  1. I agree that a due date would be good to know. :)

Could we knit/ crochet up a 10 x 10 block to send or would that throw everything off?

No, I'm so sorry--I don't think you can combine knitting & cotton patchwork quilt stuff. I think it would pull apart.

  2. Rosie, thank you for putting up with our expressions of love. It means SO much to me to have *anything* I can do, & I hope that way over here, it won't be bothering you too much for a while at least.

Due date, ladies: what? You aren't finished already? The mail's already gone today (here)! LOL I really don't know. I'd *love* to have everything in a week or two, but longer is okay, too. Would it be helpful if we set a date & then move it? :D June 1?

There are some beautiful quilts on the link shared above, but I think I'll be lucky to make one that is reminiscent of this: http://funhandprintartblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/PHOTO_7723658_122717_11012377_ap_420X315.jpg

  3. First--um. Duh. This was not very subtle. Sorry, Rosie. Do what 7yo does when I accidentally forget to hide her gifts: pretend you didn't see this. She's gotten quite good at that over the years, poor thing.

Second--hemmed? *scratches head* I've never heard of hemming squares first. That's probably the thing to do, of course, but I've never done it that way. Shall I tell you what my grandmother said when I gave her a quilt? Well, it was kind, but I was very suspicious. ;) So let's say, don't hem them. Just send a raw 10" square with your hand slapped on there some way or other. I had good luck painting the kids' hands for a handprint t-shirt for dh. Mostly good luck...

  4. Hi, guys. I'd like to make a small quilt for Rosie. It will probably be ugly & badly sewn, because that's how my sewing skills go, but I know she & I had so much fun doing that for Scarlett--she in particular seemed to enjoy poking fun at my idea of "sewing"--that I'd like to do it for her, too.

I'd like for those who'd like to participate to trace their hands on one fabric & then stitch that to a 10" x 10" block of another fabric, to be like a virtual hug. Put your name on it with sharpie marker or embroidery.

Lara in Colo will be collecting these, so if you're interested, you can pm her.

    Thanks.

  5. Short version: What do you think about doing Alg/Geom together over 2 years?j

Background: Last year, we did about 3 mos of NEM 1 before trying Saxon Alg (it was free) & finally finding Jacob's Alg around Christmas time. We spent a month or so skipping around (because we'd done so much in other books), found our place/rhythm by mid Feb & ds took the midterm last month. Considering we started the book so late, I'm totally happy with only being 1/2 way through, but I'm trying to plan next year...

I think I should just let him work & if I need to order Geom before the year is up, GREAT! If not, fine.

But I can't leave it alone, so...WHAT IF I order Geom now & have him work through that as he finishes Alg? Maybe 2 days of one, 2 days the other? I *expect* Geom to be easier for him--he wants to be an engineer. But he's very mathy, decent (ish--he's still a not-fully-grown boy, after all) about getting it done, etc.

    *big ears*

  6. So we were selling our house & expecting #3. She was born in the wee hours of the morning, & when we got home later in the AM (birth center), I called & left a message for our realtor that we wouldn't be having any showings for a few days, then went to bed w/ new baby.

The first day or two w/ a new baby, I tend to sleep topless--it's just easier that way. Or I did when I only had 1-3, & wasn't expecting anyone in my room...

The realtor did not get the message. When I got up, there were various subtle indications that someone might possibly have been in the house. So I checked online, & sure enough--we'd had a "showing" that morning. o.O

ETA: I should mention--I'm one of those women who covers up w/ a HUGE blanket, even at home, went to another room/the bathroom w/ #1, etc. I don't even talk about booKshelves in mixed company. :p

  7. The lessons seem to get *significantly* longer the further in the book I look. I know there are some older threads about this--discussing how long ea lesson takes--but I'm wondering, if you've got a set amt of time blocked out, have you planned lessons around the "steps" for ea day instead of ea day?

