  1. Storm Team 4: Groundhog Day Canceled Quote: "What may be the biggest winter storm in at least 11 years in Milwaukee has guaranteed that the city's groundhog won't see his shadow, because he won't see the sun, at least in a public setting. The Groundhog Club of the Milwaukee Area has canceled the area's 103rd Annual Groundhog Day Celebration." What will we do?:tongue_smilie:
  2. What is your temp today? It's 19 here in Plano, but with the wind chill it's only 6 degrees! We have so much ice under the snow that the wind is blowing cars off the road:eek:
  3. WOW! This must have rocked your world:001_huh: I am praying for all involved:grouphug:
  4. :iagree:And honestly, isn't there someone in every "religion" that has something negative said about them? Personally, it is what it is-it doesn't change the good things that he spoke/wrote about.
  5. I think I'll look into this next year too. This would make it so much easier for me to get things done:001_smile:
  6. This is one thing I really liked about SL. It was nice to have all of the supplies provided and the videos were great for "seeing" how it was done. The experiments are not overwhelming at all. I think we will go back to them next year.
  7. I don't like science either:/ And I def. dislike experiments-especially because our space is SO small. We just started FIAR and there are neat things you can do like grow clover, read about plants/flowers in the area you are studying-just very simple things that lead to further learning.
  8. Don't you love how they penalize us for owing them, but they can keep our money however long they want? :cursing: Once the IRS owed us $16k. Some moron just let the return sit on his desk and never processed it-for over a year!. I can't tell you how long it took for them to track in down thru different states and fix it. They even sent us letters saying we owed them!
  9. Here is some neat information about the Science and Folklore of Groundhog Day.
  10. I wish I had this post to read back in the Fall. I think it would have saved me much frustration and helped me understand what my childrens resistant was NOT. Where are you at in TX?
  11. I did A LOT of research before I purchased (my first year started Fall 2010). But I still ended up with curriculum that def. did not work for us. Most companies offer return policies-so I utilize that if needed. Or sell items as used here or on another site. Buying used is a great way to go if you are on a budget. There is also plenty of free stuff out there. We have switched: HW, Math, History, Writing, Grammar and Science. I wasn't bored with it, but I knew it wasn't for us. Sometimes it's just hard to know until you uses something if it's the right fit.
  12. Any subject in particular? Or the company in general? I can tell you that the math program is fabulous-LOVE it!! The company is also full of wonderful ppl.
  13. Describe what you mean by rigor. I'm not sure if they are resistant to it:blushing:. By "respond well", I meant tuned out, bored etc.
  14. Have you called HOD and spoke with them about this? Probably your best bet as they would be the best advisors:001_smile:
  15. My children can play LEGOS, draw, color etc. If I'm worried about thier retention, I'll ask questions afterward. When my DD was in 1st, I made the mistake of expecting for her to sit still during read-alouds. Boy was that goofy of me:tongue_smilie: Especially since we were using SL Core 1 at the read-alouds bored her to death!
  16. I did stumble upon this article in my early search on teaching methods. And it is wonderful! Reading it makes me regret even more the changes I made:glare:
  17. Honestly, I think they were completely bored! As I mentioned, the copy work isn't something we were fond of. However, I also didn't care for the narration or dictation in WWE. We switched to WriteShop and my DD likes it SO much better because it's more Creative Writing. FLL was just too redundant with WWE for DS (we switched to WS for him too, but then decided it really wasn't neccessary for 1st grade). I LOVED SOTW. But my kids were bored with Ancient History-espiecally all of the reading-we did split this up into 2-3 days depending on the length of the chapter. We also did activites on the non-reading days. I like the CM idea and have read the books by Catherine Levison. I liked the idea, but couldn't seem to embrace it. It was hard for me to figure out how to "use" it. We have now switched to FIAR for Social Studies, some LA, Art (which we didn't do before) and Science. Unit studies just seemed like a better way to go. This is my 1st year H'schooling and I've tweaked and changed our curriculum 3x. Part of me regrets dropping dropping WWE and SOTW. Part of me regrets dropping HOD. I just felt like there was so much more meat in the method. Classical seems like a very firm foundation for educating my kids. Not that other methods like eclectic, relaxed, etc are not good-I just don't feel comfortable teaching that way. I think this may have a bit to do with not really being able to gauge my children's learning at this point. Switching to FIAR has been a great simiplifier for us, but I don't feel like I'm doing enough-whatever that is:001_huh: Well, that's probably more than you wanted to know. thanks for listening. :001_smile:
