Is there actually a cough medicine that works??
jcgonczi replied to cakemom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Buckley's and it really does taste terrible. You have to feel BAD to take it. -
I haven't been here in a while and love the new look! My desperation has brought me back to this board looking for help. How do you organize all of your resources, curriculum options, websites, etc.? I am NOT an organized person and I am drowning. I have so many different types of things I want to keep up with and I can't figure out how to do it. Things I am talking about include traditional printed curriculum, workbooks, books, papers, websites, curriculum options that I want to possibly use in the future, on-line articles, etc. I've got a gazillion things bookmarked on my computer, as well as pinned on pinterest. It's just all over the place! Help!

My 10yo / 5th grade daughter has to make a board game about the civil war. The requirements are 1) must have a game board 2) playing pieces 3) minimum 25 trivia questions 4) typed directions. It can be totally made up or based on an existing game. Problem is all of my daughter's ideas are just crazy, convoluted, pieces of different games that don't make sense together. And she has shot down all of my ideas. So...does anyone have any ideas I can run by her?

What are you giving your DH for Christmas?

I am thinking about a closet valet for my husband. I'm not even sure if that is what its called. One of those wooden racks you hand barely worn nicer clothes to air and not wrinkle. -
This sounds exactly like the postpartum depression I had. Add all of the stress you are under and I can't imagine how you must feel. And yes - postpartum depression can last 19 months plus. I also understand not wanting to take the meds because of the stigma, even if it was self imposed. All I can tell you is that Prozac changed my life for the good. Heck, it probably even saved my life. And it definitely makes me a better person and mother. Over the last 10 years I have gone off it several times and have always regretted it. So I guess what I am trying to say is don't be too hard on yourself and do what you have to do to get better. If that means meds, so be it. You and your children deserve better.

I just read the current thread on how to keep up with books you own or want to read. It was very interesting to me that others needed help with this because my husband is currently writing an iphone app for me to do this. I want something portable (i.e. on my phone), sortable, easy to edit, etc. This tread got me thinking - what do you want in such an organizer? What features should I have my husband include or exclude? My husband is already writing this for me. However, just so there is no misunderstanding, I want to state that there is a possibility that he may sell the app if it turns out good enough. He already has several app for sell on itunes.

I don't mean to sound harsh or uncaring, but who is the parent here? It sounds like your son is doing whatever he wants. That means he is in charge. That has to change. I have insomnia and I totally get it. If I could be productive during non-sleeping hours, I could conquer the world. If your son has a medical need to eat that often, then let him eat. If you truly think it is a phase due to a growth spurt, let him eat whenever he wants for now. To me your schedule doesn't need tweaking - it needs an overhaul. Get up and take a shower - I just don't get how this takes an hour. You need to pare this down some. (I am a girly girl and do make-up, hair, etc. every day and it only takes me 30- 45 minutes.) Breakfast – Unless there is a medical issue that warrants him taking so long to eat, I agree with the previous posters on setting a timer. He is controlling you. Clean-up – Again I just don't get how this can take an hour to an hour and a half. Deep cleaning, sure. Daily washing one meal's worth of dishes, wiping table and counters should not take that long. Is there something I'm not getting here? Snacks – Let him snack while doing school work. Thats what kids do in public school here, as well as in my kid's hybrid school. If he is truly hungry he will be able to multi-task on this one. Also, can he eat snacks before and after sports while you are in the car? Once you get where you are going, snack time is over. Sports – I have no problem with daytime sports IF they can be made to work with school work. If not your son needs to start learning that actions have consequences. One of the consequences of not doing you school work is no sports that day. If he ends up having to quit, so be it. Hiding in the bathroom – This one really got me. He is 6, right? He can only hide in the bathroom and read if you let him. Will he scream and fuss and complain when you don't allow it? Absolutely. It sucks, but that is what being a parent involves sometimes. Waiting on him to finish – If you keep him with you he will not be able to sneak away and read, etc. Other than meals (not snacks) and reasonable bathroom breaks his hinnie needs to be right next to you doing homework. Once he matures some and can be trusted to do his homework on his own, then great. He doesn't have to have spend every single moment with you anymore. This is hard on both of you, but again this is what parenting is about sometimes. (BTW – a great book on this subject is Raising Godly Tomatoes.) Begging him to eat – Um, no. If he is hungry he can eat during eating time. I certainly would not be begging my child to eat cheesecake. Again, I don't mean to sound harsh, but I don't see any parenting going on here. What I see his you catering to your son and trying to make him happy all of the time.

jcgonczi replied to Oakblossoms's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Anything I buy that I have a specific purpose for and don't want anyone to eat I put in a special bin that is labeled "DO NOT EAT". Then I put the bin on as high of a shelf as possible to keep it out of easy eyesight. :001_smile:- 105 replies

My daughter is very visual and needs to see how everything relates in a graph / flow chart. Is there such a thing for grammar? Not just a list of the parts of speech, but a relatively detailed chart that shows all of the different types of nouns, verbs, etc. It would be great to have something that shows how all of the parts relate to each other. Thanks!

My 10yo daughter is completely mystified by basic grammar. Otherwise she is doing great - even in writing. So I am looking for a grammar only program. I want one that focuses only on grammar - not writing. I have researched until my eyes have rolled into the back of my head!! I have narrowed it down to four that I think look good, but can't decide. The four are: The Sentence Family Shurley Grammar Winston Grammar Grammar Made Easy Help me, please! I would love any advise, input, suggestions. THANKS!

Why do people clamor for a new iphone?
jcgonczi replied to Ginevra's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My husband is a computer engineer and LOVES everything Apple. We have two new iphones on their way to us. The best way I can explain it is that electronic gadgets are to techies like curriculum is to homeschool teachers. Hope that helps. :001_smile: -
My kids love Gnomeo and Juliet. Actually just watched it today and it was funny. My husband and I love Shakespeare In Love, but it may be too mature. There is definite love / sex themes.
