  1. This looks like a yummy recipe -- I'm going to try it! In this instance, I would purchase a good GF flour. I prefer Bob's. I tend to use a lot of corn flour for general purpose (e.g., frying) because it is so very inexpensive in our area. But for this recipe, I'd probably go with Bob's.
  2. I am prone to motion sickness. I was a serious SCUBA diver, but mommy duties have put a hold on my hobby. When I was diving I LOVED Bonine. It made an enormous difference on many dive holidays. Now, I am occasionally on boats/ferries, and Bonine isn't sold here; I'm stuck with Dramamine. For me, the trick with Dramamine is moderate eating beforehand (i.e., small, non-greasy meals that day) and to take the pill about an hour before departure. I have found that if I don't do these two things, the next four+ hours (on/off sea) tend to be unpleasant. Like Stacia, smells are a trigger for me. I haven't any luck with sea bands.
  3. Unless it is a holiday, we almost always grill. I try to prepare as many sides as possible in advance. I also tend toward simple desserts. One thing that helps me is to have some type of appetizer and beverages ready to be served to guests as soon as they arrive. After the guests have drinks and apps, then I can finish the last- minute preps and take everything out to the grill. The husband is more entertaining than I am anyway!
  4. I live in Mexico; people ask me all the time. If it is a question they are asking and they aren't obviously interested (e.g., a waiter treading water at a job), then I'll say the US. If the person seems sincerely interested, then I either reply with the state of my birth or the US. If I say, "the US," and if that person is interested, then they will always follow up with, "What state?"
  5. No, no, no..... Why do you think an RV would make things easier?
  6. Another mom has been sending me the important Whats app messages -- there were a number this past week. The WhatsApp is extremely popular here, and part of me wonders if the studio is using it to placate some parents. I am also concerned that it may be an excuse not to plan ahead. I didn't know if this type of communication was unusual or not, so I thought I would ask. We have been very happy at the studio, so I will definitely speak to the director. Thanks, everyone!
  7. Did you use it for ID somewhere, then leave it in the purse, luggage or plastic envelope thingie? Is it in your file cabinet or on top of the recipe books in the kitchen?
  8. My thinking is along the line with Ellie's. Poppy, I would not consider myself a "special snowflake". Classes are scheduled two days a week. My daughter attends, and if someone tells me on Wedesday that there is an extra practice occurring on Friday, my daughter will be at the practice. I know that recital months can involve more practices, and I plan accordingly. The problem is with the last minute stuff; I just want to know before the day-of.
  9. Thanks, everyone for the quick responses. I'm not in the US and know the What'sApp is very popular/common in the schools in this area. Most people are used to it or otherwise don't mind it. On my end, I don't mind changes, extra practices, whatever....I'm not trying to get out of anything. We love the ballet school and my daugher feels welcome. It bothers me that communication has become an issue....I just feel like things are headed in the wrong direction. I'll speak to the director. Again, thanks!!!
  10. My 7 yo takes ballet at a ballet studio we love; however, this year the organizers started using the What’s App. I hate the change. I am not into cell phones; mine isn’t “Smart†and mine stays in the car for emergencies. But there have been lots of little last minute changes and extra communications. There have been a number of things I would have appreciated knowing about earlier (or wouldn’t have known about, had a friend not clued me in). For those of you with young children at serious ballet academies: are last-minute/day-of changes common? Does the administration tend to send info via What’sUp – style applications? Is this the norm? I'd like to say something, but I don't want to look foolish....
  11. Yep, do this. Also, I haven't been there ages, but I love to visit Ave Maria Grotto in Cullman. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ave_Maria_Grotto
  12. How old are your daughters? My girls have been using ReflexMath for drill this year (adding/subtracting for the 7 yo and multiplication for the 9 yo). They each spend about 15 minutes a day.
  13. Yes, ChiefCook. Do you think RB would be okay as a "stand-alone" program? Does the program advance according to the child's needs (you wrote "beating a concept 'to death'", is that for reinforcement purposes or is the program just slow-moving)? Are you happy with the progress your DD is making? I will have a lot on my plate for the next school year, and “farming out†some things would help. I have a guilt complex: if I don't do XYZ every day, then I feel terrible. I know the big picture is the most important thing, but being able to check off a certain amount of material per day gives me comfort. If we went with RB, it would be the first year we didn't use Singapore as the primary program; I'm nervous and want to make sure RB is solid.
  14. Thanks, Incognito. She has tried Khan before....Though we liked it I don't feel comfortable making it the primary program. (Perhaps the problem is on my end, and I need to learn to use Khan more effectively.) Has anyone given RB a go?
  15. During this third grade year, my daughter used/continued with Singapore plus some other items (Beast, living books, ReflexMath, and math games). For fourth grade I am toying with the idea of the Stanford Redbird online program, coupled with the Singapore textbook and HIG. She would also do some extras (Beast, games, etc.). If we subscribed to RB, we would go the “Independent Study†route, then upgrade if needed/if the program fits. Has anyone tried the program? If so, what do you think of it?
  16. Shoot. One of the girls had fun with another book of this series last summer. Thanks for your help!
  17. Nope, doesn't work. It is definitely 6310, and it doesn't work for me. This series has worked for me in the past. I believe it may have something to do with my location. (I've also had trouble within the last few month with other numbers which have worked in the past.) Would someone with a subscription mind trying 6310 and letting me know if you can access it? Many thanks!
  18. My third grader, a strong reader, but extremely poor speller, has made great strides with Spelling Power this year. It is not at all "workbooky"; however, my daughter's spelling has improved so much I wanted to mention it.
  19. That doesn't work either. No results with 6310.
  20. I've had a subscription to TeacherFileBox (Evan-Moor products) for a few years. I used to be able to find what I wanted with the book code, but that doesn't do the trick anymore. Specifically, I wish to look at the following for my 7yo: http://www.amazon.com/Never-Bored-Kid-Book-Ages-7-8/dp/1596731591/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1432845150&sr=8-4&keywords=never+bored+kid+book+2. Searching EMC 6310 doesn't work nor does "Never Bored Kid Book". Does anyone know the magic words one must use to find this or other EMC publications? I am accustomed to sections, and that isn't the problem. The problem is that if I type in "EMC 6310" nothing registers.
  21. I read the article this morning, and it put a smile on my face! Please don't pay attention to the negative comments.
  22. It depends on how much review you feel he needs. Many of the games you/he may find too easy, but if you will use them later it may be worth it. Scholastic seems to be having another one of its "Dollar" times: http://teacherexpress.scholastic.com. (On the top right, click on the deals.) A few years ago I purchased a couple fun phonics books; the games and activities made for some fun afternoons. The price was right, so I had no guilt about not using everything. ;)
