  1. That may be the way it used to be but now even if you register as a homeschool they will not sell you this curriculum.
  2. That website looks awesome! Thanks for sharing!! I am so stressed about high school....I need to take a deep breath. We ended up order Holt McDougal Science from Rainbow Resources. This might be a good supplement to make sure we get all the labs in.
  3. Thank you!! That is very interesting. We are looking at the Holt Biology now and thinking maybe that is the better way to go. I am just concerned about the lab component and getting it accomplished but if they were that bad on Pearson maybe we would've been stuck any way....
  4. I am wondering if anyone has had a similar problem to the one I just encountered. I am trying to order the biology book with the 6 year license for my daughter and was told that they can only sell that to schools-public or private-but not homeschoolers. I am surprised by this since it is in the latest edition of WTM and it looks like other people have ordered this. Any thoughts would be great!
  5. Thank you all. I am aware that NYS doesn't actually require Earth Science for homeschooled kids. I probably should've clarified that! She is looking at a State School (SUNY ESF) so I am trying to tailor what we are doing a bit to match things they will be familiar with on the transcript. You have given us some great ideas and we are looking closely at a couple of things! Thanks!!
  6. We are just starting high school next year. My daughter already has a clear idea of what she would like to do in life. She would like to be an environmental educator either through the National Parks as a Naturalist or interpreter or with a private concern. Earth Science is going to be a large part of her education and is also required where we live in NYS. However its not recommended in WTM. I am wondering if anyone else has run into this and what you may have done as far as science is concerned. Thanks!
  7. Thanks so much everyone! These are great. We did sign up for the "Behind the Scenes" tour for all 3 of us which I think we will really enjoy.
  8. Hi! We will be traveling to Monticello this summer at my daughter's request. She is 11 and a strong reader. She has read a lot about Thomas Jefferson but not a biography. Anyone have a suggestion for a good one at her age? I'd also love to hear any tips about visiting Monticello if anyone has some! Thanks! Jennifer
  9. No, we hadn't considered that and I don't think either one of us realized that was an option. His current job is selling parts for Land Rovers and other British cars. We met while both working at a "high end" car dealership-Land Rover, BMW, Jaguar etc. He went back to school to be a chef but the hours were crazy for family life and the pay lousy so he went back to cars. :0) I think I can do day care wherever we end up, it will just take some time to establish myself but, on the other hand, if we are paying less out (no state income tax, is that correct? less on a house, less in sales tax (our area has 8% on almost everything other than food) then perhaps that would be less critical and I could just concentrate on the homeschool end of things!
  10. Great!! I had a feeling it might be perception. NY is rough to say the least! Thanks again so much!
  11. Thanks so much! I guess maybe if you can clarify a bit on housing? We've looked at some of the online house hunting sites and they didn't appear expensive but perhaps that's because we are coming from NY. We added everything up the other day and the amount in taxes we pay on our house is in the thousands...we don't live in a mansion by any means, its an 80 year old house with 3 bedrooms. Is it just in Cheyenne that its like that or is there a better place to look for jobs and housing. My husband is in the auto industry and I run an in home day care so we were thinking a city center was a better place job-wise.
  12. My husband has been doing a lot of research around Cheyenne. This is a relatively new idea on our part so we are in the research phase. Anything you can tell that might be helpful would be welcome!
  13. Thanks so much! That's great information. We are really leaning toward Wyoming at this point. The whole idea is so daunting but we really have to try I think.
  14. Hi!! My husband and I are starting to consider a move out of NY. We've lived here our entire lives but at this point we feel we need to leave before the state drowns us in taxes and regulations. We are thinking of heading west. My parents are thinking of Idaho, we are leaning toward Wyoming. This is probably still years away but we need to start planning and thinking now. Wondering if anyone out there from either of these states can let me know what the homeschool regs are like (they've got to be than NY) and any other information that might be helpful. Thanks!!!
