  1. Your guy's counting issues sound a lot like my d. She couldn't count objects at around that age and now she does very well, for the most part(she still misses a number sometimes). Right Start helped her tremendously with math. We use ETC and Phonics Road for reading. We did the ETC ABC books over and over and then the 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5.... over and over too. It took her a looooong time with a lot of work and tears and frustration. She's making steady progress now but its been a lot of work 6-7 days a week. By all means take him to a specialist and have him evaluated. Good Luck.
  2. Wow! Thanks so much for the great replies! I'm leaning toward Pentime even though it's religious. It seems like the easiest-prettiest one. Thanks again,
  3. Opinions please on the prettiest cursive to get a child started with... Thanks
  4. My daughter also has speech/learning issues. She has repeated books 2 or 3 times and done the half books too. Just keep trucking. They are where they are. We do it 6-7 days a week. Using more than one program has really helped my daughter. With my different little tyke, hitting her from more than one angle is imperative. I totally understand your concern about keeping up, especially when your kiddo has some late blooming and learning issues. It's scary to have the responsibility of making sure they are okay and constantly questioning whether you are doing enough or too much or the wrong stuff, or... ARGGGGG! And I thought this homeschooling thing was going to be easy...:willy_nilly: Take Care, you are not alone:grouphug:
  5. My almost seven year old struggles with many of her letter names but reads at the second grade level. Her speech issues exacerbate this. It can be embarrassing when it comes out in public that she doesn't know or that she can't say the alphabet (not for lack of my trying to teach her), but we just hold our freak heads high.
  6. Looking for a shortish book or many about the gold rush specifically california but any will do. Thanks
  7. Thanks everyone! We're going SOTW!
  8. Slugging through CHOW (children's history of the world-revised ed.) and not feeling like much is sticking should we drop it and switch to SOTW? Thoughts...? Its really hard for me not to finish something but I'm feeling like were wasting our time... but should we stick with it? Anyone had similar experience? We're atheist but don't mind references. Thanks,
  9. I would focus on math, right start is an awesome program if he loves letters maybe a computer program or learn the sign language signs for the letters and use the letter sounds instead of names. It's such an uphill battle when the sounds aren't there. He's young enough that you don't need to worry about him falling behind. I'd choose an easier path. How about music? Suzuki music lessons have been a huge benefit for my dd. she started when she was just turning 3. Good luck, such a smart kiddo, he's gonna be fine. Take care,
  10. My daughter had a really hard time grasping counting even at 5.5yo. We tried Horizons K when she was nearly 6 and it was a complete failure. I stopped after a few months of pushing through hoping things would get better and started Right Start A. After a month of RS we added Horizon K back in as a supplement. We've been going strong ever since clipping along pretty successfully. With my kiddo it is really important to hit her on a couple of sides with different approaches.
  11. I'm a desperate woman. We've been working on music note memorization for a veeeeeeerrrrrrry looooooong time. Can someone hear my voice in the wilderness and heeeellllllpppppp!!!!! flash cards have been a very depressing failure. Please don't say flash cards... flashcards, no, no, NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO! PLEASE HELP PLEASE HELP PLEASE HELP.... Thanks,
  12. Than you all! I'm busy placing holds at the library... I knew I could count on the hive!
  13. Right Start Math and Explode the Code My daughter has some learning issues but RS got her from not being able to count individual objects at age 5.5 to adding large numbers in her head, beginning multiplying, etc. one year later. And she knows she is capable and good at math, her confidence awesome! ETC is fun and cheap enough so I don't worry about her repeating the books several times for fluency and fun enough so she doesn't hate me for making her... at least not very much.
  14. My daughter is obsessed with animal evolution but very young (almost 7). Does anyone know of a great animal science book with pictures/ charts/etc... that focuses on evolution? no intelligent design please... Thanks,
  15. I've looked and it says to enter my tv provider and password etc. My cable doesn't have anything like that... HELP!!!!:crying:
  16. Please help, I missed yesterdays (7-4) show. Does anyone know how to download the show or find it somewhere. I'm so sad...
  17. My dd has been playing a couple of years. I sit with her the whole time. Its not just that she needs the structure but I think it'd be lonely and isolating to have to sit there in front of the rather intimidating instrument. But if it works, run with it. I use stuffed animals to give advice and encouragement. Helps both of us keep it light. Good luck. It can be very challenging and I understand your frustration.
  18. I loved Brave! It was so refreshing that there wasn't a save the day prince. The horse was gorgeous and dear. The mom was real, not angelic but dead or an evil step mother. She and her daughter love each other fiercely. Mirida's facial expressions, yes and her hair were wonderful. Love, love, loved it!
  19. I found exactly the same thing happening with my d. I stopped Horizon for a couple weeks while I started RightStart A it made all the difference!!! We stopped using the number lines and use the abacus instead, she needs it much less than she used to. I hesitated using it because I thought it was going to be too time consuming or crafty but its not. While I don't love it or always understand the why of it, its easy to implement and has benefited d. One of the biggest helps was referring to numbers by the RightStart way.(nine ten, instead of ninety, etc.) We redid the Horizon and have continued. Dd calls RS fun math and Horizons, easy math.
  20. I'm looking to supplement RightStart B with another math. This year we did Horizon K which has gone great. Singapore math seems so popular that I am tempted to switch to that. Horizon seems to be much less popular. Is there a good reason for this? Thanks!
  21. I don't use it but... The founder is so nice! I'm not Mormon but she spent so much time explaining things to me and never once was she pushy about it. I love that she supports both Suzuki music and Montessori methods. She has tons of ideas for little ones and there is a great yahoo group that she contributes to.
  22. Thank you and what a great point, what role do I want science to play... I guess, it depends on her reaction to it. At this point I want her to be interested and intrigued. Thanks,
  23. I'm wondering if there is more scrutiny for filing your own affidavit. Is it safer and more likely to remain legal to file under a private isp? Also, is there more privacy ny filing with a private isp. Thanks,
  24. I'm looking for a secular and not too crafty (I don't have the time for a lot of prep and I can't have many lessons necessitating a trip to the store) science. Anyone know just the thing? Thanks,
