The alarmism that is politically correct. I just heard a promo for a serious radio show that we are running out of sand, on a national or international level...

Ok, I'm not sure if this is the radio show you're talking about, but Planet Money has an episode about an entire beach of sand that was stolen. It's actually really interesting and they go into a decent amount of depth about the problem in the episode. The problem isn't so much a sand crisis, per say, because a lot of the places the sand is going aren't critical in any sort of way (beach resorts replacing sand so that the resort looks pristine, for example). Some of it is more important because silicone for computer chips and concrete for construction both require a certain type of sand, and the sand in deserts is generally too fine.

Oh, well, so much for hopes for making a reasonable connection with #4. My daughter just contacted #4 asking if she would like to split the rent of a microfridge and got the reply that the other girl has a fridge already, but doesn't plan to share because "it might cause problems" so my daughter should get her own.<Sigh> Going to be interesting to have two fridges in that little room. Doesn't augur well for a particularly pleasant start to a relationship and I doubt there'll be much ride sharing. Is it bad to wish now they would do one more switch? I've reminded my daughter that there is still the room change option at two weeks if things are really wretched.

You might want to check to see if they're even allowed to have two fridges. My college won't allow that unless it's medically necessary due to allergies or something like that.

The only place we were at that was zero drama had no lesson kids, no show horses, mostly rescues and trail horses and the owners had no idea what they were doing with feed, thus our horse lost 25 lbs in about a month there and the trainer only works with green horses...so unfortunately the one mecca of love and happiness just didn't work out for us ?

The low drama places I've been have all been fairly active show barns, so, who knows. Eventing does seem on average less drama, but a lot of it is luck too.

Interesting ... my kid's horse teacher just told me today that my sister is not allowed to come within 45 feet of her ever again.  Because she told my daughter she looked a bit glum at last Saturday's horse show.  I never know whether this lady is serious about such statements.  Once she told me that nobody in her barn is ever allowed to talk about another riding stable.  When she says things like this, I generally chuckle because they sound too extreme to be intended seriously.  But maybe I'm wrong ....

I don't know your trainer, obviously, but it wouldn't actually surprise me if they were serious statements. There's a lot of crazy out there.

Now, there is a very fancy Jumping Barn on the same property and there is a Working Student there who is very advanced.  ...I thought about asking Camp Trainer if I could ask Working Student to school our horse for a month but not sure that would work out....

Obviously this is dependent on the culture of that barn, but you should probably ask whoever the working student is working for first. Otherwise, Camp Trainer may be seen as trying to poach the working student.

  6. I'm going to go with not ok but also in the realm of normal. Horse people are crazy. It's not really abnormal for working students/assistants to be treated like sh*t, either. I've personally overall had really good experiences, but only as a result of a lot of luck and being very careful about investigating barns before riding/working there. I think the craziness is a combination of things, really, but mostly it's money. Horses are expensive and clients can be unreasonable and being a trainer pays horribly - with that combination, I think crazy people last longer, lol.

If you're thinking about changing trainers, I'd really recommend investigating any barn within reasonable commuting distance. It can give you an idea of exactly what you do want and you might find trainers you didn't know about before. I don't think the horse sounds that bad. If you want to go to Camp Trainer and she doesn't have time for full training, maybe you could try half training or see if there's an advanced student who could flat the horse for you a few times a week? I know I'm generally happy to pick up a couple extra rides a week, provided the horse isn't truly horrible (along the lines of bucking with serious intent or rearing and nearly flipping) and I'm pretty competent.

If people board their horse at/near college, what do they do on breaks? This is something I’ve been trying to figure out. And then when Summer comes, seems it could be hard to find a short term boarding situation near home that has an opening right when you need it. Although if the horse lives on your own property, that wouldn’t be an issue. I don’t think we can risk losing our current boarding arrangement here, so I think  horse has to stay home and be ridden on weekends and breaks.

A lot of people just stay where their horses are, if they have them at school, honestly. Either that or they live close enough to easily go back and forth between school and home. This partly depends on your board situation too - full board or not, etc. Also, where I am, getting short term board for the summer wouldn't be much of an issue.

