  1. Pearl Habor movie, proceed with caution. We watched this and before it even ended our 10/11 year old boy was crying (that has never happened before because of a movie) He was referring to the scenes of burned people saying that he never fully understood how horrible people are to each other.
  2. I state on the transcript that the GPA is unweighted. I use "Honors" in the title of the course for studies that were prep for the AP exams. "AP" is trademarked and cannot be used in the course title if the course was self-studied. THe quality of the work is reflected in the grade received for the AP exam which Iist on page two of the transcript along with CLEP, DANTEs, Dual Enrollement and ACT/SAT scores.
  3. I would check out some fun audio books, she can listen while she does holiday coloring or making cards. Make an extra batch of goodies to give away to the neighbors. She could start decorating and organizing her notebooks/binders to be used in homeschooling, get stickers representing the different subjects and stickers to put her name on the front. Watch some holiday themed movies from netflix, slip in a few classics and try for a documentaries relating to upcoming areas of studies. Have her pick her absolute favorite animal, activitity or hobby to research and write about. - NO GRADING. Find time for a favorite read-aloud. (I must admit, I am a little jealous - all the ideas from everyone sound like so much fun, I wish we didn't have a schedule to follow.) Pick up a few craft projects from Hobby Lobby.
  4. By subject worked well for us. Accepted at Hillsdale, Hope College, Cedarville University, plus a few more.
  5. My husband and I are 52, Kiddos are dd19, ds16, ds13 and dd 6 (adopted). No problems so far - only wish 6 yo and 13 yo were a little closer in age. I have noticed that most of the people we hang around with are younger than us because they have kids the same age as ours. We married at 30 and each traveled a great deal before we met. For us, older means financially secure. We are there for our aging parents when they need us, our kids are also a big help to the grandparents. One little problem, when I was visiting the grocery store with dd 6 (small for her age) after a really rough day and not feeling well, a lady in the check out lane kept asking about my granddaughter (no more grocery shoppping without wearing makeup).
  6. "My daughter is the same way, she is always in a book when it is time to start school. I have learned to compromise. If I let her just read her book, then we would never get school started or done. But I also want her to keep that reading love she has strong, so I always tell her school is starting, but she can take a few minutes and read to the end of the chapter. This way I am telling her that her book is important, but that school is important as well." We would do this but I have learned that we need to identify which chapter - the current chapter not the last chapter of the book.
  7. I have had two (so far) use the Chalkdust DVD program and both liked it.
  8. Our co-op uses the US History based writing lessons. We love it and the class is very popular. Oldest dd was writing books at a very young age, we did not use it for her, but for the boys it was great!
  9. Our youngest dd is from China and people stop us all the time to comment on her looks, very exotic and she really stands out in our Dutch community. It does get old. We have taught her to politely say thank you and to move on. When peolple say I have a beautiful daughter, I respond that I believe ALL my children are beautiful. I don't think dd will get a big head because she knows about things the others can not see, like the very large and unsightly scars from heart surgery. We also stress that people see the beauty on the outside but God sees the beauty in her heart which is the only beauty that matters. In China, my oldest blond dd became "invisable" while my sons received all sorts of attention. That was a first for them and for her. People were always stopping to take pictures of my sons and to have their children stand by them for pictures. The little old ladies would just hug my boys over and over again. It was quite the experience.:)
  10. Our all time favorite family vacation was in and around Colorado Springs. We are praying for everyone impacted by the fire. The kids are so sad to think Flying W is gone and are watching the pictures of USAF Base and Garden of the Gods. We are also praying for the men and women fighting these fires, that they may be kept safe. Prayers from Michigan :grouphug:
  11. We used it and loved it. We would do Bible passages instead of poems for every other page. The kids (college age) still recite them and have gone on to research other poems by their favorite authors. They continue to memorize and have said that the practice of memorization has help with foreign lang. and science classes. I believe it helped them increase their vocabulary and learn proper language patterns which has helped them to write well.
  12. This past year was K, 6th, 10th, and freshman at college. We say we have them from Phonics to Physics.
  13. I know it is important to find the right fit in a college. My daughter was accepted at Hope but found the visit to be quite a turn off (tour guide, classroom visit, lunch in cafe.). On the other hand, her visit to Hillsdale was great. The Palin look alike receptionist was nice and the look was very flattering on her. The interview with admissions was wonderful ( a year later the interviewer still had her hand-painted thankyou card on his desk) and the cafeteria visit was nicer than the other colleges we visited (Wheaton and Hope among others). When we have stayed at the conference center we have never had bug bites. DD is just finishing her first year at Hillsdale and LOVES it, Hillsdale was the perfect fit for her. She has been visiting a church in town and she called me yesterday to say that even though she has only visited there 3 -4 times, they brought all the visiting students a gift bag of snacks and items for finals week. At the beginning of the year she was "Adopted" by a local grandmother who has had college students for dinner, for tea, she has offered her house for our family when visiting, she brings cookies and treats to my daughter. This woman has been doing this for years and some of her "adoptees" are now second generation. My daughter volunteers at a local non-profit in town and has spoke of how appreciative the employees have been. The professors we have met at conferences have been easy to talk to and my daughter has found them very approachable for help. DD's roommate is gluten-free and she and her parents have expressed to us how wonderfully accomodating Saga has been with her special requests. No college is perfect, but we have had a WONDERFUL experience with Hillsdale.
  14. Accepted: Hope College, Cedarville University Accepted and Enrolled: Hillsdale College :001_smile:
