You will find that employers in retail, food service, etc. will LOVE hiring moms (aka "grownups") who want to work nights and weekends!

    Great! Thank you!!

I think my biggest concern is food. I do all the planning/cooking right now and I have to admit that it's already very stressful for me. My husband is planning to step up and help out more but I just don't know how it's all going to work.

  2. Are you trained in something?

I have retail experience. Before I became an at-home mom I was an assistant manager at a home decorating store. So I'm looking for work along that line. I'm wondering if bosses are generally okay hiring homeschool moms who want nights and weekends.

  3. My girls would have loved them! My oldest daughter has requested cheesecake a few times for her birthday - the first time was when she was 7 or 8. But we all are big cheesecake lovers. I joke that that's how I won my husband. I made him a cheesecake when we were dating and he was mine from then on!

The cherry cake sounds lovely! Thank you for sharing the recipe.

  4. Can one be an OE creationist? If so, what does that belief system look like?

I'm an Old(er) Earth Creationist and I don't believe in evolution. I believe that I actually take the bible more literally than YEC. My belief system is called The Gap or Ruin-Reconstruction. Here is an article that explains it: http://kjvbible.org/gap_theory.html, and another one that is also important: http://kjvbible.org/satan.html

In a nutshell, the belief is that there was a gap of time between Genesis 1 when God created the heaven and the earth, and Genesis 2. The 7 days are 7 literal days. There are many, many reasons why I believe the Gap to be the truth, but one of the biggest clinchers for me is found in the following two verses:

Gen 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Isa 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited:

Those phrase "without form" and the word "vain" are translated from the same Hebrew word - tôhû. In Genesis 2 we find the earth in a state that God did not create it in.

ETA: I don't believe that this is a salvation issue.

  5. This thread has been such an encouragement to me!! Thank you, Adrienne, for posting it, and thank you Lori and Jann for your replies. I'm going to print this!

My oldest will be 15 soon. She *is* behind, especially in math, but we are finally making progress! Do I need to think about starting a transcript now or is that something that I do when she is 18 and I just look back over what we've done?

  6. We use Taste of The Wild for our dog that we buy at a feed store. It's totally grain free and is a 5-star food at dog food advisor. We pay 27.50 for a 15 lb bag, which lasts us about 3 months. They have a 30 lb bag which is a better deal in the long run.

We first bought the venison and bison, this time we got salmon.

If I had to buy grocery store food I think I'd go with Iams.

  7. I just recently made these muffins in bulk by tripling the recipe:

    http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/pear-walnut-muffins-10000001142032/

I left off the extra sprinkle of sugar on the top.

As usual, I baked one pan worth and froze the rest.

I use foil muffin tin liners, fill them slightly more than usual and then place the filled muffin tins in the freezer sitting as flat as possible. After a little more than an hour, the muffins are frozen enough to pop out of the tins. I then package them in a zipper freezer bag. When we want fresh muffins I stick the frozen muffin batter filled cups back into the tins and bake, adding a few more minutes to the cooking time, for example if the muffins normally bake for 20-22 minutes, I will bake them for 28-30 minutes from frozen batter. I also don't bake at any higher than 350 degrees, but that is because my muffin tins are dark.

Thank you SO much for this tip! I never thought to freeze the batter. What a great idea!

  8. I learn something new every day... thanks :001_smile:

I still don't understand why they would be in hell in the first place.... but I'm not christian, so there are lots of things I just don't understand. I've enjoyed reading your thoughts ladies :001_smile:

I believe that all those who died before Christ came who believed in God went to what some call "Abraham's Bosom", which is a holding place of sorts but is not actually Hell. When Jesus died he went there, preached to them (1 Peter 3:19) and gathered all those who were His.

This understanding comes from Luke 16:19-31

Luk 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

Luk 16:20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

Luk 16:21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

    Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

Luk 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

Luk 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

Luk 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

Luk 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

Luk 16:27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:

Luk 16:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

Luk 16:29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

Luk 16:30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

Luk 16:31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

  9. Because while I know that it is true, I struggle with reality of where I've been in life. My life leaves me feeling abandoned by Him, or worse that he isn't who he says he is, and yet everything I read rings true to me. I keep going, because I know I need to. I still spend a lot of time screaming at Him.

:grouphug: Could it be wrong theology that is the problem, and not God himself?

Show me faith without works and I will show you my faith by my works? Isn't that what Paul said?

That was James. "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say , Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works." (James 2:17-18)

Paul said "Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." (Romans 4)

He also said, "And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work." (Romans 11)

Faith without works is dead - meaning there is no faith. But true faith will naturally produce works. Our works prove (justify our claim) that we have faith.

We don't work to be saved. We work because we are saved.

  10. I'm so frustrated with this program, I just gave up and asked for a refund.

I canceled as well. I emailed them asking if automatic bumping and the ability to assign multiple lessons starting in the middle of a book (not at "1") would be available in the very near future (not 6 to 18 months from now) and if not I was going to cancel. They responded that those features would be available "at some point during this school year" - which means they have 9 months.

But after talking to my dh about it I realized that even if they came back and said it would be available in September I would still cancel, because I just don't trust the company now.

So I replied that I was canceling. That was two days ago and I expected a reply today but none came.

Yeah, I gave up weeks ago and input everything into Scholaric. I am so glad I did, I love it! I was waiting for the final release of WPD before I asked for a refund, but they are dragging their feet so long I am going to have to go ahead and cancel so I don't miss the 30 day window. So bummed. Maybe it was me, but I could not get it to do anything lesson plan/assignment-wise that I needed unless I manually put it in one by one... ick.

Anyway, I am now a happy Scholaric customer! ;)

Me too! :D The more I use Scholaric the more I like it.

  11. Jennifer, thank you for all your help. :)

In the "5 Quick Scholaric Tips" section it says "Make sure you set your default schedule for every course, using the course menu in the planning grid." - I have no idea what this is even talking about!

Oh, and Yay! I just realized that the vacations/holidays I entered for one child automatically show up for all. :hurray: I thought I was going to have to mark days off for each child.

  12. I recently bought a swingline one and have been using it to make books for my dd's school. We use the Robinson Curriculum and while most of the books from the booklist are now available for the kindle, not all of them are. So I've made 3 books so far, with one waiting to be bound.

I also made a booklet manual with info on how to use Scholaric.com yesterday with the stapler.

  13. I'm not sure what you mean about specific titles. I schedule different readers within my history assignments, so those titles show up.

What I mean by specific titles is, I like to have more than just "Lesson 1, Lesson 2" etc - if a book has "Lesson 1 - Adding Single Digits", "Lesson 2 - Adding Double Digits", etc. For the purpose of record keeping I like the option of being specific if I want to. I know I can click on each day and do something like that with each lesson individually. I was just wondering if there was a way to edit a series of lesson titles quickly and save them all at once like on Homeschool Skedtrack.

    7825897842_63993643ae_c.jpg

I really like this feature, but I find HS Skedtrack to be too cumbersome and confusing to use overall.

One more question (for now :001_smile:) - Scholaric doesn't have a library feature where you can add books to be used later. Do you just create lessons for the books as you get to them or do you add several of them in under History or Literature and then just schedule them when you are ready?

  14. Thank you! I've been reading the blog and trying to get acquainted with it.

I think I might write to the developer and see if it would be possible to have a initial set-up feature that would set parameters for all users. There are certain days that we won't be doing school do to other events going on, and right now it seems I have to go through the whole year for each student to mark those days off.

  15. I've decided to try Scholaric and possibly cancel my subscription to My Well Planned Day software. I have a few days left to decide. So I signed up for a free trial to scholaric just now.

I've created a few course titles for a student, but I'm not seeing how to create a series of lessons that then automatically get assigned to certain days.

ETA: Well, I sort of found it. But on the Calendar it showed up as Lesson 61 to 141...on every day.

So with Scholaric, you can't edit the series of lessons to throw in a test within the lesson plan if you want, or give specific titles to the lessons?

It seems like the only planner that will do what I want is Simply Charlotte Mason and it's too expensive. :(

  16. Does anyone know if they are planning to make the Lesson Plans more customizable? If we are in the middle of a book (as we are) I don't want the calendar to say "Lesson 1" when we are really at lesson 60! I tried to trick the system by entering all the lessons from the book and adding assignments starting at Lesson 60, but then I can only add them one by one, which would take forever! I can only add bulk assignments if I start at "1".

I'm starting to get frustrated with this thing. I've got 2 weeks until my 30 days is up. Personally I think the 30 day trial should start for everyone when the full version is released. I can't even enter an event on the calendar. When I hit "save" it just sits there doing nothing.

  17. Is anyone here actually using it for anything yet?

I bought it shortly before the $40 sale ended. The clincher for me was knowing I could get the 2nd year for $40 as well. I *hope* that it will be really good soon but I'm losing faith that the full release this month will work the way I think it should.

Two of my daughters are in the same math book, but in different places. I entered the book under Curriculum, chose that it was for both girls to use, then tried to create a lesson plan and discovered that there was no easy way to say that one girl is starting on Lesson 62 while the other is on Lesson 16. All the Lessons start at "1" and showed up for both girls on the calendar.
