I have a 7th grader who will be taking a few courses through Veritas Press next school year, while considering the prospect of pursuing their diploma program in high school.  Sharing your perspective on the diploma program would be welcome.  Particularly, I am wondering whether a) the workload is excessive for the humanities (it appears that one would be taking the equivalent of 8 or 9 credits each year instead of the standard 6, since their Omnibus courses span 3 credits and the remaining class load doesn't seem to be reduced) and b) whether your student felt he was living his entire life glued to the computer given the number, length, and frequency of the the classes.  It looks like a spectacular program, but I do have these questions about any actual experience you may have had.  Please advise!

Also, if you are ok with faith based education, have you looked at Schole Academy. Please check them out. Excellent, excellent. Deep reading and discussion with a goal of meaningful assignments and not busy work. ETA: We are not Catholic and most of the students in DS's classes have not been Catholic either.

Does anyone have experience with the government class offered by Scholé Academy and taught by Chris Marchand? I love the syllabus and required reading—just don’t have any knowledge of the provider or teacher. I have also considered Nathaniel Gilbert’s Outschool government class. It seems he is well-liked and has some great reviews from the hive. Many thanks on any insight!

Hi. I don't have experience yet but I just enrolled my 10th and 12th graders in that course. I noticed that it's a full year of Government, which is usually a semester, and doesn't officially include Economics. I love the sources used but as Catholics, we'll be keeping our eye on how the King James Bible is referenced. I'm planning on using Economics for Dummies and using the online quizzes for Econ, along with a personal finance class to cover that.

    I didn't investigate Outschool.

I know this thread is old but I wonder if either of you tried this class? We love Schole and I'm thinking of putting DS in his class next year. I would love to know your experiences.

  3. DS (9th grade) is super intelligent and a good writer, but he also struggles when answers aren't black/white, this might be why he loves math and is math strong. He is really struggling this year with some assignments for an online class. I know he has a decent reading speed/comprehension (he took the PSAT for this first time this year and literally made a perfect score for the reading section). He simply way, way, way overthinks open ended writing assignments, questions, or things like dialectic notes that are turned in. He spends far too much time trying to find the perfect answer. He is doing really well with the assignments, but they take him so much time that it feels like school is his life. We have battled through this for an entire semester. I've encouraged him, really pressed him to just get it done and not look for perfection, etc. He is just stuck in a rut with this and it is making my kiddo hate school. I found a therapist for OCD for him to try and his first appointment is in 2 weeks. What else can I try to help him with this? Any resources or thoughts y'all have are greatly appreciated.

    Thank you so much

Wait a second. Windows need to be replaced? Vs upgraded? And these prices are scaring me. Our home is 15-17 years old. How long do windows last?

Ouch on all of these guesses.

    Define replaced vs upgraded?

We replaced all of our windows over 15 years ago and on the south side of the house (where the sun is very strong) some of them are failing. They are clouded between glass and it’s driving me mad. We are looking to completely replace a few of them with larger windows when we remodel.

How are they doing with eating/ sleeping/ developing?

They don’t sleep as much as they’re supposed to and get a bit overtired at times. They usually take a decent nap in the crib in the mornings. Other than that, naps are hit and miss and not more than 20-30 minutes each. They sleep great at night with mama though so 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think they’re developing and eating fine. Great head control, tummy time is good, and they are strong. They are pretty quiet though. By now I think my babies were babbling more and putting together sounds like ma-ma-ma-ma and such. They don’t blow raspberries either. They make some sounds, just not like my babies did lol. It is so common for identical twins to have speech delays and researchers can’t figure out exactly why. So I chalk it up to this? They’ll get there in their own time.

ETA: eating has been great ever since the tie releases

  6. We are having a structure moved from DH's work to our own property. They needed it moved, it is a very nice building, and they couldn't get anyone to pay the moving fees, so we're paying the fees and having it moved here.

The driver will need to move it about 25 miles-ish and put it in place here. He will need two flagger cars. He said to have $2,200 cash on hand at delivery.

We were originally quoted $1,200 a year ago when this first came up so it is already more than we really planned, but will still be worth it.

It is a set fee for a job. I don't need to tip, right? or do I?

DH and I both have brown eyes and our eldest son has blue. Another son and his wife both have brown eyes and their son has blue. We must have this crazy blue gene in the family. LOL So, as old as these beautiful babies are, they probably will keep their gorgeous eyes. Thank you so much for sharing them with us today.

