  1. Are you saying that there can't be diversity within a culture? ETA: just realized that since my tone was not conveyed along with those words, I need to explain that I didn't mean that in a snarky way at all, but as a sincere question. I don't think the idea of culture precludes diversity of thought or behaviors. But I have heard others say that America is too diverse to have a culture. I guess I'm just wondering where we draw the line to delineate what is "too diverse".
  2. Did the second workout of Week 3 this morning. I thought week 3 was going to be really hard, but it hasn't been as bad as I feared, I guess because it's shorter. At least, it feels shorter overall.
  3. I'm very slow! I decided to just train by time, and not worry about distance for now. Once I am able to run for 30 minutes straight, then I will measure the distance I'm covering, and start running longer a little at a time until I get up to 5k.
  4. That is odd. Our theaters do. The new releases usually get listed two weekends in advance.
  5. If I'm exercising regularly, I do sleep straight through the night. If I'm not exercising regularly, I don't sleep well.
  6. I did my first run of Week 3 this morning. I sort of messed it up, but it's not a big deal. I'm using those podcasts from "running into shape", which tell you when to run and when to walk, and I guess I wasn't paying very close attention when she explained at the beginning of today's podcast what we are going to do this week. I thought it was 3 rounds. So I was really holding back, going super slow on the running segments, thinking that the third round of 3 minutes was going to be hard. I was really psyching myself up for that last round, reassuring myself that I could do it, when she announced, "ok, you're done!" Huh???
  7. I completed run 3 this morning. :)
  8. I love barre! I went to a barre studio a couple of times a week for a month when they were offering a special rate. After that I had to give it up because it's outside of my budget. My regular gym has a barre class, but it isn't nearly as good as the ones at the barre studio. I hope they'll run another special some day! And yes, taking care of yourself is good for your baby too, though I know that's probably of little consolation when she's crying!
  9. A migraine woke me up around 4am this morning, so I'm going to have to postpone my run until tomorrow. :(
  10. Yes, I think a good documentary will whet one's appetite for more information.
  11. Oh, well while I do have criticisms of the show, this honestly isn't one of them. I don't expect documentaries to go into detail explaining the evidence, I expect them to be entertaining and informative. When I want the nitty gritty evidence, I look to books or better yet journals.
  12. I grew up watching Sagan's Cosmos over and over and over again! So my expectations were high, and the comparison probably not fair. But I was terribly disappointed. I watched two or maybe three episodes of the new version, and that was all I could stand. Sagan's version was beautiful, poetic, inspiring, while also being informative. I don't find the new version to be any of those things. Edited for typo
  13. I'm so sorry to hear that. :( I hope it heals quickly!
  14. I found this on DVD at my public library. My husband and I have watched the first couple of episodes. We're both really enjoying it! Is anyone familiar with this? http://www.amazon.com/Foundation-History-England-Earliest-Beginnings/dp/1250037557
  15. Oh, I'm glad. But I look forward to reading other replies too, because I'd really like to know what people are doing/planning in that regard. Either way is perfectly fine with me.
  16. Week 2, Run 2 done! Two days of clean eating did make this run easier than the one on Monday. I didn't go any faster or farther, but I felt a bit lighter and a lot happier! :D I haven't repeated yet, but I can tell you my plan (even though it's subject to change!). If I'm not able to finish a running interval, I will most definitely and absolutely repeat that week. I have an unusally fast heart rate when I exercise (and consequently get out of breath very easily), so yeah I'm afraid that's going to be a problem for me. I'm not wearing a HR monitor, but if I get to the point where I'm having chest pains while running (yes, that's happened to me before :( ) then I will definitely back off, and either repeat the week or possibly even go back to the previous week and re-do. I'm not having any problems with muscle or joint pain (knock on wood!) except for the fact that I keep twisting my ankles - luckily so far only very mildly and not a big deal. I am so clumsy! Anyway, if that does become a problem at some point I will probably just play it by ear and ask my husband for advice. He's been running for decades, so he has a lot of experience with pain!
  17. I don't think it's a matter of not trusting his teaching on celibacy. I think it's more a matter of seeing in the light of context. A man who had chosen celibacy was extolling the virtues of that choice and explaining why he thinks it is the better choice. I'm seeing that as a validation of celibacy, which if my feeble knowledge of history is correct, was something very uncommon in that culture at that time, and therefore would have been in need of defending/explaining. I am absolutely not seeing it as an attack on marriage, or in any way negating everything else that holy scripture, holy tradition, and the life of the church have to say about the importance and validity of marriage. Regarding what you said about purity culture.... I think it is more than just a matter of degree, more than just the intensity of the teaching. The motivation for the teaching is also different. And that different motivation leads to entirely different ways that this is lived out and practiced. But I just realized the time, and I have to go for my morning run before it gets any hotter. More later! I messed up the quoting. Sorry for the confusion!
  18. But I don't think that it is being ignored. Both the Orthodox and the Catholic churches have long traditions of encouraging celibacy, and of holding monastics in high regard. Not big on pledges and purity balls, though! :D ETA: I think it's being interpreted differently than the way you are interpreting it. I don't think it's being ignored. Well, I hate to have to admit it, but I honestly don't know. My Biblical knowledge could use some improvement. But I will say that maybe I should not have spoken of it in those terms. Perhaps it doesn't need to be a calling, but it can simply be a choice. As a parent, I am going to teach my daughter what I believe to be moral (on this and other topics, of course). As an American, I recognize that I live in a pluralistic society, and so I have no expectation of having my beliefs and morals taught in the public schools. But is this really being taught in many schools? I would have guessed that promoting virginity is not the norm for public school sex ed. Chewed gum and licked cupcake analogies have no place in any sex education program. That's just beyond inexcusible. Yes. But not to the same distorted, unhealthy extent that it is important in Gothard's sect and those like it, and I think also not even for the same reasons that it is important in those groups.
  19. That describes every run I have ever done in my life.
