10 Good
  1. I selected Math, Language Arts, and Science and my husband would concur with those choices. My son always assumed he would become an engineer like his father so those choices made the most sense, but as a rising 10th grader he is just now thinking he might want to teach English! Looking back his favorite subjects have always been History and Language Arts! In reality the split was pretty even between Science and History.
  2. When my brother was in Junior High he decided he wanted to grow his hair a little longer. He had a crew cut at the time. My dad flipped out and they had a major row. I remember coming to my brother's defense. All he wanted was a normal haircut, not long hair. My brother was a good kid and in my opinion it should not have even been an issue. I decided right then and there that if the worse thing I ever had to deal with from a son was long hair I would have it made in the shade. Today I have a 15 year old son and you guessed it. He has long hair. I may prefer shorter hair, but he is a great kid who is in the process of becoming a very fine young man. The hair really isn't important.
  3. Yes, I actually did this quite a lot for awhile. Usually I like to cook from scratch. But, after we moved into a larger house to accommodate my dear Mother-in-Law, with her dog and cat, I found I was really struggling with our new routine. We already had my uncle living with us and some friends of ours needed to stay with us for an extended period of time at the same time. I felt like I was running a bed and breakfast. I was cooking three hot meals a day and in no time flat had become the master of what I called the 30 minute dinner. I relied a lot on convience foods. I cringe to think what our food budget was back in those days.
  4. I agree with stripe. I once bought some books that were shipped to me media mail. I'm pretty patient, but was starting to wonder where on earth those books were. My husband found the package in his office! Apparently my dear Mother-in-Law answered the door and decided that was where the package belonged. She had Alzheimer's and my husband isn't the most observant person on the block. I have no idea how long those books were in his office.
  5. I would try changing his food. We just started our girl on California Naturals and everyone here is a whole lot happier. No more crying! Ours has food allergies and recently went on strike over her usual kibble. I was ready to pull my hair out. She can't eat fish or beef and even some foods without these ingredients give her terrible diarrhea. The poor baby was not happy. Even when her digestive system wasn't obviously upset she was crying a lot. Needless to say I am sold on California Naturals.
  6. Rats make great pets! They are very social, enjoy attention, have unique personalities, and are rather smart. They learn to beg very quickly. Which I think is adorable. If you only get one, it is essential that you keep your pet where he will receive a lot of attention. Not in a bedroom or some other remote area of the house. When our last rat passed away we knew we would shortly be inheriting a new dog and cat along with my dear Mother-in-law, so we opted not get another one. Truth is, I miss the little guys. They really do make great pets.
  7. When my husband was selling a bike through CL someone attempted to scam us this way. Upon doing some research we discovered that the banks initially "clear" the check. It isn't until some time later that they figure out that the check is fraudulent. Any attempt to trace the individuals involved is usually fruitless.
  8. My son, who is 15, just finished Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and is now reading the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand http://www.pagebypagebooks.com/Ayn_Rand/Anthem/index.html
  9. We are using LOF alone and I feel confident that it is enough for my son. He is doing Beginning Algebra and I find that he is able to transfer his math knowledge to his science with confidence and ease. He enjoys word problems and I am very impressed and pleased with his grasp of the material. He has also finally developed some real determination with his problem solving skills. Might partly be an age thing but I am sure that LOF has helped. However, I do believe that LOF is a particularly good match for his learning style and would not necessarily be the best fit for some learners. Considering the agony we have had over math in the past I am very grateful for LOF at this point in time!
  10. Would Help For High School be doable without Bravewriter for a ninth grader? Would we be missing too much of the program and her philosophy? Thanks!
  11. We're on time! Hip Hip Hooray! We've had so much of "life happening" the last five years that this feels amazing. Admittedly, I did not schedule out a heavy load. My D MIL passed away 1 week before school started and no one in the house wanted to start school, particularly me. All the same, I am pleased with where we are at.
  12. I was going to recommend Lyrical Learning CD s, but then I noticed the ages of your children. They really are intended for an older audience. You can hear some audio samples on http://www.christianbook.com/lyrical-life-science-1-with/9780974163543/pd/59775?item_code=WW&netp_id=243202&event=ESRCN&view=details I suppose you could just listen to the CD s for a few years and then use the texts if you wanted later. I hope to try one or two of these next semester so I can't give you a personal review. There is a company called Sing 'n Learn you could check out. Here is the link to their website. http://www.singnlearn.com/ They have quite a few audio CD s including Rock 'n Learn, Lyrical Science, and Twin Sisters recordings. Hope this helps.
