  1. My oldest ds14 used to have very bad pains just below his knees. He wouldn't always complain at night but I remember that sometimes he would be running around at the park and just kind of fall over and complain of pain. Some suggested shin splints but Xrays didn't show anything. He did outgrow the pain but it took a little while (he is now referred to as string bean since he is VERY tall :)).

  2. My ds14 has an interesting reaction to the dental instrument that polishes teeth. He gets very uncomfortable and says that it "messes with his brain". He says that the vibrations keep him from being able to focus. I told him perhaps he could just shut his eyes and relax but he says that he can't just not think. (I should mention that he is extremely bright and always thinking about something.) Has anyone heard of/had this type of reaction?

  3. Wow this thread is moving quickly! I grew up in Kingston Ontario (Eastern Ontario) and I can still not see how the way I say 'out' sounds like 'oat'.

I love Ottawa as we live on the outskirts and get to enjoy a large yard (at least by today's standards) but are an easy bus ride away from the Parliament Buildings, many museums, and skating on the canal. There are many biking and walking trail through green space and we really don't have a lot of crime to worry about.

  4. Hey you could move here to Ottawa. We are just across the river from Quebec so you can take a quick trip over to get some poutine. We also have very easy homeschooling laws here. Essentially I just tell the school board each year who I am homeschooling and that's it. The board has a liason who may call maybe once a year to just check in and ask how things are going and if there is anything they can do to help.

The other reasons that I like it here may be a little too political to bring up...

  5. You are doing all you can and have nothing to feel guilty about. I know this is easier said than done. I experienced similar to this with my dad who went into surgery lucid (cancer) and never recovered. We also went through ICU, ups and downs with medication causing hallucinations and then having a day perhaps where he was really 'there'. It is such a hard thing to go through and as a mom having to shield the kids from your own worry/pain.

Stay strong, take care of yourself and take comfort in your immediate family. :grouphug:

  6. We have been a little disappointed here with this season. We absolutely love Dr Who. We have all of the Eccleston and Tennant seasons on DVD and even did the Dr Who tour when we went to London last year. There just seems to be something off with this season. The Dr essentially killing one person (dinosaur show) and then almost killing another in this last episode (if it weren't for Amy). The Dr using a gun (we all yelled out....the Dr doesn't use guns!)...the humourous references to "adult-type" content. My dh is often complaining that the Dr is not really solving any of the problems. (I'm not sure if I agree with this one.) We loved the Ponds as well but we aren't really enjoying a whole season just dedicated to saying goodbye. Maybe we are just annoyed with the fact that there are only 5 episodes in a season that we waited so long for. Hopefully things will improve.

  7. We were also disappointed when Eccleston left but definitely give David Tennant a chance. He is such a great actor and his chemistry with Rose and fun times with Donna are not to be missed. He really grows on you. We were soooooo upset when he left. The scene where he transforms still brings tears to the eyes. I think he will always be our favourite Dr Who...mind you Matt Smith has been slowly growing on us as well :001_smile:

  8. I agree with the comment regarding the abstract nature of the books. To be honest, I'm not sure what I really think about it. My son enjoyed reading the grammar book and was able to retain many of the meanings in Caesar's English. I'm not sure how much retention there was of the grammar but we moved on to GWG. I think we are also a little more used to the textbook approach.

  9. I had this problem with both of my sons. I believe that it is important, as they head into the higher levels of math, that they get into the habit of writing things out. I let them know that once they hit University, the math they are doing is not just solving to get the right answer but doing proofs of mathematical principles. It may be a little different as I know that my kids are re-entering the public school system (high school) and that grades will be important. I let them know that sometimes part marks can be received for the wrong answer if the teachers sees that you were headed in the right direction. It is/was a struggle but hopefully it will help in the end.

  10. I just received my password etc and followed the instructions to create a student account for my son. He can now log in to his own account. I'm just starting to dig in to the Guides and Tutorials (off of the home page from teacher loging). I think that you can create assignments from the teacher login which then show up under the student account that they can finish and mark as done. (This seems to include tests). Anyway, as I said, I'm just digging into it now (definitely not intuitive) but maybe there would be something there to help you get what you want. I think I'm going to use their sample lesson assignments, at least for now.

  11. So for those who have purchased (and been able to log in) how did you do it? I have an email giving my username and password but I have no idea what to use as my State, District and School on the login screen. I have purchased through HSBC. I am attempting to find out from HMH as well but thought that I might get a quicker answer here.

  12. I'm looking for anyone who has had experience with either Novel-ties or L-I-T guides. I have decided that my ds11 and I will be working our way through The Chronicles of Narnia. I am looking for something that will work on vocab, provide insight into literary devices, and have some interesting discussion questions. I did notice that the L-I-T preview provided some historical context to the book which would be a bonus. We are a christian family but I am looking for a more secular approach.

Anyone have any insights into these guides?

  13. I'm sorry for you loss.

Your mom sounds like a great mother! The kids will probably deal with the loss in spurts. When my grandmother died, my young brother (very close to her) would go to his room every once in awhile and dig out pictures of her, old pets etc. I think it was just his way of dealing with it. Things will slowly get better. Take care of yourself and enjoy your kids.
