  1. Here in Victoria, Australian you have to pass a written test on road rules at 16, then you can get a learners permit. You then need to drive with a large yellow and black L sign on the front and back of the car. You have to be accompanied by an adult on a full drivers license until you are 18. You have to accumulate 120 hours of driving time in those 2 years, then you Need to pass a written and driving test to progress to your probationary lisence. You then display a red and black P plate on the front and back of your car for 3 more years. During that time you have driving conditions. You cannot have more than 2 people in the car under 21 with you unless they are siblings, there are power conditions on the type of car you can drive, no blood alcohol at all etc.
  2. My oldest son has been living I shared accommodation ever since he left home for uni at 17. He is now 29 and still sharing a house with University students. There really is no other way to afford to live in expensive places like Melbourne. No way he could afford $600 + per week for a house on a single income while also doing a PHD
  3. A middle aged person renting out a room sounds fine. And I would think safer than sharing a house with unknown young people My just 18 year old was renting out a room in a middle aged couples house just for the last 6 months. He kept to his room. There was 1 shared bathroom for everyone. He paid $190 per week and was very lucky to have it. Other places were charging $200 week for a bed in a shared bedroom with strangers.
  4. Keep safe in the coming floods bookbard
  5. And all that beautiful productive farmland again.
  6. Apparently the EU is encouraging people in the whole of Europe to pick up their iodine pills. And suggesting they try source radiation suits. Awful awful. I think I need to set a limit of 10 minutes a day on news, and not look at any news 4 hours before going to bed.
  7. I am noticing that I am getting more and more stressed about the current world situation and every day that results in me planting more and more veggie seeds. There is no way we are going to be able to eat all those plants I am growing. Seems like I am tapping my toes waiting for the twins to finish their schoolwork so I can run out to the polytunnel and plant another punnet of cabbage and bok choy.
  8. I guess you are right Harriet. I never said this crime was the same as sex abuse, but rather was trying to say that covering up a crime in a family generally speaking allows the person to continue doing criminal behaviour the same way that covering up sex abuse in a family allows it to continue. I wasn't meaning they are on the same level. I probably misworded what I wrote. I would think an underage driving is worse than breaking and entering. the underaged drive could potentially kill others, breaking and entering wouldn't.
  9. 13 here is considered old enough to be legally responsable for their misjudgement and crimes
  10. This is very problematic and allows illegal activities to continue. People who don’t get caught for what they view as not big crimes continue to do illegal things Maybe the 13 year old needs to understand what a grave offence she has done. 13 is plenty old enough to say no that is wrong. Similar arguments were used for never reporting family members for child sex offences and look what a huge mess that has ended up becoming.
  11. A physiotherapist told me this when. I worked I. Aged care. He said something along the lines of. think of back discs as a soft jelly substance, every time you arch forward you are squishing it back. Arching back pushes it back to centre and greatly reduces back stress. Some other tips he told me are.. if you need to do something like pick something up, rest the other arm on your bent knee. If gardening , either go down on knees or use a pole or tool handle to hold on to to support some upper body weight.
  12. Some things to try Every time you do any arch forward movement, do an arch backward lie on the floor, bring bent knees up towards your chest and wrap arms around them. Rock gently back and forth walking fast with swinging arms
  13. Seeing as he didn’t really apologise I would report it to the police. It is illegal
  14. Just reread and see it is a step grandfather. Was he a father figure to you as a child, or a newer stepfather. I would be tempted to cut contact with him completely if he is a newer stepfather. He risked the lives of all your children and the lives of anyone in the vicinity by his recklessness. driving lesson off road in a farm paddock is one thing, driving on a road with other kids something else completely
  15. How absolutely awful. I wouldn’t know how to move forward with a relationship either. here that would result in all sorts of legal trouble for the adult and most probably would involve child protection.
  16. I do know several people who have had really bad side effects from 3rd dose. Inclining a very very close friend of my oldest. She has myocarditis
  17. twin in one of his rages where he is yelling, hitting, spitting and trying to kick me twin 2 when it is meal time and he is having one of his anxiety attacks meltdowns honestly I think it beyond supernanny. medication helps twin 1 a fair bit, and the psychologist is coming for dinner tomorrow to witness twin 2 anxiety attack meltdown about eating.
  18. your neighbors and fighting to guard your food would be the least of your concerns https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxJHecyYBno if you are unfortunate enough to escape getting vaporized then you will die of radiation or freeze to death. -78oC is very cold
  19. Prepping I think is a spectrum. there are the people who live in caves or bomb shelters and are expecting the world to end at any second all the way to the ones that have a couple of weeks or months of supplies to cover a short term disruption. the Australian government for the last 2 years has been encouraging every one to have at a minimum 2 weeks supply in their house of food. I always have a month supply, due to my location and how far I have to travel to get to a shop. floods and fires multiple times a year block roads here . In view of the world situation at the moment I have decided to have 6 months supply at the moment. focusing on things that are imported , like coffee and chocolate, and things that are about to skyrocket in price like flour . and as it is harvest time, we naturally have 12 months supply of things from the garden to last until next harvest time. We don't use the term prepper but the term self sufficient. and have tried to live as self sufficient as we can for the last 30 years. not because we feel that the world is about to end ,but because we really enjoy the lifestyle. We find for us it to be much healthier. people do rib us at times and ask us do we know it isn't the 1930's any more. I don't view myself a selfish. I am a bit confused about that. We work hard to grow enough food and store it to minimize our carbon footprint, live more closely with nature and live a healthier life. a completely side benefit is it is a way cheaper way to live, which has allowed us to save enough money to buy a house that we rent to a very low income family ( a few years ago, when a house in a small country town could be bought for 100K, would never be able to save enough to do that now).
  20. I don't understand. what do you mean selfish? please explain. When food is limited in the shops the people who are already prepared aren't the ones causing shelves to be empty. They already have food saved, which makes more food be available to others. I have always likened to to the parable of the Ant and the Grasshopper. the ant had enough food to last through the winter. the grasshopper didn't have any.
  21. madly harvesting all the end of the summer crops and planting the autumn and winter crops. harvesting tomatoes, have made a year plus supply of ketchup, salsa , spaghetti tomato sauce as well as dozens of bottled (canned) tomatoes. froze bags of green beans. harvested dried beans. frozen a year supply of capsicum, made a huge amount of apple crumble and stewed apples to freeze. which added to the peaches and plumbs already turned into pies in the freezer. Madewell over a year supply of gherkins, jam, berry ice-cream topping planting all the brassica crops that do better here in the autumn and winter, heaps of different types of cabbage, bok choy, cauliflower, broccoli, as well as lettuce, garlic, onions, broad beans, etc. a very busy time. The Polly tunnel is going to get new plastic put on it this coming week. It is full of veggies as well as flats and flats of seedlings growing to be planted out. the ripped old plastic DD22 wants as she wants to build a small plastic greenhouse for winter growing. DH has been making huge piles of compost.
