  1. This is encouraging to hear...I ordered the remedial english from R&S and intend to go to level 5 after that if possible...My son will be fifth grade in January (in name only it seems ;)) I understand about feeling like they will be behind for a while...
  2. I didn't realize you had more than one child to school next year...I would do exactly what you are planning to do in your situation...I have two starting ancients in January (1st and 5th grade)...That works out, but I have a 4 year old who won't start first for 2 years...He will start at Late Renaissance because that is where my older two will be at the time... I think maybe others thought you were only schooling one child as well... As far as history curriculum goes, we bought Mystery of History Level One (Ancients)...I hear good things about SOTW, but I wanted to try that one...I am still waiting for it to arrive, so I have no feedback yet...But it is another option...
  3. It is not just you...I have this same difficulty, and am wondering if I need to not go out as much, or go out at a different time... From what I am reading, many people go out way more than we do...The only set activities we have outside the home is church Sunday morning, church Wednesday evening, 4-H meeting once a month, and some church related activities on a Sunday or Saturday once a month...I was going to try to go ice skating once a week...And we also have farm CSA pickup once a week during the growing season (May - Nov) and a dairy farm pickup twice a month on Saturday morning...I do that one alone... Because we are sharing a car, most errands I run like foodshopping or whatever else I do when my husband is off work...He is off work on Wednesdays and Sundays and works late on Mondays...So most Wednesdays, school does not happen because we are all over the place, trying to run a week's work of errands and appointments...Whatever I can't do on Wednesday I do Monday morning...Not a good way to start the week! I think the answer for us is to try and get a second car, so I can go out during the aftternoon if I need to, after school but before dinner...Until we get another car, I have to become super organized about our errands, so that they can be done on Wednesday afternoons before dinner, but after school... School has not been a priority for us in the past, and that is something that will change this year...Until I read WTM I didn't have a strong conviction at all about education...I am grateful for that book and for this forum...For all of you ;)
  4. Hello and Welcome :001_smile: I think you could do ancients for two years...There is a lot to cover there...A few possibilities... 1. You could do half of it this year and the other half the next...Just break the info into two parts 2. You could do some aspects now, keeping it in the grammar stage, and then do other aspects next year (fifth grade) but introduce logic 3. You could bypass history altogether next year and study something else, like geography...Then you could just pick up history in fifth grade I personally think any of these would be fine...I am sure other people will have great advice...I am still kind of new...
  5. Hi Jessica... I am fairly new too...We are starting our school year in January, and I first read parts of WTM less than two months ago...More like a month ago... After reading the parts of the book that applied to me (book is way too big for me to read cover to cover at this time), I began searching for curricula to use...It took me about a month, but I have ordered almost everything I will need...I pretty much know what I want to start with now...Still a few questions here and there that you will see me asking... I suggest you look through the book first...Then look around here to see what people are using...Go subject at a time...Decide on an English, then Math, or whatever...Do this until you have everything covered...I realized alot from just reading through the book though...You could also ask questions about specific subjects and curriculum here... This is what I did...
  6. :iagree: All of it is true, but what's in red is the reason I like to buy certain books...If it is just a reading for pleasure book, that's fine...But if I will need it to teach lessons, I would rather own it...
  7. All of you Elemental Science users... I just bought the download and see that there is a 2 day option and a 5 day option...Which one do you do?...The 2 day seems to cover a lot of info at one time, but I don't know if it is realistic to plan for 5 days a week...Wondered what others do...
  8. I am wondering how often people go out during the week verses spending the entire day at home...I am thinking of taking the kids out either for an activity, library, or errands... I share a car with my DH for now, and because of it, I feel like we are always out when he is home...We all go out to run errands and do things...I feel like we are out too much...
  9. Oh RootAnn, you have made my day :001_smile:...I just went to Barnes and Noble and checked for this magazine but they do not sell it...I came home thinking I need to just get a subscription and saw this!... Thanks...I just subscribed and got that over 600 page planner for free...Definitely will look for this next year!
  10. I have that now...I have not finished reading it, but I like what I read so far...I would recommend it...
  11. This is true of my oldest son as well...He tells me that he wants to play with other kids but, "The kids don't want to play...They only want to do video games or watch TV"...He has this problem when he goes to someone's home...Naturally, everyone plays at my house because there is no TV or video games ;)
  12. Thanks so much Lee!...You have some very talented artists!...The manga type drawings on your blog and your daughter's animal drawings are incredible...My oldest son loves to draw...He is going to be really impressed by them :-)...Tahara

  13. Happy Birthday Jessie!...Thanks so much for all you have done :001_smile:
  14. We don't have TV, video games, or wi, and I don't even know what DS stands for :001_smile:...Our boys have never even been to the movies... They don't really ask for it...We got a movie to watch on the computer at Christmas, they have seen a couple of those over the years... Love this thread...Have to go now, will check back later...
  15. :iagree:We have too...I like alot of things about Waldorf...I just wanted to break away from anthroposophy...
  16. :iagree: This is what lead me to read WTM in the first place...Our family is Christian...We were Waldorf homeschoolers and my son attended a Waldorf school in first grade... I studied anthroposophy when I did the Foundations study course to become a Waldorf teacher...I took that class for 2.5 years...I have attended numerous anthroposophical meetings and almost became a member of the society until I really read into Steiner's teachings...It appears Christian in some aspects, but it is not...Anthroposophy is said to be a worldview and not a religion, but it seems like a religion to me... I really don't want to offend anyone with what I am about to say, but if you are using Oak Meadow you are not really giving your child a Waldorf education...You are giving your child a holistic education with some aspects of Waldorf thrown in...Same with Enki...Waldorf is TOTALLY intertwined with anthroposophy...The reason Waldorf people will tell you that you are not really doing Waldorf with OM is that they are anthroposophists and they know the difference between what is Waldorf and what is not, just like a Christian who reads the Bible can tell the difference between a teaching that is biblical and one that is not...There are many differences between OM and Live Education!, which is the homeschooling curiculum for the Waldorf purists...That is why many like OM...They get the holistic aspects without all of the anthroposophy...But the educational approaches are vastly different... That being said, in the end, I felt uncomfortable with anthroposophy once I really understood it...
  17. It worked for you :)...I am not doing it again though...I am now doing phonics with my 10 year old and wish we did it from the beginning...
  18. Hello Colleen and Welcome... Yes, I just started phonics with a 10 year old boy this month actually...I wrote about our difficulties here in this thread http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=226110 I have been using "The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading" and a free phonics program online here... http://www.thephonicspage.org/Phonics%20Lsns/phonicslsnslinks.html My son's reading has improved even over these few weeks...My son is not dyslexic, but we were using a methos of teaching that I really didn't understand very well and didn't emplement very well either...It was not a good fit for us, and as a result my son is behind in various areas... Hang in there...I feel like I am starting almost from scratch with a ten year old, but better now than later...I feel good about at least figuring out what needs to happen...We will just do the best that we can... :grouphug:
  19. Thanks for all of the help you guys!...I just skimmed through it at the store and wasn't sure how it was set up...I have no problem with myths, I just wasn't sure if I would know the difference ;) I am still deciding, but will not give up on SOTW...Am I in danger of becoming one of those moms who buy two things for one subject?! :tongue_smilie:
