  1. I think I was half asleep while typing. I barely understood what I wrote. One thing to clarify. The 1098-T will not have info about the textbook costs. You'll have to dig that up yourself what was paid. But if I recall correctly, those costs are part of what can be used in the education tax credits if eligible for it. Here's stuff from IRS https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/aotc but that explains why we use tax act instead of figuring out ourselves. i have no idea on 529 stuff. i barely have idea of other stuff. but I know we needed that 1098-T from the school.
  2. I'm not a tax expert so this isn't really advice about how to file. I like using tax software (specifically we've used tax act if you need one to look up if you like it) because the software walks you through that stuff with little pop up answers along the way. I think the cost on it was around 25 dollars (federal, we don't have a state income tax). certainly worth the cost for our simple taxes over paying a preparing. there are other software out there. I think one of the forms you will want to have is something called the 1098-T issued from the university. It will have some of the information for some of the tuition and scholarship stuff for something called AOTC credit. and also stuff like textbooks costs.... again the software walks us through that and how we claimed it but student did not since our student was dependent. various questions and check boxes were involved on that and had questions on the 529 stuff too.
  3. I used Saxon with an advanced, and then a "slow to average" student and we didn't do every.single.problem. shocking I know. right? (we used lesson plans from MFW to know which problems to do.) So, I changed how I used Saxon. keep reading.... hold on.. BUT I think it's fine to change to MUS (or TT, or something else) and think you're doing a good thing to know when it's the wrong item and when to try with something else. I've known people who used MUS to get as far as they could by end of grade 12 and had enough math to pass college math for liberal arts majors (either as a class or a credit by exam option). Usually most majors require something. but not always pre-cal or calc. Not all high school students have to do 4 years either. I was just reading graduation requirements for a very prestigious private school in St Louis, and they apparently offer through all the AP Calculus but only require 2 credits in math (while encouraging students to try to get through Alg 2 if they are able and interested). They require more PE and Fine Arts than math for everyone. (seriously: 4 years of fine arts (1 of which should be "practical arts") and 4 years of PE/sports). But even there with all of their national merit students, they have some who are non as mathy and they personalize for them too. Not everyone will be National Merit even if they go there. btw,it's $31,000 tuition for that place where my dh's cousin works in the math department. (which is why I was looking. I wanted to know what cousin does.. hadn't talked in person in long time). anyway... doesn't matter. Just saying, take the time to individualize. and this is a high school where everyone goes to college. kwim? I've known one person on this forum who had a math ability student who used MUS the whole time and was calculus ready in college. Others say not enough. I just wanted to encourage you to go ahead with your plan to change. Saxon ain't right for all. And some think it's nothing they want. be encouraged.
  4. giggle. I just watched that clip on youtube and chuckling right along with you. It was just handled like the absurd moment it was. The audience reaction is laughter. The band strikes up a tune while everyone is laughing. ah, nothing like laughter to diffuse the weirdness. yep. The full quote was: "Well Ladies and Gentlemen. That was bound to happen." the audience laughs, and settles down and then Niven continued "Isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?" now, do I find the Ray Stevens song (the Streak) for another laugh this very cold morning. LOL.
  5. I'm old with you. Not impressed to see that as email for ad. I remember a time about a decade ago now when my oldest was in high school. one of the church youth leaders was posting something on the group facebook. she (the leader person) was expressing surprise or other emotion with her post that included WTF. If there was a way to say silence filled the cyber air, well, silence filled the cyber air. The leader honestly did not know what that meant. ha ha ha. Being the polite person to help out I posted "I think in context she has to mean Watch The Forecast. you know, it might rain and we have to cancel. " It all got deleted and we all laughed at how the leader truly did not know. bless her heart.