For ex, somewhere around Week 22, students are supposed to do a 4 part read, think, write, lit language sequence. The "thinking" exercises sometimes look like 2 days' worth of work to me, but the "writing" exercises? *faint*

I'm imagining Step 1: Write the summary to take about 30 min, Step 2: Write the analysis to take another 30-60 min, & then Step 3: Assemble the essay--???? To do a *good* job on it, I can't imagine less than 30 min. And since I tend to expect my kids to work faster than reality dictates, I should probably double those estimates. So "Day Three" of that week looks like THREE DAYS to me.

I really just want to know if you agree w/ that estimate & if you dealt w/ it by scheduling it that way or something else. :)

Day 4 of that week deals w/ synecdoche: understand it, define it, identify it. Again...to do a *good* job, I imagine each of those steps taking close to 30 min...maybe only an hour for all 3 steps...yes? No? Thanks!

  8. I've got WWE on one side of me & PLL on the other. I just realized PLL is supposed to be for 2nd/3rd. I'm terrible at getting the right level for the right kid--I'm one who thought using old college textbooks for 1st graders would be a great way to save $, lol, so--help. Should I use both of these this year? Just one? Is PLL too much for 1st grade, or does it really matter?

  9. Oh my gosh. You're trying to re-traumatize me. This is almost as bad as Lara threatening to come over & dig ours up in the middle of the night, lol!

Dh says it becomes obvious--bulging eyes & such. I never saw that happen (thank goodness). But he also agreed that the next pet we'd get...if ever...would be *anything* that's OBVIOUSLY alive-or-dead.

We got another turtle. (Someone needed to re-home theirs.)

Fwiw, a floppy head would freak me out. I think if they're hibernating, parts should all be pulled inside. But I'll see if dh knows...(for what THAT is worth--he IS the guy who called & said, HEY! Go dig up the possibly-un-dead turtle...)

  10. Thanks for the suggestion! I didn't know Drew had come out w/ a Latin program. :) Ok, so dd & I looked at it, &...she had her face all scrunched up. It looks pretty teacher-intensive, & it's the kind of thing that would make me *crazy.* (Too *happy.*) LOL

But for some reason, ds pulled out LP & showed it to her, & she loves it. ????????? I was thinking she was too young for it, but she's 10, so...maybe not? I don't know, but we've already got it, so there's nothing lost to try it, & *I* love it, so that helps, lol.

  11. I have a kid who's in tears at *the thought* of Latin in the fall. She did Song School Latin a couple of years ago & didn't hate it but didn't learn a lot either. Year before last, we did Latin for Children, & we both hated it. Honestly...it was so full of errors, I finally just closed it up & figured we'd try again another year. Last year, no Latin.

So this year, I decided we should all do the same program. (Oldest has done Lively Latin & Latin Prep; I LOVE LP, but #2 isn't old enough for it yet. LL was fine, but *I* got tired of it & sold it. All that printing!!) Anyway, I was thinking MP for everybody. I have Prima Latina for my littles, was going to order First Form for #2, & then the oldest would do Henle (or maybe a combo of LP & Henle, since LP is awesome).

But when #2 heard the news, she freaked. I tried to reassure her w/ samples of FF online, but they look too much like LfC. (Really--they look frighteningly similar, but I think MP has been around a lot longer...?) So now I'm second-guessing. I haven't ordered her stuff yet, so it's not a huge deal to do something different. She struggles w/ the *logic* of language, so Latin is esp hard for her, but she has a knack for...learning languages orally, maybe? More of a social creature, if that makes sense. And I can ONLY understand languages grammatically, so...I may not be the best-suited teacher for her, lol.

Anyway, years ago in seminary, she was able to play w/ & communicate w/ *everybody* where the language barrier was a problem for most of the other kids. Last year, we did Rosetta Stone Spanish, & she did GREAT. (Computer problems inhibited the completion of that, sadly.)

So based on all of that...what should I do about Latin for a kid who's in TEARS over the thought of it? (Darn, LfC!!!)
