  1. My children have had some amazing teachers-I cried at the end of the 2010 school year because I love my sons K teacher so much. I don't know about every part of Texas, but the teachers in our district are required to teach to the TAKS test. I'm sure that cuts out the joy of teaching. We are moving back to Canby:) We will be driving the 2000 mile journey starting 7/29.
  2. I apologize-I didn't realize how many of you responded to this post!:001_huh: Thank you everyone for your encouragement and honesty :grouphug: After 2 weeks in PS we pulled them out. While I can respect the schools "standards", I do not agree with the fact that they view children as vessels to be filled with information. Our decision to pull them was not solely based on the schools opinion of where they were at academically. I have been schooling through the summer. We switched to Pathway Readers for DS (1st) and he is READING!! He is doing so well. DD (3rd) is using Horizons 3 Book 2. She is still struggling with triple subtraction problems-not quite getting that you can't take 6 from 4 (at this point). I'm wondering if Teaching Textbooks might be a better choice for next year-anyone? DH is better at helping her understand concepts. I just confuse her more :tongue_smilie: We are moving back home to Oregon at the end of this month and I will be H'schooling this Fall. Thanks again ladies for your support:grouphug:
  3. We used FIAR for part of this year. We did Volume II and it was too easy for my kids ages 6 and 9. They did not enjoy reading the book over and over. We also did the Cookbook and Bible Supplement. It is a fabulous curriculum, but just didn't work for our family. With SL just make sure you get the right Core/Level. The Cores are not grade level-so if you have a first grader that doesn't necessarily mean the child should do Core 1.
  4. I'm SO sorry! I went thru this a few years ago and it was and still is very hard. Even though the fetus wasn't growing in the right spot, it was still a baby to me. You are in my prayers.:grouphug:
  5. We do things like noun, pronoun, adjective etc for 1st grade. We will be starting PLL next week. My 3rd grader will be doing ILL. If I didn't-my kids would be very far behind if I had to put them in PS here in DFW.
  6. Nope-not harsh at all! I feel your pain and have recently told my kids the same things.
  7. Just my thoughts: You already have kids to raise-you don't need to babysit adults. I would move on. It doesn't sound like something that is positive in your life right now-which would be enough for me to drop it. But, that's how I roll:tongue_smilie:
  8. Every time I look at curriculum, I think WP. I even contacted them last year about ordering and was concerned because I saw many complaints on their board about the shipping. They explained to me that they were a very small company that was moving and had had some shipping problems-BUT they could get my order out w/in 3 days. I didn't order. 1. I can't think of 1 business that could survive with their practices. I have never ordered from any company that charges you for items that are not shipped-in fact, I was under the impression it was illegal. 2. I haven't seen anyone say that they disliked the people that run WP, but dislike their business practices. That makes it business, not personal. 3. No one should have to baby sit a company they have PAID. It's not the customers job! 4. WP should be shipping with INSURANCE! That way they can actually do something if items are rec'd damaged. 5. There return policy is NOT ethical. You should have 30 days from the time the item(s) were shipped. Not from the time your first item is rec'd. That is something I would consider reporting-especially if it cost me a pretty penny.
  9. You can also get to it thru Quick Links at the top, but when you hit save it just goes to the error page. However, it does save your changes. You can only edit in HTML tho:glare:
  10. :iagree: It's not our business, nor our right to pass judgement. Plenty of us screw up-it just doesn't show up all over the media!
  11. We just moved here from OR last summer. I joined PEACH and there is also another group called SAIL. Tons of H'schoolers here. Great H'school stores and plenty of special priced activities for H'schoolers.
  12. Ditto here:001_huh: The odd thing is-I just went to change my signature, but I kept getting the error message when trying to save. However, it is showing the changes at the bottom of this post.
  13. I'd get the US. I had bleeding and pain-my HCG still showed I was pregnant. Technically I was, but w/o the US I wouldn't have known it was tubal. It would have burst and I most likely would have bled to death. An internal US can see your pregnancy.
  14. We had to put the kids in Public School on Tuesday. It was not something we chose to do lightly-but it's done. I am just beside myself right now feeling like I failed my kids and put them behind. They have been in school two days and here is where we are at: (My kids were in Oregon schools last year. We are now in Texas) I found out yesterday that Raice is way behind the other first graders in his class in regards to reading and writing. The spelling words the class is tested on today are words Keelin worked on last year in 2nd grade! I knew TX had advanced academics compared to other states (especially Oregon), but didn't know it was this advanced. His teacher said he would be a good candidate to repeat 1st grade. I am heartbroken. All of the curriculum I used is spot on for 1st graders. Now he doesn't want to go to school because he knows he is "different". They are putting him in what he calls a special class for reading twice a week. We are going to work with him at home and put him in Summer School. His class is reading and spelling words like through, spoil, corn-he doesn't even read corn yet! Keelin is doing OK. We came in at TAKS time and other testing. Some test she had yesterday asked questions about plant facts and she didn't know the answers, but couldn't ask her teacher for help. Her class is working on multiplication which we weren't covering yet at home. She's a quick study so I know she will catch up soon. Yesterday she cried at her desk because she didn't know answers to test questions and was the last one to turn it in. Math comes naturally to Raice-his class is working on adding numbers to 9. Keelin's 2nd grade class last year worked on this at the end of the year! I just want to cover my head and cry. Chris has wanted to go back home since last Summer, so if we move again, I have no clue what to do. I feel like I failed my kids-especially Raice. Maybe I should have pushed him harder and expected more. I did so much research on curriculum and expectations for 1st and 3rd grade that I thought I had it covered. Now my son feels different and my daughter is crying in class.
  15. Please stop by:) http://adventuresinmyfathersworld.blogspot.com/2011/03/list-planit-home-education-e-planner.html
  16. I got to review ListPlanit's new H'school Planner. It is amazing!! I will be giving away 5 of them starting tomorrow. I'll post a link tomorrow with the details.
  17. :grouphug: To many, "Christian" is NOT a blanket term. I don't know what your faith is, but I highly doubt a Muslim would send their kids to your church/organization. Why? Because in a sense it would pollute their children. Muslims call themselves Christian. You won't see JW's sending their kids to a Catholic church either. JW's say they are Christian as well. Add'l scripture is also not defined the same by some. Additional scripture is usually considered books removed from the Bible at Reformation-historical writings from Biblical times. Additional scripture is generally not considered words added to the Bible 100 years ago by someone who did not live in biblical times.
  18. Epic Mickey, Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn, LEGO games, Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy 2. We also tried the new Wii Party at the mall and it was pretty cool.
  19. I'm not a big fan of the Wii. We bought it because it was geared towards children (games) than the Xbox 360 we have. However, most of the games Wii puts out for children are stupid! We have enjoyed Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Epic Mickey and the LEGO games. Our first Wii went out before a year was up:/ DH came home with a new one a couple of weeks ago:001_huh: Some of the newer games require the new "motion sensor" remotes. I plan on getting The Biggest Loser Challenge as I've heard it's good.