  6. Welcome along. My oldest and middle used MFW back in the day. Both have graduated college now. And my youngest was special ed track so she didn't use MFW. I'm not really sure what kind of feedback or questions you'd like to have. Or which year/grade you're looking at. It's been a while since I was in the details of day to day using it. But with a looking back point of view, homeschooling works. I found the materials easy to implement and I liked that my children were able to "follow the syllabus". I'd expect to set up "office hours" each day to work with them after they had finished their part. The lesson planner suggests a once a week longer meeting for parents to go over stuff and have time with student. But it worked a lot better for me to do smaller amounts each day with them. The price these days seems high to me. but I guess everything is more expensive and it does cover lesson plans and books for more than one subject. I liked the all in one approach. I guess it's like the Home Depot with a twist: less shopping more doing. I liked most of their selections - but not all. I chose not to change it up though and just went with it. Plenty of school work but still enough time to have a life. Oldest is super genius academic person (she graduated college with 3 STEM degrees in 4 years) so mfw didn't hold her back. She could do a full day's worth of high school in short amount of time. And then she was over involved in other stuff. Middle is "slow to average" academics (she has some learning disabilities) and it was good for her. Went a non traditional approach to getting a bachelors and did fine. She's take the full 6 hours of school a day to get through 6-7 subjects. (that includes math, science, etc) the mfw part wasn't 6 hours. Long ago a friend of mine was first year to homeschooling. pulled his son from public school in middle of 10th grade when dad had a job change and they found mfw easy to start as newbies. but the son was good academics too. another engineering person. LOL Again, I'm not sure what kind of feedback you'd like. And if there's not a lot of chatter on this subforum, maybe some of the older posts some of us wrote back in the are over on the high school subforum too. Search engine over here isn't always perfect. edit to add: I know nothing about this new mfw high school partnership with " Unbound mentorship" with the group formerly called College Plus. I personally would avoid that option based on the little I know about college plus/lumerit/unbound, or whatever it called these days. One does not have to use that service to use mfw high school. moving on. hope the OP finds the right materials for her family's needs. mileage will vary. others like what I don't. i like what I like. yep. ok.
  7. Katie gave you some info above. but it got tagged with my post instead your post by mistake (it happens no big deal) . just wanted to make sure you see her reply.
  8. just finishing about 4th month. The best thing? My dh has joined too. He's about 13 weeks into it. Haven't done much with the food side yet. Been focused on flexibility stuff. He was never into fitness stuff with me. But now? I think he wants a red head band like Garrett. We're still in the getting there stages. I can't believe he asks if it's a ddpy day when he gets home. @ktgrok I know you're used to the more advanced stuff. But would it help to do the chair versions for a while until toe and wrist heal up? There's has to be a modification for broken table, right? Just pretend you're auditioning to be in the next chair videos or something. 🙂 make the work out your own! ((hugs)) hope you can rejoin soon.
  9. Congratulations! that is exciting to see. I don't chime in on forums all that much these days now that I've graduated youngest from high school. But this thread tugged on my heart. Wanted to share my youngest dd’s school success. Autism with lower IQ, and major speech/communication impairments. Not much anxiety and probably not add issues but not sure on that. I think the inability to stay focused is more of language delayed and interest. Finished high school in 2020. year later was able to obtain certificate in computer software specialist. This is a technical certificate at community college for Word, Power Point, Excel, “typing speed”. Course materials were on her level and accessed asynchronously. The texts were online texts from pearson brand and she could listen while the computer read and highlighted the section. So that helped her staying on track. Due to the nature of the courses, students had three tries on each assignment to get 100% so she'd redo stuff and fix those errors in documents. She’s involved in a music ensemble in the community. She still volunteers in church kitchen ministry. Oh, and then I found out a way she can turn that certificate into an associates of applied science at another state’s trade college system with some courses she did via the Sophia llc platform and something called CSM Learn for her math requirement. Never in my mind was that on the table until last year. Not quite finished with that, but this spring/summer. If someone had told me 10 years ago, I would have not been able to believe it. definitely non traditional routes to credentials for achievement in learning. Middle gal: learning differences included auditory processing, add, impairments in speaking, anxiety with that. IQ (either higher side of low, or lower side of average depending on testing). Finished high school in 2017. College success: after high school, she studied and passed CLEP exams, took 8 community colleges at either 1 or 2 courses per term. Did a bunch of ACE CREDIT alternative course providers for college credit, and 2 courses at Thomas Edison Statue to earn a bachelors (and within 4 years of high school). How did that work???? And with pay as you go? No debt? What??? Well, I acted as academic advisor to help her know that path existed and how to navigate. For her college courses, she had access to online audio versions for help to stay focused while reading long chapters. Pearson brand and sometimes from something called VitalSource. Slow and steady accomplished major academic goal for her. Planning to do what she likes in life at animal shelters. Both of them struggled heavily. We had outside therapies. Tutors for writing and other stuff. College was not full time. Nor on campus really. I think they’ve learned stuff along the way and it wasn’t totally check box credentials. Oh and middle gal got her driver’s license around age 21. A local driving school had a class for “our kids” with autism/adhd. Worth the mega bucks. and everyone sees them still living at home with us for next 5-10 years at least. That's ok. they do chores too. It's just how life turned out. Like blessedmom3 said, this schooling with our different kids will involve a lot of tears, but do keep on keeping on. Might not be done at 18. I never found a miracle curriculum. I used what I liked and what looked good enough and just kept at it. Changed when needed. Taught the way they needed. ps: if none of the college had happened, that would have been success too. individualized results meant giving what an individual needed and would grow
  10. giggle.. "don’t have a NMR mass spectrometer in my homeschool science supplies. " giggle. LOL anyway, short of your dad going to my dh's office, I can't help on that. I mean you know we just downsized all of the analytical chemistry equipment in the last year after return to office for work. (giggle. LOL) but in seriousness, check PM for meal pick up idea. don't have to go inside or have contact at pick up.
