  1. Well my "religion" is Christianity, and I'm Protestant, so it doesn't really narrow it down enough :D
  2. If you would fly on a commercial airline (not even including the backscatter machines), or use a microwave oven, then the amount of radiation that may possibly get to you on the California coast should be no concern. At all. Hope that helps! :)
  3. Must Have: Good children's program Contemporary worship Good theology/sound doctrine Not KJV only Conservative (no female or homosexual pastor) Like to see: The bigger the better Friendly people Young families Uses ESV or NASB usually when preaching Sermons based on Bible rather than topical Usually same pastor, rather than several rotating through We prefer an exciting, relatively young dynamic pastor who isn't afraid to step on toes Our theology: Well, she is mostly Arminian, and I am mostly Calvinist by now. We both grew up in mostly Southern Baptist churches, then attended (and loved) a charismatic non-denominational megachurch in Texas after we got married. (Probably very similar to their sister church New Life in Colorado Springs) so we are fairly flexible as far as that goes. Trinitarian Saved by grace alone (through faith) Biblical inerrency in the original languages. We believe in tongues as a private prayer language, not as proof of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We are continuationist (aka non-cessationist). We are complementarian. We don't believe in infant baptism. Baptism and communion are both merely symbolic. Our previous church leaned slightly toward "Prosperity Gospel" or "Name it claim it" or "word-faith" (While our lead pastor didn't often preach that way often, people like John Bevere and Creflo Dollar have guest preached at our church) - but I did not like that AT ALL. We do not believe drinking alcohol is a sin. Ask if there are any other questions!
  4. That is where we started too. If the church doesn't have a website, we figure it probably won't be a good fit for us anyway!
  5. I would maybe try to give it anonymously. I am afraid your bil would reject it as charity, but can't return it if he doesn't know where it came from.
  6. So, we moved here about a year ago, and are having a lot of trouble finding a church home. We have visited several, and are just not satisfied with any of them for various reasons. How do you and your family choose a church to worship at? I imagine it is easier if you are a particular denomination (we aren't) and there is only one or two choices in your local area. I don't want to visit every church on the island (we could do that each week until we move away, ha!) until we find the "perfect" one. I don't think it exists anyway. We naturally have some specific things that are non-negotiable, and some more that we would "prefer," but we aren't terribly picky, IMHO.
  7. I have the latest gen Kindle, and you can definitely put the free online pdf's on there.
  8. You might also check into the American Heritage Girls...they are kind of a competitor to the Girl Scouts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Heritage_Girls No cookie sales, AFAIK. And they have a partnership with the Boy Scouts of America, FWIW.
  9. Oh, I am already gun knowledgeable...have to be for my job ;)
  10. Yeah, I have read WTM and encouraged her to read some of it. She declined to do so, at that time. :P As some background, she was hs'd her entire life, and learned to hate school because of that. She was constantly busy with school and working the family jobs, and much of her schooling was video based. I got the book The 3 R's, and have been trying to get her to read it for the last 4 months. She has read the first 15 pages or so.
  11. What do you mean by "start with yourself"?
  12. I know one of the charter schools here uses K12, I didn't know it was classically based. What about Sonlight or Veritas Press?
  13. I remember having "computer lab" in elementary school. They told us we needed to learn to use them since in the future they will be used for so much. They were right. I think compromise and being selective about what they play is going to be your best option here. Interesting article here: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/02/070220012341.htm
  14. For those of you who choose to teach your children how to safely use firearms, at what age do you do that? Do you take them to a gun range with a professional instructor, or just teach them at home? My co-worker's dad taught her how to shoot using a .22LR rifle when she was 6, and she is still an excellent shot. To me that seems like it would be a good age to begin, of course depending on the maturity of the child. Thoughts? :bigear:
  15. FYI, we ended up getting the Jesus Storybook Bible Deluxe edition - we all really like it! Haven't listened to the CDs yet.
  16. How do you all involve your children into politics? My thinking is that I want to impart my values to my children and I pray they will be politically active. I mean, I want them to be able to think for themselves and make their own choices of what to believe. ;)
  17. Someone mentioned The Matrix and V for Vendetta. I would agree with these. Also, Serenity.
  18. Went to the used bookstore today and got Desiring God - John Piper, and The 9 Marks of a Healthy Church - Mark Dever.
  19. Thanks! I do remember getting a catalog from them. Looks like a full first-grade curriculum set would be $571. Does that seem high, or about right, or is that on the low end of what I should expect?
