  1. I have been going back and forth on which writing curriculum to use for this coming year. I have two boys one in Grade 5 (first time homeschooling) and one in Grade 8 (second and last year homeschooling).

Last year I used MCT, LL7 and Figuratively Speaking. I plan on continuing the Grammar part of MCT along with GWG. We enjoyed CE but I did find the format a little loose for our tastes. (Not enough written exercises to solidify the learning of the concepts.) That being said, I can say that we do enjoy workbooks with some together learning time mixed in.

For this year, I have been looking at SWB, WWW and IEW. I am not sure which to go with for the following reasons.

    IEW - SWI A or B

I think the boys would enjoy and benefit from the videos by learning from someone else and the incorporation of the humour into the teaching. In looking at the sample, I am concerned that there does not seem to be much variety in the writing. It seems that they are writing outlines and then paragraphs with banned words and requirements over and over again. The lack of variety may cause writing to become a painful subject.

I do believe that the boys would benefit from learning to summarize and outline. Once again I am concerned with respect to the variety of the exercises. This would also be okay for my Gr 5 but may not be enough of a challenge for my Gr 8.

    WWW

I really like the information provided in these books with respect to the different types of writing. For example how to write different types of essays such as persuasive, biographical, narratives etc. I didn't see this type of instruction in the other two programs. I was quite excited about this program until I heard some on the boards say there is not enough writing in it.

Ugh....I am looking for any advice you may have. For those who have already received and maybe even tried WWW I would like to hear your views on the writing requirements. Would it be possible to combine programs? I am a little hesitant to do this as I am already planning on using GWG (for the first time), MCT CE and grammar book, LL8 (for gr 8) and some type of literature guides (for gr 5).

Thank you. I really rely on this forum and the combined expertise.

  2. Thanks for putting my mind at ease with respect to MPH. I love Singapore Math and my eldest has done a mixture of Singapore Science (Interactive Science) with the text recommended for PS. I like the information presented in the Science text but it can move along quite quickly through subjects. Also, while using this level of Singapore Science I found the 'fun/experimental' side lacking so I was a little worried about MPH.

  3. My ds(10) is starting home school next year and I have been waffling back and forth with respect to a science curriculum. My son likes to use workbooks but also enjoys hands on learning.

I am looking for something that is fun but at the same time structured. My concern with respect to MPH 5/6 is that it will be all workbook learning with not much of the fun side of things. My concern with ES Biology (Logic Stage) is that my other son and I have used books such as History Odyssey and the jumbled layouts of the Kingfisher Encyclopedia are a distraction in understanding the information. I am afraid that the books ES uses may have a similar style.

Does anyone have insights that might help to steer me in one direction or the other?

    Thank you

  4. Ugh....just when I think that I've decided upon a curriculum for next year, something new pops up :glare:

I'm not sure whether anyone has had a chance to get a good look at the WWW curriculum yet but there's no harm in asking.

I had thought that I was going to have my ds(13) and my ds(10) using IEW SWI-B(or C) and SWI-A next year. Now that I have looked at WWW I am rethinking. My oldest will be homeschooling for his second and final year (before heading to high school) and my youngest will be starting his first home schooling year.

Any thoughts out there would be greatly appreciated.

  5. I just finished my first year homeschooling a grade 7 History buff. We used the Pearson History and Geography filp book as a spine. I was at a loss as to what to use and thus took a look at the Ontario trillium listed textbooks for schools. For history, I food that the DVDs Canada A People's History were excellent and many of the facts presented on the DVD corresponded with sections in the text.

  6. I am in my first year of homeschooling. My ds attended a french immersion school up to grade 6 (currently grade 7). I have been happy with the progress we have made in most subjects but I have this feeling that he is not learning as much with regards to writing as he should be. We have used MCT Town level this year and it has definitely given him a great grounding in grammar which he did not receive instruction in at school. He is now bored with the repetition of sentence analysis and I must say that neither of us really enjoyed Building Poems. (We are just much more interested in mathematics.) As far as literature and analysis, we have done independent studies on Animal Farm, Diary of Anne Frank and have started working with LL7.

ds will be attending public high school in grade 9 and his sister has come home from high school mentioning the troubles she had with respect to writing good thesis statements, etc in her grade 9 english class. Is there a curriculum out there that you would recommend which would cover these concepts. In my opinion, my son is a very good writer but I would like to help him learn to structure his writing better.

Are there any suggestions out there that might help us out?

    Thank you

  7. My son is homeschooling for the first year. He was enrolled in a french immersion school for grades K-6. We decided to bring him home at school in order to allow him to work at his own pace. (He is gifted and easily bored/distracted if not challenged.)

We have been using MCT for grammar, etc. Although We have done some independent book studies (Animal Farm being a favourite) and are now on our second book in LL7. LL7 seems quite easy in its requirements with respect to writing and literary analysis so far (note we are not far into it yet). In looking at the Excellence in Literature website, it appears that they may be a little more challenging. Could anyone provide me with your thoughts on these two methods?

    Thank you

  8. Thinking of next year already....does anyone have suggestions as to which Science program to use for a grade 8 student who has completed the Singapore Interactive Science curriculum? (Secular suggestions would be appreciated).

Has anyone went on to use the secondary level Singapore Science books? If so, how did you/your children find them?

  9. Although we are Christian and attend the local baptist church, I am trying to remain secular in our learning at home. I would like to find curriculum which, although may make a few references to Christian views, is primarily secular in the lessons.

Thank you for the replies so far, I will definitely be looking into the suggestions.

  10. First posting from a long time lurker.

This is my first year homeschooling. I have a ds-12s(hs),ds-9(ps) and dd-14(ps) . The neighborhood ps is extremely overcrowded and after many years of frustration trying to get the acceleration required for my oldest, we gave up. Now, due to the same situation, we are considering bring home our ds-9.

I have been doing some research with regards to curriculum. I believe that I have math and science figured out. His brother is using Singapore for both of these subjects and my youngest did some Singapore Math over the summer.

My areas of concern are with respect to Language Arts and History. My oldest uses MCT(Town) for Language Arts and we are doing an independent study on a few books (Anne Frank, Animal Farm) before heading into LL7. My youngest has a great vocabulary and is a great reader (but still prefers to be read to). I could start him in MCT but I'm concerned about whether this may be too much/move to fast considering he hasn't had much teaching in the way of grammar at school (his ps is french immersion).

As far as the history goes, he is at the grade here (Ontario Canada) where he would be learning about Medieval Times. Is there any homeschool curriculum out there that I could use as a guide for this? I notice a few which appear to be aimed at higher grade levels but nothing for his level.

I would really appreciate any advice that you could give me. :001_smile:

Thank you all for the great resource you provide here on these boards!
