feel like they are working for him in different ways. The only thing I can say is I sometimes don't really feeling like watching the DVD's of PR but it's a small thing. I may not be able to keep up with using both as we progress in PR, that remains to be seen but so far so good.
  16. We love this http://www.visualizeworldgeography.com/
  17. I would consider our school a McDojo. I don't know that I've actually looked at it in full like that but I believe around $5400 per kid. We pay $150 per month for one kid and $125 a month for the younger. It's a 36 month program. My son takes 4-5 classes a week and my younger takes 2-3 per week. We are commited but we are by far not one of the hardcore families that are working toward championships. We have other interests and adjust our tae kwon do schedule throughout the year to accommodate and make time for those other areas of interest. Our testings vary by belt rank. $45-65 for testing every other month usually. It's the weapons, sparring equipment and special skills seminars that kill me. We don't do tournaments which run about $100 per kid for entry fees for the day. That doesn't include travel and food. I know a lot of parents get their kids private lessons which also run $100 per hour. We aren't that into the the competitive end of it all. We do take advantage of the summer camp that runs at his level for one week during the summer. I do know that our school gives you the 3rd kid free. Monthly fee, not testing or equiment. A lot of parents take classes too because of this. Our school also will put your membership on hold for up to 3 months because some kids take summer off or other sports seasons. I like knowing that the flexibility is there if we need it. I hope you find a place that fits your lifestyle and budget. They really are a dime a dozen so shop around!
  18. The best time for me is after LA and Math, right before lunch. The kids are ready for a school break so I make them lunch and they plunk themselves down in front of the TV upstairs for an hour. I usually do a video and then a couple of times a week run on the treadmill.
  19. I am not anywhere close to 8th grade so this may not be suitable but I am using this with my second grader. http://www.visualizeworldgeography.com/ He is doing really well with it and takes us about 5-10 minutes a day or so. It is basically only for labeling blank maps, it doesn't include any culture, land features or bodies of water. I purchased the book only. It was $35. I am learning the countries right along with him:)
  20. We used to get this http://www.cobblestonepub.com/index.html I like it because there are no advertisements. We do get TIME for kids. www.timeforkids.com
  21. My niece, when she lived with us, had ome major issues. One of them was being unable to fall asleep. We had her on melatonin and I think it helped get her to sleep but it didn't help the problem of getting up during the night. She would get up and go get something to eat, watch TV, play games in her room and then be a bear the next day affecting the rest of the family. Sometimes she would sneak into our room and fall asleep at the foot of the bed. She was very quiet and we were sometimes unaware of what she was doing at night. here is what we did. We bought one of those driveway alarms that lets you know when someone has driven up your driveway and attached it in her doorway. Basically a motion detector. The base was in our room so when the buzzer went off we knew to get up and walk her back to her room. Things got much better after that. There were times when she would have a few weeks of sleeplessness and we would have to walk her back more than usual but all together we felt better knowing she wasn't waking the other kids or getting a pay off such as watching TV.
  22. My son is 7 and has been using deoderant for the past year. He sweats quite a bit and gets overheated pretty easily but he is also busy everyday with soccer or karate. He's a stinky boy:)