WHy would students buy five figure horses for IHSA when you can't even ride your own horse for shows?  Somehow I got the impression that some money was involved (show clothes and semester fees) but not much more than we are already spending and even less than it would have been, if she were going to breed shows (which she doesn't like).....would you say that IHSA is like that in general?  If it is then she won't even bother.  The ONLY reason she's even looking at IHSA is to make friends and find horsey people.  She does not like competing and doesn't like the limelight or the spotlight (or having to make her horse or any other horse ride when it's 110 degrees just because it's show day, and doesn't really appreciate what people do to show horses either.) But she thought that IHSA sort of avoided many of those trappings. Also as to your question, at this point more western than English.  But could brush up on English-not enough to compete at high levels though- I do have a feeling her and her trainer are going to train her western pleasure horse for HUS as well as low level jumping becuase they both will need a change soon. ? But I doubt his conformation would allow him to jump more than 3 feet.

Not IHSA! This was a separate club. My school is in horse country - we have a polo club, an eventing club, an IHSA team (western and English), an IDA team, a rodeo team, a horse racing club, and a saddle seat team. I haven't done IHSA because it's quite pricy at my school, due to fees and lesson prices. I can't speak directly to that. Anyway, I have found more luck with looking directly at barns, but ymmv of course.

that's probably the best. Is it actually a real word? And what's the difference between swoosh and whoosh? To me, whoosh sounds more airy and swoosh more watery, but can the native speakers help me out here?

Swoosh is a word. It's more recognizable in pop culture referring to the Nike swoosh, obviously, but I think its actual definition fits what you're looking for?

  10. Here's a list of IHSA teams, if that helps. Y'all are Zone 8, regions 1& 2 - all the way at the bottom of the page. Does she ride hunter/jumper or another discipline? Honestly, just about any college is going to have people that ride. What I found more useful was to look at barns and trainers in the immediate area around the school to find a good fit in that respect and then I met people at the farm. My school does have a club focused on the discipline I ride in, but it wasn't a good fit. There was a lot of money, a lot of buying high five figure 'made' horses, and a lot of people paying full board at the high end boarding barns. I ride on much more of a shoestring budget than that, lol.

  11. Quant is weird and it's more tricky word problems than actual content. It was all Algebra I and Geometry + some data analysis / graph reading type stuff. Definitely no trig and no Algebra II that I noticed. Did he use the free practice tests offered by ETS? Those were accurate within 2pts of each section for me.

DS will be getting up at 6:30 AM, five days/week and occasionally on weekends, to catch a 7:15 bus to get to an 8:00 practice. I've already bought him an alarm clock called the Sonic Bomb, but he's even slept through that a few times. I'm guessing the reason they insist that all freshmen on the team must room with a teammate, is the hope that at least one of the two will wake up and make sure the other one gets up as well. I suspect it's going to be quite a painful transition!

I usually have multiple alarms. He might look at the Alarmy app for his phone too. It's one of the few things that nearly always wakes me up, lol.

I don't know these either.  What are they?

ftw = for the win, tfw = that feeling when

I always read imho as 'in my honest opinion'. imnsho always throws me for a loop for a second because I think it's 'in my not so honest opinion' until I remember some people use the 'h' as 'humble'

  14. Wow, this is so helpful!  I knew about the aerial studio there because we were looking at Transylvania University.  Thank you!  This is great information!

ETA:  Are you from KY?  Just wondering about the dual enrollment courses if they transferred easier from in-state rather than out of state.

I'm not from KY. :) I'd be happy to answer more specific questions via PM, if you'd like.

  15. University of Kentucky has a full ride for National Merit. Looks like an aerial studio too though I don't know how good it is. I'm studying math and I have not-quite a double major in computer science. I love the math department; all my professors have been great. They also took every single dual enrollment course I had and almost every AP (it's really hard to get out of freshman comp; my AP English classes only counted for general English credits, which was useless).

  16. Has she taken any "theoretical" (for lack of a better term - Kiana help me out here) courses?

Many students think they want to be Math majors because they love Calc.  Upper level courses are quite different (bolded).

I am an applied math type person myself - did not like Abstract Algebra etc.

Have her read through an Abstract Algebra text before moving too fast.

    Mark

Yes - this. If she's only taken Calc I (?), she does not really know if she will like upper level math.
