  1. You know you homeschool an only when you have long standing imaginary students, complete with back stories, relatives and outside interests.
  2. My 8yodd and I both loved it! Great mother/daughter date movie!
  3. I'm torn between a 20x simple kid version and a nicer one. She's only 8 and while she loves science movies, like Cosmos, she isn't a science nerd, yet (still keeping fingers crossed). I don't want her to be underwhelmed or overwhelmed, I love the thought of a nicer dissecting microscope but I don't want to turn her off with too much microscope. Her one stipulation is it must be binocular. (2 eyeholes) Experiences??? Thanks,
  4. Rosie, you are so brave. I so appreciate you sharing your love and joy as a parent to this special guy. I cannot fathom your strength.
  5. I thought the very same thing with my dd when she was 3-4ish,I figured if I could teach her to read it would help with her speech. I used Ordinary Parents Guide but it didn't work for her. She didn't have enough sounds or the ability to remember letter sounds that she could not say. It wasn't for lack of reading aloud to her goodness knows, we did 2+ hours nearly everyday (but I loved that) and gave up teaching her to read for a while. I started her with Phonics Road at 5.5. It was arduous for both of us but the rules and focus on drill finally started to work. She is still a slow reader but at grade level. Her speech issues were severe though and for a while we thought she may not overcome them. With so many parents of early readers responding, I didn't want you to think that was everyone's story. I really, really recommend getting him evaluated. I took some bad advice from a very respected speech specialist that said my daughter would normalize on her own and therapy could be detrimental. It is amazing what a difference a good therapist can make.
  6. So many mentioned here have been our biggest hits: Loved: Mary Poppins Wind I the Willows Secret Garden Love the stories but really have a hard time with- Uncle Remus- great audio book to the rescue! I know it's sacrilege and I've never admitted this to anyone but... Winnie the Pooh is boring!!!! Aaarrrrgggg, I've said it. Can't think of any other mom read aloud fails but I love to read aloud. When dd was younger it was nothing for me to read 2+ hours a day. I miss it.
  7. 2nd the impacted crop idea. You can massage the area, sometimes it helps. I'm sorry, it's very sad, the poor babies. Since it's your 3rd chicken on 2nd thought... I'd check food and make sure it's not old or moldy.
  8. Sisters, thank you so much for posting your experiences and thoughts. I'm another mom who decided to homeschool to protect my child from potential bullies. My experiences and repercussions were/ are so similar to yours. I actually would not have had a child if I thought I'd have to put her in school. The bullying I endured has negatively impacted my life greatly. The terror and loneliness are always with me. Love and thanks to you all.
  9. Tick! Stomping will not kill it, you have to squeeze it with something hard against something hard until it pops!
  10. I would like to love your post! As a formerly bullied child, man, I could have used some real help! Asking an 8 yo to handle it against a 13yo, no way! I would talk to the 13yo's mom. This is bullying, not kids working out how to handle social situations.
  11. Single parent of an only, here! And I'm so so glad that I have only one! She is very challenging so Thank goodness I don't have to split my time with another child. If things had been different with her father, we probably would have had 2... But, I'm so so so glad that things worked out the way they did! Dd argues with our dog. They bicker quite a bit. She also pretends that there are several kids in her "class", usually kids from the current read aloud but there are a few core kids that have been with us for years. I get asked quite a bit about whether "we'll have more" but when they find out that I'm single, surprisingly , their desire for me to breed siblings, disappears. I've only been racked over the coals about the horribleness of having an only once and I really don't think the woman meant any harm. She really was worried about the fate of a lonely, only child. I was the oldest of four and her father was the youngest of 3. I can't imagine feeling bad once I hit the biological clock of no return. I loved being pregnant and her birth was a synch BUT babyhood was really rough. Dd cried and cried and cried and frankly it's not a good memory, at all. I find moms of onlies like to commiserate and talk about the pluses of having only one but quietly and in the hushed tones of a guilty pleasure. I don't have shame about it but I think a lot of moms of onlies (by choice) don't have many places where they feel comfortable letting their freak flag fly loud and proud.
