  1. I'm in the same situation as my daughter will start 9th grade next year. I am not really concerned about accreditation (there are actually some public high schools that are not accreditted). My issue is record keeping - not my strong point at all.

There are different ways to go about this other then an umbrella school. You can simply do a diploma program like the one PA Homeschoolers offers http://www.phaa.org/. (There are others like Erie Homeschoolers, Mason Dixson...). You do all your own stuff they just require that you complete certain courses (in this case ones that comply with the PA law like 4 years of English, 3 years of math, etc). They don't require specific curriculum and they keep all the records for you and prepare the transcript and diploma. The fee is minimal. I do NOT feel that homeschoolers need to do a diploma program. From all the research I have done it really doesn't make any difference when applying to colleges.

I personally am looking for something that will give us a more planned out curriculum and some accountability so I have been looking at some umbrella schools like Kolbe and Seton...but not really for the diploma more for the record keeping and organization!

  2. We tried it and my girls did not like it at all. I kept trying but eventually just gave up. On a good note - the company was great about taking it back. I got a 100% refund after almost 6 months. That was a huge relief because I had purchased the first 3 modules! We wanted so much to like it but it just wasn't for us. So, you could always try it and know that they will take it back no questions asked...

  3. I really am not too interested in a diploma - from what I've been researching colleges really don't look for that anyway. So maybe I'll use some courses from Seton and then the girls will have some accountablility and see how that works for us. I'll have to go back and look at the high school classes and see what they have for 9th grade. We might do a co-op for biology and writing so maybe we'll try some history and english with Seton...I really like Kolbe but just can't seem to get past three years of ancients! I know my daughter would get tired of it and want to do more recent history and literature....I also like Oak Meadow but it is too expensive to enroll so I would just use the course plans from them....I think at this point my daughter would benefit from feedback from someone other then me! Working more independently also needs to happen here - esp for my younger daughter!!!!!

Thanks for all the help. High school scares me! I know my daughter will go on to college and I want to make sure she is prepared. We've been pretty relaxed the past few years so I need to bring them back to reality next year!

  4. I have never seen TT on sale but I do sell my TT every year on eBay and always make out very well. Last year I sold TT6 and only needed to spend a mere $30.00 difference to buy the TT7 new. I also will need Geometry this year and also Pre-Algebra but I will wait and sell my TT7 first. I will keep the Alg 1 for my youngest...they alwways have free shipping. I did tryu to get a discount at a convention last year and they don't even do that...

  5. Thanks for all the ideas. I really like Kolbe because of the flexibility but I'm not sure we want to spend 3 years on ancients for history and lit and those are the courses I am really looking for for next year.

The Catholic part really doesn't bother me (I was raised Catholic and my husband is Irish Catholic) as long as it isn't totally pervasive throughout all the courses.

I also like Oak Meadow for the curriculum with lesson plans. I don't think we would "enroll" there though.

I have also looked into Great Books with Angelicum.

Someone just give me the magic answer to high school please!

  6. Thank you that's just what I need - plans and accountability! I have a friend whose son is in 11th grade and they use Kolbe so I'll talk with her. Maybe I'll use their science and lit/english and use Oak Meadow for history because my daughter really wants to do US history (but then the lit and history would not line up). We like our current math so I probably won't change that. I don't mind the Catholic content (I was raised Catholic and my husband is Irish Catholic) but we chose not to raise our kids Catholic so I don't want them to be overwhelmed but it also wouldn't hurt for the girls to understand the Catholic faith since their entire family is Catholic!

  7. I think we need something that is pretty much planned out for us and some sort of accountability. This year has not gone well. I am not one that can "pull together" curriculum from various sources which I have learned the hard way this year. My oldest is starting high school next year and I think I am starting to stress a lot over it and the fact that this year has been such a bust...

I am not sure I like the lit or history with Kolbe but I like the idea of how they let you switch classes and the overall flexibility. Seton is just so reasonably priced but seems a little behind for my soon to be 9th grader so she would be taking mostly 10th grade classes...

I am just so unsure of what to do next year....ugh!!!!

  8. I also have a daughter who will be in 7th grade next year that does not like to read at all! She does not have any learning disabilities and always scores in the upper 90's in reading on standardized testing. She comprehends everything she reads and has an OK vocabulary for an 11 year old. I have no idea what to do with her - it's a constant battle. My other daughter is going to be in 9th grade next year and absolutely loves to read (books of her choosing!). I think it's just the personality of the child maybe?

I would love to use more living books but I just don't see how we could do that so I am looking in a different direction for next year...

I'll be interested to read the responses you get here.

  9. My friend makes an appointment with the superintendants office at her school district and brings in her portfolios for them to review while she waits. She won't leave them there.

We have very different degrees of homeschool "friendliness" here in the local school districts. One district allows homeschoolers to come in and take classes at the schools (elementary-high school) such as lab science, foreign language in the high school and "specials" such as gym, art, music at all grade levels. The are very inclusive. Then some do everything they can do to prohibit homeschoolers from even participating in sports by requiring ridiculous forms that need to be delivered to the school every Friday by noon stating that the student has had a good attitude and is passing and had a certain number of hours in school. My local district recently changed all the music, band, chorus classes and activities into graded classes/subjects to keep the homeschoolers out. They even consider the school play part of the curriculum...just wish there was some continuity.

  10. She is currently using TT (teaching textbooks)for geometry. We used TT for Alg 1 as well. I know some people think that program is too easy but she was only in 7th grade for algebra 1 and it worked well for her. She wanted to stay with it for geometry in 8th grade. I feel it did give her a good solid understanding of algebra. She was helping a friend this year who is using Saxon Algebra 1 and my daughter had no problem explaining the concepts to her friend so I feel she must have learned and retained the information from last year.

My daughter is very bright and math has always come easy to her but she just doesn't like the subject. TT has made it somewhat enjoyable for her so that has made my life easier too! We plan to stay with TT all the way and then she can take some advanced math at a college level if she chooses to go that route.

Good luck! I stress over curriculum choices all the time - especially with high school coming on strong next year!

  11. Thank you - I am freaking out about the whole high school thing next year! I just wish I was more organized and able to pull stuff togeher but I have found out the hard way that I just cannot do that! My daughter takes a writing class with our co-op and she has an excellent grammar background so I am not too concerned about those aspects but I do need some sort of planned lit/english pogram. I have looked at Lightning Lit and wondered about that too...

  12. yes it is expensive but I really need to be more organized and have something that is planned out for me. I don't want to go to cyber school but I am even considering that since we are just not able to get it together this year. I just would like to know if it is worth the $$$ before buying it...
