  1. Yes! to what the posters were saying. I think separation tension is normal--I can honestly say that I wanted to be in college even before I set my applications in! If you think about it, your child has been prepping for college for quite awhile and by summer it's normal to be rarin' to go. Having friction is part of the process of preparing to depart; it makes the process of adjustment to the new digs easier, although I know it's hard on the parent especially. Really, if a child is demonstrably responsible with time and money and seeks out a good support network, he or she (she in this case) is on the way to doing very well in college. The more she can practice doing that on her own, the better. Time, money, and support are things people need to do well throughout their lives. Now that I'm a young adult, I'm so grateful that my parents gave me financial and time freedom, especially, while in college. Like your daughter, I was very responsible with my time and money, so they let me do my thing. When I came into unexpected snags, they were there, but they still let me keep on my own two feet. I appreciated that. Best wishes for you and your daughter! I was one of tandem "first ones out" too. Best, DD 23 Bryn Mawr '11
  2. Also, is it all right if I post here? I had my mother's permission to do so. (Currently I'm at home for the summer before heading off to gs).
  3. I am a homeschool grad who graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 2011. I'm preparing to go on to grad school in the fall to pursue a vocation as a theology or philosophy professor. What was helpful for me: 1) Good college guides. Try ISI (Choosing the Right College), which is about sound academics from a classical (also conservative) perspective. Other good guides: Colleges That Change Lives and Cool Colleges. 2) With respect to academics: do your homework. Find classes that speak to you (student), professors you'd like to study with, a curriculum structure that makes sense. You can (and I did) reference these in your admissions essays. 3) Suggest alternatives if you want to bring something to your child's attention, but ultimately, listen to your child. They will not be happy if it is a school that was your choice, not theirs, and if they are not happy, their experience will suffer academically and in other areas. 4) Do not be afraid! Jesus speaks this injunction throughout the Gospels. You both have come so far, and you can make it up to the next stage of life . . . even if you both feel like weary hobbits trundling up toward Mount Doom at times. (One little secret: Often, even with the most eclectic colleges, once you are deciding between two equal options, you can't go wrong. So relax!)

  7. We live inland from Portland, near Sebago Lake, in Raymond (next to North Windham). I work in Portland and it takes 45 - 55 minutes to travel, depending on time of day. We love the lake region, and the white mountains are less than 60 minutes from us, as is the ocean. We enjoy being near Portland for cultural opportunities. If you are interested in living on the coast, I agree that the Camden area is gorgeous and has an excellent library. Brunswick/Freeport also has an active homeshooling community and has the advantage of Bowdoin college and a great library. It is very easy to homeschool here, and our community and school system if very homeschool friendly and supportive. In terms of absolute numbers of homeschoolers, I am sure you will face an adjustment coming from S Carolina. I am happy to answer any other questions. debra.sepulveda@gmail.com
