  1. What do you think you'll use for algebra 2? I just want him to be solid on these skills in order to do well on college entrance exams, etc.
  2. Yes, he went through the 800 level with CLE. I think he started in level 400. After the 700 level we tried Saxon algebra for only about a month. He hated it, I hated it! We went back to the 800 level as he does not have an "algebra" brain, so I thought one more year of maturity would help him. This year we started Larson with the fake chalkdust DVDs. He has been doing okay. Low A average, but he said it it starting to get to the point where it is explaining new concepts, and he is afraid that he is quickly getting behind. He doesn't like how it explains it--too technical for someone without a math brain. I do not have time daily to explain each lesson to him. The DVDs help, but he said they don't explain everything. He has completed 2 out of the 8 units in the past 2 months. I don't have CLE yet.
  3. What are the cons/negatives to this program? I know about it not including geometry and the fact that there are no more sunrise editions completed. What else should I know about this curriculum? Is it rigorous? Does it prepare for upper math courses? I feel like I read someone's big negative about it, but now I can't find it or remember what it was. We have tried 2 other algebra programs, but my ds (who completed through the 800 level) is asking to go back to CLE because it is written to the student and explained in less "mathy" terms. Any insight would be great before I buy yet another program!

  5. Does anyone know of a plan for this text? How much is supposed to be completed each day? We are also using the generic "Chalkdust" dvd go-alongs. Thanks!
  6. I have a question regarding the live class vs the delayed recorded class. If my child is signed up for the live class, will he also have access to the recorded(delayed) class? I am thinking this would be very helpful in case of sickness or if there is another reason that he may need to miss class. Also, if he must be absent for a class time, would this affect his grade? How would this be handled? I like the idea of a live class for interaction, but now that you are offering a delayed option, I wonder if I should switch. Please let me know if he will have access to the delayed class as well if enrolled in the live class. Thank you.
  7. Is there any type of website that lists different warnings for books? I would love a breakdown of language, s*x, inappropriate things, etc. in each book--kinda like the movie review websites. I know Tapestry of Grace does an excellent job of this, but is there anything for other books. For example, Bridge to Teribithia is a great book, but I'd kinda like to know of the language before handing it over to my child without discussing it. I know I should just pre-read all the books, but I can't keep up with 4 kids!
  8. Thank you. Can anyone else confirm that these videos are not as complete as the "generic"? I wondering if my son would do better if I just bought the generic dvds if it really is more comprehensive. He seems like he will need as much instruction as possible.
  9. bummer....do you have the original chalkdust dvds or the generic? So you are thinking these online videos contain even less teaching than the generic ones?
  10. Oh my goodness! and these are the same as the dvd series like this? I just want to make sure they are the full version. Can anyone verify? Thank you so much! http://www.amazon.com/Elementary-Algebra-Media-Enhanced-Ed/dp/0618753966/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1400083989&sr=8-3&keywords=elementary+algebra+larson+dvd ETA: It seems like the videos go with the 6th edition. Have you had any issues with it lining up with the 5th edition? Which edition is the common core edition?
  11. Thank you so much! Which edition of the dvds match the 5th edition? I was hoping to find them used.
  12. I am wondering if there is much difference between the 4th and 5th edition. Also, do the generic DVD's match either edition or do I need to match them up? Thanks!
  13. Yes, I have used All About Spelling and even Apples and Pears. His breakthrough came when he learned how to increase his visual memory. Once he can picture the word in his brain, he is doing much better! Hoping someone else can chime in as to how important formal grammar is with these kind of kids.
  14. That is what I am wondering--how big of a deal is it? This child can write well! Other than punctuation/capitalization and spelling (dyslexia?), his papers are very well thought out, logical, creative, etc. When he does grammar lessons, it is like banging his head against a wall. It is either too much or too abstract or something! If I break it down into little steps and talk out each and every sentence, he can understand, but honestly, is it helpful and a good use of our time? This child was a late reader due to vision issues, but after VT and remedial work, he is coming along nicely. He loves to read! Spelling has improved, but still has a long way to go.
  15. My ds is finishing 6th grade, and he seems to have a mental block with grammar skills. If I isolate skills (find all the verbs, etc) he does great, but once they are all combined (name the part of speech, fix the punctuation), he just can't do it. We have used some levels of CLE and Abeka, but also things like The Sentence Family, Schoolhouse Rock, etc. Honestly, I'm finding it hard to continue with full blown grammar programs. He writes beautifully with well thought out, complex and varied sentence structure with plenty of quality verbs and adverbs and clauses. He wouldn't be able to identify them though! LOL How important is it that he knows and can identify what a Direct Object or an Appositive is in a given sentence? I do know that he needs help with punctuation and capitalization rules. I'm tempted to just stop formal grammar and work double time on his editing skills. Can you all give me feedback as to whether this is a good idea or not? He is ready to go into 7th grade.
  16. I've been using TOG (and love it), but just feel the need to have a more streamlined year next year! I have enough literature on my shelves, so I'm sure we'll be fine if I just assign some books. Thanks!
  17. Thank you for your reply! Very helpful! Is all the work on the computer or do they have additional work to do on their own--writing or project ideas?. I know it has a literature selection, but is that just assigning the reading? Is there any work to go along with the books?
  18. I am thinking ahead to next year, and was wondering if anyone has used this with a 7th grader. I know it is only supposed to go up to 6th grade, but if there was a way add some gentle logic level work/questions to this program, I think it'll be an excellent fit for my son. He is delayed in reading/writing, but ready to move onto higher level thinking skills. We'd be using the Middle Ages program. Any thoughts on how to make this work?
  19. Do you have any links or samples of such activities?
