  1. What do you prefer, the Tales of the Kingdom books by Lamplighter or Kingdom Tales by MFW? I believe it is the same, except MFW added discussion questions and has no illustrations. I have the first book from Lamplighter and was wondering if it is worth it to buy Kingdom Tales from MFW. ~needmoregrace
  2. Thank you for your input. I appreciate any suggestions! I am waiting for the AHL TM to arrive. The great thing is I am not using it until the fall, so I have plenty of time to look through it and pray about it. I'd be happy to be able to save the money the class runs me! ~needmoregrace
  3. Julie, since you are using this now, I have a question for you. My daughter is going to use MFW AHL next year. She is currently in a writing class that is based on IEW. Next year the writing class is on Essays. Would it be too much to do the MFW and the writing class, or even necessary to do the class? ~NMG
  4. Thank you! You are really helping me out! I might look into getting an older version if and see if we use it, if I can find a great deal! I am so glad I posted about this! I already have plenty of things that I didn't really use after all. I don't need to spend $40 and not use it! My local county library is being taken over by our city. No one is sure how it is going to work out. It has been good up until now. ~nmg
  5. I am planning on using MFW ECC with my 10,9, and 7 year olds. They are not accelerated learners, by any means.:) I've actually been pretty easy on them academically. I am wondering if I should buy the World Book Encyclopedia CD-Rom when I place my order with MFW. This will be our first year with MFW. My oldest will do AHL in the fall, so maybe she would sometimes use it too? My real question is would it benefit my 5th and 4th graders to have the WB encyclopedia. I don't want to waste $40 if we really don't need it. I can buy it later (when it will be current) for them as they are older. Any suggestions??? For those who have MFW experience, what do you think?? Thank you! ~NMG
  6. I switched to TT last year. I agree with the other posts. Mostly, my ds (used TT4, now TT5) doesn't give me any attitude about doing math. He enjoys doing it with TT. My dd13 is in TT Algebra this year and is doing great. My dd10 liked TT, but I moved her to MUS this year because of some ld issues. She did well on TT, but I think MUS is best for her. My friends who have switched to TT have gone from tears of frustration with their kids at math time, to more peace in their day. Can't say enough about how much it has helped our schedules!! ~needmoregrace
  7. Three of my four children were adopted from Russia. Nine years ago, our oldest was almost five when we brought home our two babies who were 20months and 9 months old. Four years later, God led us to our youngest who had just turned three at the time. We used EAC and they were fabulous! I used to go speak at seminars in CA when the kids were little to share our story. When we went through our first adoption journey, my husband and I did not know anyone who had adopted. Now we know many families. Some have bio and adopted, and some have only adopted. My homeschooling girlfriend adopted her two boys from Korea as babies. They are now 13 and 11. I know people who have adopted from private domestic, foster adopt, Russia :), Korea, China, Uganda, Guatemala, Liberia, and Swaiziland. Countries that don't have a strong adoption program seem to take longer. I always hear stories that someone knows someone who adopted then had a biological child, but I can't say I have any friends who have. Personally, I think it is wise when people adopt and keep the birth order in the home. What I mean is if you have a child (bio or adopted, no different to me) and you adopt another child, adopt a younger child. I am sure some families have done it differently and it has been wonderful, but those I know who have adopted children older than the child in the home had problems. Children are a blessing, no matter how they come to you. I love each of my kids and I don't think of any of them as adopted. It is just the way God made our family. I only use the terms biological and adopted for this very purpose, to give information to people who are interested in adopting. It is important to find a good agency, no matter if you go domestic or foreign. You want someone to walk you through it. Check around, just like you are doing. That is how I found EAC. They kept coming up on boards, then I checked out their site. They are based in Ohio, but have families from every state. When I looked them up, they were having a free seminar 20 minutes from my house within two weeks. They had a list of over 100 families as references and I called at least 10 of them from random parts of the country. You probably are not ready to look at agencies now, but remember to research and find a good one! It makes all the difference. We had tried domestic and got burned by an adoption facilitator going bankrupt on us not long after we signed up with her. I have had many families tell me at seminars of their heartaches with bad agencies. At the time of both of our adoptions, we were told to expect at least a year, and we were home with them in 5 months!! Things are always changing in adoption laws with each country. I just looked at amazon and I am not familiar with most of the books listed. I did read Toddler Adoption and some Russian Adoption Handbook. I read others and I will try to remember them. I did read Raising Adopted Children and did not like it at all. What an exciting time for you and your husband! I hope this was helpful. Blessings to you! ~needmoregrace
  8. I would suggest asking the MFW forum on their website or emailing them. I am getting ready to start MFW with my kids. They are 13,10,9, and 7 (but my ds7 is really like he is 5) If your 4th grader is very independent, it might be okay. I don't think it would have worked in my home. My oldest is very independent now, but four years ago she needed me more. Next year she will be in high school, so she will be MFW AHL and I will be doing ECC with the other three. I hope you hear from others who have experience with MFW. ~needmoregrace
  9. I have heard great things about IEW, but I have not used it myself. I plan on using it next year with two of my children. This year I put my ds13 in a homeschool writing class. The teacher bases her classes somewhat on IEW. Many families I know have their children in writing classes. You might want to look into the homeschooling groups in your area and find a class. Hope this helps! ~needmoregrace
  10. Wow! Thanks so much! Spending $10 for all my kids sounds good. It seems like a low risk investment for that price. Thanks for your help!
  11. Welcome to CA! I am in northern LA County. I would recommend contacting HSLDA and you will probably be reassured that you can wait until Oct. I am with a PSP, but many friends file their own affidavit. I am thinking about it, but my oldest likes the activities we do with the PSP school. You could also contact CHEA of CA. I have been homeschooling in CA for 8 years. ~needmoregrace
  12. Thank you! Buying the set from IEW includes a 100 page teacher packet. I didn't know if I needed that. Thanks!
  13. I am planning on using IEW SWI A with my kids next year. I am trying to figure out if I can buy the teacher notes from IEW separately from the package. My friend bought the DVDs and I was going to buy the student books. I can't find anywhere on the IEW site that you can buy the teacher packet alone. Maybe I am missing it. Does anyone know? Thank you!