  11. If place doesn't file insurance directly, ask for detailed receipt in case you want to file directly with insurance for any reimbursement.
  12. When one of my dd had speech class with persuasive, I suggested a topic ( with specific action to benefit a well known children's cancer research hospital in our city) and her response was "everyone knows about that". But turns out the audience she was speaking to did not know the specific action was a need and an option to help the patient's and families. Maybe this is same kind of thing: what's familiar and known to me isn't always as well known to everyone as I think it is. depending what it is she wants to persuade the audience about may be well known or not. In my dd's class, the assignment was clear that it was a persuasive speech to encourage audience to take a specific action. Having some familiarity with the topic was a big help to connect with the audience. But it didn't mean all things and actions were known.
  13. and to think I was just in the area last week but missed this house. oh wait, that's a good thing
  14. seconding this. it was quite helpful in my family for funerals
  15. I was hopeful of that same idea that youngest would be much much much older when he gets out (say 20). related to amount of time and age of the children.... One thing in the back of my mind in how it will all play out is if any of his children are still homeschool age when he's out. There's laws in Arkansas about S offenders can't be in the household if you homeschool unless given a waiver (or something like that. I'm not sure the exact wording). guess we'll find out in many years and counting
  16. dress in Santa hat with a covid mask on your face? and then slip the envelope by the door?
  17. I don't know for certain. But if either is a potential witness to be called, then it's common where I have lived that they would not be present until called. example: One case where I was in jury pool, the defendant's probation officer showed up to watch the trial. Judge looked at probation officer and said "hey, did you know you're potential witness in the case?" " no judge I didn't know that. I'm leaving." turns out that person was not actually called to the stand, but he could not hear other testimony just in case. Perhaps that works like that in federal court too. or maybe it's other reasons. so yeah, I'm guessing JB's lawyer said don't show up and of course M wouldn't go if JB said no. It could be other reasons involved.
  18. Juries where I was in the pool, that kind of thinning questionnaire was not done until we were in courtroom to be questioned (voir dire) They didn't know which case you'd be on until it happened. Judge asked us all at once to raise hands if we knew anyone on the list that was called. We weren't on a specific case for most of the time but in a big waiting room. when case was needing jury, that's when thinning happened.
  19. It was started in January 2020. so almost two years... but it all blends together. close enough. right? in other conversation... originally plans for supper involved outdoor grilling. but the rain didn't stop. so we don't know yet. tomato soup and grilled cheese sounds good tonight.
  20. Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but in the "bonus downloads" section for each history (american, world) there is a Grading Chart to get an idea for example in World History https://notgrasshistory.com/pages/exploring-world-history/ there are some ideas in the bonus download such as a Grading Chart https://notgrass.com/content/exploring_world_history_grading_chart.pdf and an answer key that has some grading ideas. And somewhere on there was something with ideas about writing assignments if that's more of what you meant. and if you meant American instead of World try here for same kinds of things https://notgrasshistory.com/pages/exploring-america/ When I used Notgrass as part of our World History course, I gave a history grade based on daily "review questions", quizzes and tests. I added in a map project and timeline project for the history part. but that was with an edition of text before the current one.
  21. seconding the check the monogram/initials. and if humor is needed for that https://www.southernthing.com/what-if-bad-monograms-had-support-groups-2588414736.html sorry, nothing productive to add with a good middle name, but thought the laugh could be fun. I like the sound of his choice of middle name even if it came from a show he's watching.
  22. I've used this list for my "zones" https://www.addsaltandserve.com/daily-reminder-task-list/ had seasons where I did 1 zone a week, and some seasons with 1 zone a day. made each zone on that list with tasks into a one page printed sheet and put it in plastic cover near the area.
  23. did y'all just see that Jim Bob is running for a vacated senate seat in Arkansas? announced today