  12. I lost my faith freshman year at a Christian College... Very difficult and lonely times. I still read extensively about Christianity because it fascinates me but I am an atheist. How do I know what I believe? Well, it seems the most reasonable. I don't KNOW... No one does! If people want to hedge their bet wth the side that makes the scariest threats, great but I'm not a good enough bluffer to convince an omnipotent god that I believe, when I don't and can't make myself... Bart Ehrman's Misquoting Jesus and Sam Harris' Letter to a Christian Nation (very short and readable) are wonderful. Your husband and son will benefit from seeing that you are looking for answers and it might quell worries that you are in rebellion to God but rather on a quest for understanding. Your question made me think of Sue Monk Kidd's book, The Dance of the Dissident Daughter. She had a remarkable faith journey that you may find interesting. Pm me if you want an ear. You need to find someone you can safely talk to about your doubts without fear of lecture or judgement. You are not alone.
  13. I loooove this forum!!!! The advertising angle seems reasonable to me.
  14. I wouldn't recommend it because it doesn't offer enough for the money they charge. But, if you decide it is for you, I would make sure you know who the teacher is going to be. Make sure you have a really good one. Someone who can keep things interesting, fun and orderly. The tutor must be a great one or you will be banging your head against the wall. Also, get a feel for the kids and culture of that particular CC. Some may be more well behaved and less chaotic than others. Good luck but I think you would be better off choosing a curriculum with memory work built in, like Memoria Press and having fun at home.
  15. I really liked Horizons with Right Start.
  16. My daughter started learning her letters and sounds at 6. She had a terrible speech delay that made learning letter sounds very difficult. I didn't fill out for fluency because I don't feel my 8yo is there yet... She doesn't read for fun. She has read Little House in the Big Woods, Charlotte's Web, The Courage of Sarah Nobel and some others but she reads them aloud to me and needs encouragement to keep going and help with some words. She reads slow but mostly because she doesn't enjoy it and is slow about all things she doesn't like. She tested at the beginning-ish of 3rd grade level on the Stanford Test a few weeks ago. So, is that fluent? It's a matter of opinion.
  17. Online- NPR, BBC, Aljazeera America, and Huffington (when I don't mind feeling smutty) TV- very occasionally PBS, Rachel Maddow, Daily Show, Bill Maher I'm not as informed as I used to be. So busy, so tired... But, I'm not a liberal, more of a scoffer... at all politics.
  18. Thanks, it seems very math focused. Not bad but looking for science. Is it really fun???
  19. We finally have a school room!!! I'd like to make little corners for self and teacher- directed science and art tables for my 8yo daughter. I'm thinking a microscope with slides, robotic stuff, electrical stuff, kits, etc... And then art supplies and how to drawing books, etc. Any ideas for a decorating/organizing deficient homeschool mom? I've been looking at Home Science Tools and Edmund Science. Not sure where to look for art. We are secular but don't mind if the company isn't as long as the supplies are.
  20. Have you looked at right start math? It was a miracle for my late bloomer. Can you school full time over the summer? The next year starts with a lot of review, it might give her the time she needs. Maybe an assessment?
  21. Don't you think this is also a way to have a uber religious version of the prom? Very sick, I agree!
  22. I also think it is important to remember that the program is many weeks (and years, if you continue), it may seem fine during the visit but you will be going every week... Our endurance has run thin towards the end of the year.
  23. We are secular and have done CC this year. We won't be going back . The people have been nice but it isn't worth the time, for us. We would have been better off using the materials at home and doing a history or science class with a group that more reflected our world view. The reason I joined was I couldn't wrap my head around memory work. (And of course a social outlet) The curriculum we used this year, memoria press, would have taken care of that though. I wouldn't rec it for secular people, not worth the time and frustration.
  24. I'm leaning toward something in a more enjoyable format than regular math curriculum. What would you rec life of Fred, beast academy or right start? We have done right start a,b, and c so d would be a natural. It seems you need to start from the beginning with life of Fred and I'm thinking for a summer review that might be too much. I like that beast seems to encourage thinking outside the box - and it's the appropriate grade level. Any thoughts for a hand wringer? Thanks a million!
  25. I like memoria press astronomy. Very open and go and we do it in congunction with D'aulaires Greek myths. No science experiments but it got done and there is amazing memorization. We are 2/3 through and haven't had much religion to skip. We don't memorize the bible verses but there was a fun poem that she likes to perform.
