If Kentucky is University of Kentucky, there are massive amounts of support for the calculus sequence. Free math tutoring center open 9am-5pm every day staffed by TA's and undergrads who have completed the calculus sequence with mostly A's, an engineering tutoring center open afternoons and evenings, recitation run by TA's twice a week in addition to lecture 3x a week, and TA's and professors have plenty of office hours and also willing to make appointments. I'm sure other universities also have plenty of support like that as well. (If it is UKY and she ends up going there, pm me and I'll tell y'all which math professors are the best. :p)

So... how much weight to give ratemyprof reviews?
obsidian replied to Hilltopmom's topic in The College Board
IME it depends on what the bad reviews say. Sometimes people leave good reviews for easy classes and bad reviews for hard classes regardless of the actual quality of the professor. Things in reviews that are red flags for me would be along the lines of unhelpful/rude during office hours, confusing in lecture AND doesn't follow the book, etc. Also professors that teach mostly lower level classes tend to have bad reviews. I had a professor last semester with almost universally bad reviews - all in Calc 1/Calc 2. I took a 400 level math class with him and he's amazing. Organized lectures, helpful during office hours, etc. In contrast, my absolute worst professor had really good reviews because he allowed computer use on exams (exams were supposed to be closed note, but you can guess what happened). -
Why can't I vote for all of them?! They're all cute but I picked the sleeping one. :001_wub:

Comp Sci had quite a lot of prep scheduled into the class. -
I'm looking for a fairly cheap way to maintain foreign language skills over the summer. I know I've seen a couple websites posted with numerous languages offered, but I can't seem to find any of them. Anyone have recommendations? I'm looking for Arabic (MSA specifically).

University of Kentucky ... the good, the bad, the ugly??

It looks like you already decided on a different courseload but AP Macro was about an hour a day most weeks and sometimes less. I really enjoyed the games as well. (The one thing about PAH that I actually liked is that you'll always find people taking more AP's/DE classes than you are and it makes you feel better about your own workload. :p)

If I have one complaint about my class...

I love Paul's Online Math Notes. It goes up to Calc III, too. -
Colleges that Change Lives - reviews, experiences

The dining hall at my university is horrible. They usually have one type of cooked vegetable, and sometimes said vegetable is canned and just warmed up. I'm a vegetarian and they only have one vegan dish at dinner (none at lunch or breakfast) and they rotate between 5 or so different recipes, only 2 of which taste halfway decent. There's pizza and white pasta, but both are flavorless. There is a salad bar that's ok, so that's something, although sometimes they run out of lettuce (!!). Half the time I opt for making myself pb&j because it tastes better than the dining hall. :glare: Maybe some people who complain about the food are just really picky, but I think there's also a lot of legitimately bad dining hall food. -
What are the most expensive and cheapest sports and activities?
obsidian replied to mommyoffive's topic in The Chat Board
Upper level anything involving horses = $$$$ I saw an estimate that campaigning an upper level hunter costs about 100k a year. A jumper or dressage horse would probably be a similar price. An eventer may be a bit less due to generally going to less competitions & not requiring so much stabling. Granted, most people aren't really campaigning upper level horses but even lower level stuff is not cheap, especially if you don't own land. -
Need help--racism rears its ugly head re African-American crimes

https://www.aclu.org/report/report-war-marijuana-black-and-white This is fairly specific, but talks about how whites and African Americans use marijuana at roughly the same rate, but African Americans are nearly 4x as likely to be arrested for possession. -

Gap year & scholarships
obsidian replied to Homeschoolmom3's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Private universities were extremely accommodating of my gap year. I sent one email to each of them after being admitted, and they all immediately emailed back and agreed to defer my scholarships. The one public university was rather difficult to deal with, but I did succeed in deferring my NMSF scholarship for a year. I suspect I only managed that by being persistent to the point of annoying...it sounded like admissions people even had a special meeting to make a decision about it. Originally, they told me they only allowed gap years for medical or military reasons. FWIW, National Merit did not at all care about deferring. It was a matter of routine for them. -
Does he mind it? I was on an FLL team. I did the vast majority of the coding and the project; I answered the majority of judge's questions. Other teammates did help, though, and there was one team member who did the majority of building the robot and attachments. Also, other team members were great at coming together when judged, especially for core values. I loved that team, and we were extremely successful -- Champion's Award at our regional and district competitions, placed at our state competition and competed at the national championship. There's, imo, a huge, huge difference between producing more output but working with people who are doing their share vs doing the vast majority of the work because the other teammates are fairly useless. For an example of the second, after I aged out of FLL, I was on an FTC team. Bad, bad experience. I did all the coding and engineering notebook stuff, while the rest of them only built the robot. They didn't even do a good job building the robot; they never gave me enough time to code, and never helped with the notebook (the notebook is a huge, huge project [250+ pages]). Coach never backed me up on anything, AND the other kids would complain if code didn't work, even though they didn't give me the time to work on it that I said I needed. They also were extremely disappointed when the engineering notebook that I did all by myself only got second at state. I did put in more time than the other kids, but not significantly so; it was mostly that I produced more output. Main things that made a difference between the two experiences -- either coach backup or the kids listening to what I said was needed (and not just doing what I said, but working with me to make sure everyone got what they needed), the other kids honestly putting in their best effort, and having someone who did a good job in the area I wasn't great at (building the robot).

Simple inexpensive item that I can't find in any store

I usually see them in gas stations that are right off the highway. -
My advisor was completely useless. She told me to take Calc IV instead of Number Theory, despite the fact that Number Theory is a prereq for nearly every higher level math course, and Calc IV is not. And she didn't want me to take a class that one of the math professors advised I take because I wasn't taking it in the right order (I had all the prereqs for it done). I'm sure some advisors are good, but mine is not, and I learned more from looking at prereqs for classes I want to take next semester, looking at how often the class is offered, and looking at my major req sheet.

Ree-sees, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to pronounce it like that anymore after seeing the rhyme... -
Ok, I did get Horned Serpent as my Ilvermorny House, though, and I feel like at least that's accurate.