It is ok if they change but I think they will keep them. Mostly because they were dark and they changed on us. Also, they don't have brown flecks in the blue (usually an indication) and they just get lighter each week.

If they wanted people to “chill” they never should have done the interview. They could have released a simple statement through a family friend thanking people for all the help and asking for privacy as their daughter heals.

They are prolonging the story being in the spotlight by doing the interview

OR, simply saying "we need privacy, our daughter needs to heal" just fuels the speculation. People and media are vicious and you know that they have been torturing them for comments, begging for just a small interview....maybe this is their way of getting some peace. I love that you are so confident about what should be done or what you would do in these sort of situations. I have not a clue what I would do! I know how I would hope to handle it. The emotional load alone is enough to leave you at a loss or confused. Sometimes, if you don't speak up, others create their own reality in your absence.

    3. ~~We can’t talk about the case, but we’ll mention her kidnapper~~

Mentioning that there was a kidnapper isn't giving any case details. If my daughter was kidnapped (or I truly believed she was kidnapped) and she didn't have any history leading me to believe she was making it up and others were blaming her for a hoax, you better d@mn well believe I would drop, in passing, the mention of a kidnapper. Just to get people to chill.

ETA: Nothing has been mentioned about this girl having a history of this sort of thing. She seems like a very together person. If it were one of my dd's I would be so angry at people for assuming this about them.

  10. Idk y’all … I have no clue what happened but I’ll stand by my original sentiment - I just don’t get a hoax vibe from this family at all. I may eat those words later but my gut is pretty accurate 95% of the time. I guess we’ll know when we know 🤷🏻‍♀️

Don’t be surprised if the blue doesn’t stay. I was born with blue eyes, as was one of my sisters. Our parents both have brown eyes. Mine changed, hers did not.

My firstborn’s father had green eyes. He got blue. They changed.
My sister’s dd’s father had blue eyes. Hers stayed, of course.

Same with blond hair for me, that sister, ds, and dn. My parents were both blond as kids, but not as adults.

We have no idea if they’ll stick lol

They started out brown and changed to blue and seem to just get more blue with time so it’s likely they’ll stay blue but it’s really a gamble at this age.

    They are gorgeous!

They have very blue eyes that just keep getting more blue. DD and DSIL both have brown so we didn’t anticipate this at all. DH and DSIL’s dad both have blue eyes though so it’s genetically possible just wasn’t highly likely.

  13. I’m so sorry that you’re in that “feeling like you can’t keep your head above water stage” right now. I’ve been there a few times in life and it.is.hard! This will get better, probably not tomorrow or the next day, but it will. I’ve been at the end of my rope so many times especially with teens and young adults. Life has ups and downs - easy times and hard times. You’re in the hard and down time right now. Hang in there ❤️ Think on what you could alter, sure, but mostly just hang on.

No, I thought it was a hoax before she was found. The fact that she was found made it more likely to be a hoax. It could still be something else, but I think odds are in favor of a hoax at this point.

I don’t think a hoax is out of the question by any means. We know so little info that it is unkind to judge something from such a distance. But that’s how I approach most things in life. I don’t assume the worst of others unless there’s a known history.

  15. None of my kids have any debt so far. I still have one to go though.

Oldest went to a very very $$$$ college but on a full ride that even had stipends. She saved those and ended up with over $20,000 in savings which they used for part of a down payment on a home. If she hadn’t been offered that, she would’ve ended up paying about $8,000 a year at a different, but also expensive school, after her merit and financial aid. For us, the state school was the most expensive out of pocket option since dd had great aid everywhere.

2nd went to trade school and we were able to pay that as he went (never more than $1200 a semester, often only $600-800).  He got a job right out of school making over $30 an hour and just took a different job making $56 an hour. ETA: he just turned 22 so I feel that’s a pretty good outcome.

3rd skipped college and self trained to be a paralegal. She makes fairly good money and is able to work from home most days. She goes to the office once a week.

4th will be trickier but he’ll figure it out. I know with more income now and no other kids at home, they’ll expect us to pay more than the offers oldest dd got before she took the full ride. He may need to commute to the local university and that’s ok, we’ve mentally prepared him for that. He doesn’t want debt and won’t be ok with more than a small amount so he’ll go with the options that match that.

  16. I haven’t read all the replies and have no idea if this is legit or not but have y’all ever considered that a toddler might not have been reported missing because some sick person used their own child or a family member’s/friend’s child as bait??? ETA: If we stacked up the percentage of people who are truly victims vs liars/hoaxes, the victims would far far outweigh the hoaxes yet we still question victims like they’re all liars.
