  1. We used Horizon Math as a supplement. It is a more american style math program and I wanted her exposed to both kinds of questioning. We dropped it near the end of RS C. But we did do both concurrently.
  2. Thanks Jessica! Downloading as we speak! Barefoot Atlas is amazing! I was enthralled last night! Is there a similar app with more info? Thanks all!
  3. Is there an app to teach the ABCs in order? My daughter is still struggling with this- the song is not sticking. It's a language issue for her. That darned song is just too much of a tongue twister but she needs to know it for alphabetizing and etc.. ????
  4. Harry Potter Spells--- I think I have the iPhone app on my iPad which might account for the glitchiness. My daughter loves hp so much she doesn't seem to mind that it occasionally crashes.
  5. My dd is loving the Ipad her favorites are: Math Mathews Stack the States/Countries Reading Raven Freefall Spelling Flash Note Derby Monster Sushi the Brave video game Harry Potter Spells Any apps your kids love? Especially educational. I'd especially love to know about one that is more advanced than Reading Raven but not to the level of book reading. Apps that have been a flop: Monster Physics Numbers League I See Sam Thanks all!
  6. Thanks so much just the jumping off point I needed! THANKS!
  7. I'm sure this has been asked before but I'm not having luck searching. Does anyone have any ideas for an only child and her ipad. She's 7.5. We inherited it. It only has angry birds, one book on the kindle, and a tiny piano right now. I'm not tech savy. We have the dummies guide. I think I need the super duper dummies guide. Any apps or anything you guys recommend? She liked angry birds at first but is pretty bored with it now. I'd like something educational... but fun things are great too. Thanks for any help.
  8. This is awesome! I would love to have this option! Do you live in southern California? This sounds like a dream come true. Problems- 1. hsers can be cheap, 2. getting your name out there 3. people afraid to air their dirty laundry 4. I'm not a christian so I'd prefer a secular professional but quite a few of the religious people I know don't like the thought of a secular professional judging their child's difficulties, hence the hsing Do you live in an area with tons of hsers? It seems like a viable at least part-time option. You could make contacts through yahoo groups maybe. You Go!
  9. I haven't read any replies but your post was a wonderful blast of fresh air to me. There is so much pressure to love this and sail through like a calm, ship's figurehead. Unruffled, doing the difficult job of homeschooling no matter the distractions and often I feel like I'm tearing my hair out on the inside and wear this serene mask on the outside. Thanks for the frank vent. I love you, man. Take Care, Amanda
  10. The special needs board might have some good advice for you. I have a similar kiddo. When she's not happy, all bets are off and she goes for the jugular, metaphorically speaking. It's sad and I cry sometimes too. The Strong- Willed book sounds good, I'm gonna check it out. Thanks for posting your frustration. It helps to know you're not alone.
  11. With all the talk of where are you in the school year, I'm wondering, what do you ladies consider a school day? I have been counting days where at least reading/writing and math and music practice all got done for my 7yo. But lately I'm wondering if maybe I can count our music lesson/ barn/ speech therapy days? What are your minimum perimeters for school days for what age?
  12. We use Phonics Road and ETC along with extra I Can Read Books, it's going well even though my kiddo has speech issues.
  13. Homeschooling is hard especially for the more difficult kids. And you have two with special needs. I'm so sorry you are feeling beaten down. I sure understand. My only is the same age as your older. It is really difficult to teach a kid with issues. It's scary too. So much responsibility. What you are doing is hard and it takes awesome perseverance and chocolate, in fact, I'm eating some for you right now! I think you should join me. We school every day, except days like Thanksgiving or sick days. It really helps not to have a break with mine and that way every day is less stress. Even if it's a short day, just one thing, like math or history and the rest is errands or lessons or the beach... that's one more subject done for the week. Breathe... eat chocolate... repeat... The hive is with you...
  14. You guys are awesome! I'm surprised that people think its obvious. Have you seen people's signatures and blogs? I thought you'd yell at me for skimping on geography, social science, science, logic, foreign language... I wasn't prepared for the intense worry part of homeschooling. Silly me, I thought it'd be such a clear and obvious path but I'm plagued by doubt. Phonics Road is a complete language arts curriculum with spelling and reading and narrations. She reads pretty well, she is working through Little House in the Big Woods but needs my help with words every 3 lines or so. So, not fluent but getting there. I don't love how it teaches grammar hence the FLL. We also do simpler books for practice for 15ishmin /day. I agree that Science is not getting done enough. I'm really considering the Wtm approach. Picked up some resources from the library today. I wish that we could be less rigid but I have a kid that needs the structure. To those that said it borders on too much, other than the music, what do you mean? Is it the 2 Maths? The horizon is easy but I really like that it makes her do some more American style traditional math just in case she is ever tested in more that style... I would love to do art. I'm gonna research what wtm says and then try to stick it in somewhere. Thanks again so much ladies. I know you choose what to spend your time responding to so thanks a million.
  15. I know her music is a lot but it is important to her and she loves her teachers. We've slowly increased the time, she has been playing for 3 and 4 years. It comes pretty natural, at the point. I worry that she isn't doing enough school work. What do you think?
  16. She just turned 7. Reading- Phonics road 5x/week, Etc- we used to do it everyday as a supplement but time has been getting away from me and so now its more like 2x/week, FLL1- 2x/week Math- Right Start C 5x/week, Horizons 2 5x/week ( I use this as a bit of review and drill) it is easy for her. Handwriting- Pentime 2 5x/week -she likes this and is looking forward to cursive History- SOTW Ancients 3x/week with supplemental books from reading lists from library, activity book activities, haven't started doing written narrations yet- its been getting away from me Science- 1x/2weeks- I'm thinking of switching over to the WTM Science recommendations and have a whole bunch of books at the library to pick up and look over-- This is just not getting done enough Piano- 1 hour/day Violin- 1 hour 15 min/day Mom reads aloud- 1 hour-ish/day Speech therapy 2x/week swim lessons 2x/week ballet 1x/week barn/pony time 2x/week Thank you for any input. After I've written it all down it doesn't seem too shabby but I worry about messing her up with my crummy homeschooling. Are we doing enough? Please be brutal...
  17. For signing I thought of fun or useful signs and then looked them up online. I simplified ones that were too difficult. My daughter came up with some. Its been a long while but off the top of my head--- dirty mad beautiful all animals (dog, cat, horse...) bath milk colors (blue, red...) listen focus careful thank you/ please wait be patient Introduce slowly as needed. My daughter loved signing. It changed our life. BE prepared for people to let you know how you are ruining her chances of ever talking though. You'll need a thick skin.
  18. I haven't read closely but do you sign with her? Signing changed our life. Read well trained mind the preschool years. She is inspiring.
