  1. The methods may be a bit extreme, but I can see her point... I was raised very undisciplined by a very undisciplined single mother and I am definitely paying the price now...I don't wish I was raised quite like that, but do wish something was expected of me other than actually showing up at school and not causing any problems...As long as my mom didn't have to go to school for something, or get involved in some way, then I was doing good...It didn't matter if I did my work or not... I am not going to go as far as the article states, but I will take what was said into comsideration...
  2. Yeah, I am in this boat too!...I started making a list because this year's money has to buy next year's stuff, and I want to start thinking about that...It helps me to have an idea of how much things are going to be since I have to work within a budget... So no, I don't think it is crazy at all to already be preparing for Fall :)
  3. My husband agrees with you and had all three of my boys circ'd, even though he is not...I didn't want it done, but had to get over it...I don't think it will make an enormous difference in someone's life either way...
  4. :iagree: That being said, I have found lots of help here...I also have one in 5th grade...If you ask a question, people will give you advice...I find this forum very helpful for any age it seems...
  5. I usually end up ironing about once a week...Not too bad, so I don't mind it...Only if I am rushing to leave the house do I mind! ;)
  6. I bought the Ebook version of the TM and Student Workbook and printed them out...Lots of pages! I have three kids, so I bought the ebook so I can print the pages as many times as I need to...I would suggest getting the ebook instead of buying more than one workbook...
  7. My boys have been enjoying Elemental Science...We are using Biology for the Grammar Stage, and there are options for a 2 day schedule or a 5 day schedule...I am using it with all of my boys... http://elementalscience.com/biogrammar2.html There are 5 books you would need to buy to use the curriculum, but I got the books easily at Amazon for $50 for all of them...They could be bought used I'm sure too... My boys are really enjoying this curriculum, so the price of the books was worth it, IMO...
  8. Thanks you guys :001_smile:...I will join the newsletter list and wait for the update info...Post here when it come out!
  9. I bought MM 1 Light Blue in December, and I haven't recieved any emails or updates at all...How did you get on a list to receive update information?
  10. I had to laugh at this because I always think of that rule, "i" before "e" except after "c", and know how to spell "ancient" and "efficient", but never even realized it doesn't follow that rule!...It's funny how you take things for granted and don't even notice some things... We restarted working again today...We had a long day, but got through it... Thanks so much again for all of this great advice...We are focusing on the eesentials and starting where he is instead of trying to get him ahead...We still did our MOH and Elemental Science, but we spent more time on our Rod and Staff remedial workbook and MM Blue Series...I bought the ones (MM Blue) that covers the things he still has trouble with...We are also going through Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading to fill in the phonics gaps...We did copywork from the science book...
  11. Thanks you guys so much for all of the advice...I really appreciate it and it has been very helpful... :001_smile:
  12. I would have to answer no to all of the above questions...He can read, but slowly and does not have great comprehension...He was reading "Stuart Little" and having a hard time with understanding everything...He can think of something to write, but the spelling and grammar is all over the place...He can add and subtract, but didn't do well with carrying and borrowing, and it is hit or miss with knowing the times tables... I feel like he hasn't learned much...We are switching from a Waldorf background, where early learning is greatly discouraged...I did not provide him with a lot of instruction on these skills...He went to school for first grade, and was home second and third... It is possible that he has auditory processing issues...We are not sure...His teacher at his old school mentioned this to us, but she was not sure...
  13. I could really use some advice on how to play catch up with my oldest son...We are starting 5th on Monday, and when I look at the amount of work we have to do to catch up, it is very discouraging...It seems like he will homeschool until he is 20 to get all of this done!... I know it is possible to catch up, I'm just not sure where to begin...Everytime I take for granted that he know something, he doesn't know what I thought he knew...My DH said to me last night, "He is so far behind and really doesn't know anything"... Any advice on what is essential, what can wait for later, or if anyone has been successful at catching up, I am all ears :bigear: Thanks in advance...
  14. :iagree:The updated version of WTM has a chapter about "whole to parts" and why you should avoid it...I can't see them recommending anything that is whole to parts...It looks like everything you are using is parts to whole... Waldorf is a whole to parts method...It was after I read that chapter of WTM that I made a decision to switch styles... What are you trying to switch up on or stop using?
  15. We are using Elemental Science, but Biology for my 10yr old son (5th grade)...I think it is fine...Not sure what the chemistry is like exactly, but the biology seems to be okay for that age group...
  16. Since we are starting for the first time in January, I had to buy EVERYTHING during December...So everythingt you see below, I bought this month...I lived at the post office mailing stuff I sold so I could afford it all ;) - Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading - Rod & Staff English Remedial, Level 1, and Level 5 - Writing With Ease - Math Mammoth Blue, then Light Blue 1A & 1B, 4A & 4B - Mystery of History Volume 1 - Elemental Science Biology - Prima Latina - Logic Countdown - Homeschool PE We are also using bible studies from two different places - Cavalry Chapel and Church of Christ in Illinois...But they are free (thank goodness :))
  17. MOH also has "Challenge Cards" that you can download and use instead of making cards...They are $14.95 and we have them...I have the revised vol.1, so I have never seen the first one...I am happy with this one...
  18. I never thought of it being too cluttered and my son hasn't said anything, so I think this varies from person to person... I would print out a sample page from the site to see how you like it before deciding... I agree with the comment that being cluttered, much like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder...
  19. Thanks for this link...I think I like this better than what I was going to use for my oldest...I am thinking of switching to this...
  20. I have the book but an getting a download also...I am going to order the first section dowload without music...It is only $10...If I like it, I will continue to get the rest of the downloads...If not, I only spent $10 and not $43+shipping on CDs...My husband can burn it to a CD for me...
  21. This is what we are doing...My son is starting 5th next week... Math Mammoth 4A & 4B Rod and Staff Remedial English and then Level 5 Mystery of History Vol 1 Elemental Science Biology Writing With Ease 1 & 2 Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading Logic Countdown Prima Latina Calvary Chapel Bible Study Homeschool PE This is our first year doing classical and we have to do some remedial work...
