    Who is taking the PSAT tomorrow?

    It's a huge deal for us because we are Liberty U. grads and they give full tuition for semi finalist and full rides for finalists if you are selected (they have a certain number to give out each year.)  My oldest was able to squeak by and is there now and loves it.  Knowing we can't afford almost $30k a year its huge...I told my kids its like winning $100k.  🙂  No one wants to get out of college with a lot of debt. 

    That is true that many schools don't offer a lot but if you know particularly where you want to go and they offer it it is huge.  My son was also looking at Alabama in Huntsville who also offers a similiar deal. 

    I am not holding my breath either, my number 2 felt he did well but not good enough.  We'll see, I do think its unfair for those who take the test on test day and then others can hear the chatter and info and are able to take it on that Saturday.  😞  We are in VA which is a touch state to get it....still thinking of you all!  Good luck!

    Need help choosing math curriculum for 7 yr old new to homeschooling.

    That's tough, I am seeing this to be a common problem.  😞  How comfortable are you teaching math?  Are you willing to learn yourself and then teach your child?  I would just focus on what you want to teach... 2nd grade isn't that difficult figure out what you want your son to learn and then focus on those.  I use SCM Mathematics an Instrument for Living Teaching as a guide to what I should be teaching and focusing on.  I love it because it has the kids truly understand what they are learning and not just learning formulas, memorizing facts (without understanding) etc.  My son is in 3rd grade this year and I have done this approach with him for the past couple of years and its amazing what they can get if we direct instead of lecture...when they make the connections on their own it will stick and make sense to them.  Especially if you are planning on possibly sending him back to school I'd start from the beginning and make sure he understands early concepts because they build on each other!  Make it so your kid loves math again...you can do this!  🙂

    Funny, normally kids hate writing narrations down.  I would let her at it and if she gets "tired" you can finish writing it for her.  I would also do like someone mentioned above any difficult words or "key" words that you think she might need I would write out for her on the board.  Then let her at it.  You can after she is done point out one or two things (TOPS) don't want to discourage her - that she did incorrectly and them take a mental note for yourself and then move on.  She'll get it.

    My son really wants to do this his senior year (next year).  We are working on the application and wondering if anyone has any feedback, advice, experience in the process or if a child has participated in the government program?  We are hoping more for the summer program and not the year program not sure if he is ready for that maybe a gap year after he graduates.  His focus is Arabic he has had 3 yrs. online school, done an immersion program this summer with Startalk which he loved....and is in his career ambitions...thanks for your help!!

    Geography suggestions

    There are some great books you can use for living geography.  For high school we have combined our time period and then studied different places and just added mapping to where we were reading about.  There are many good books out there, some that we have really enjoyed are: 

    ·       American Traveler by Zug -1700s

    ·       Travels of William Bartram by VanDoren - 1700s

    ·       A Long Walk to Water: based on a true story by Linda Sue Park - 1900s

    ·       Sufferings in Africa:  The Incredible True Story of a Shipwreck, Enslavement, and Survival on the Sahara by Captain James Riley - 1800s

    Help with science? Please? (Senior year)

    From what I've been told and have experienced they don't care so much as long as you have 4 yrs. of science. My son took Astronomy one year and studied on his own and then took the clep at the end of the year.  This was his fun class he wanted to do.  He also dual enrolled his last year (senior year) taking Chemistry at the college.  So he technically took 2 yrs. in high school but they don't care since he took what they are mainly looking for is some earth science, biology, chemistry and physics.  Let her have her choice...someone else mentioned Anatomy I loved that as a student!  🙂

    Looking for Rhetoric course online?

    CLRC online is offering a class for Classical Rhetoric for high school students.  I know Wes (my oldest has taken classes with him before) and he is phenomenal...he is teaching a live once a week online course for students this year through CLRC where we have taken classes before.  Anne is wonderful....anyway they have openings and I thought I'd let you all know...small class and a great opportunity for your youth!  My middle son is taking it this year....Here is the link and info below:

    Math Help...PLEASE....PreCalculus online option

    Any experience with Liberty Tutorials ?  They only meet twice a week for one hour each meeting which is doable.  It's the 3 hrs. that is a killer!  Not sure about NCAA requirements. 

    Or HSLDA?  I know they are NCAA accredited and the times are doable.  Just wondering on the rigor...I want it to be rigorous enough and that he will be prepared for Statistics in college the next year with checking all of our boxes.  😛

    Yeah, I didn't see that!  I hate that he doesn't use a textbook though and wasn't sure if that would be a problem (for NCAA).  I think it would be a good fit if it was thorough enough.  My oldest child took DO but my middle one seems to think he might need a little help and that way once a week he could ask questions if he had any.

    My son is very good at math, doesn't like the idea of having to sit for 3 hrs. a week listening to lectures but would like one class to go over assignments possibly one day a week.  He took Algebra II this year with Foersters using Math without borders (we have done Derek Owens all prior to this but thought we'd try this since it was cheaper this year) he has done really well we are now on chapter 10 but that begins full on trig and I didn't realize and he is having some difficulty and I can't help him!  Evidently Veritas Press uses the same book for PreCalculus and trig begins on chapter 9.  😛  So he is beginning the PreCal and evidently needs some assistance.  So we were looking for a good math program that offers once a week meeting that is a well rounded program.  He is not planning on going into stem even though he is good at math not an interest for him.  He is planning on taking Statistics his senior year so we plan on doing that at the college.  Another thing we have to consider is it being approved of NCAA since he is hoping to play sports in college.....So any ideas for this math would be greatly appreciated!
