My 6 year old has been playing violin for 11 months. She practices about 15 min. a day. I switch it up between playing with her (on my guitar), having her play to the Suzuki track, and her practicing on her own.
My 11 year old practices at least 30 min. a day on his drums.

Several years ago, someone on this forum helped me find out how to contact Scholastic Canada, so I could order books in French. I'm wondering if anyone has ideas on how to do that. I'm hoping to find some audio books for my 6th grader.
Thanks!

Is there a way to order the recording forms for the entire year? It'd be easier for me to do that than to run up to Office Depot and have them copied front and back.

Thank you!!!! I just used a Zaner-Bloser pad for my oldest, but I think DS2 would prefer these.
For those that haven't seen it, I have spelling city review lists for Levels 1-3. They include the extra words and are not listed by steps. I plan on adding 4 and 5 this year.
Level 5 is now up. Click the link above.

If I were to choose a box, I'd probably go with Memoria Press.
I'm doing the MP box for my two oldest next year.

I think you'd be happy with them. I don't like a lot of children's albums. For example the only Wee Sing albums I can take are Fun 'n Folk and America. I think the CCM songs are well done.

I feel the same way.
I've actually been trying out different French tutors via Skype. And, this is going to sound odd, Pimsleur works surprisingly well for the audio/oral component. Audible has all 5 levels. I borrowed a sample level 1 from the library. DD has done about 5 units now and can respond very quickly within a very narrow timeframe and has a very good accent. I think Pimsleur plus textbook with online class plus another hour or two with private tutor might work.
Pimsleur is amazing. DS1 is on level 2 of Pimsleur and picking it up so fast. He was on Learnables Level 2 at the time. I plan on adding Memoria Press French in 2 years to help with the grammar/written side of it. I think with a modern language, it is best to get them speaking first.

I'm having my oldest take an online class with Memoria Press. I'm excited, and it will be his first online class. :)

We use Art Reed for 8/7 and LOVE THEM. I switched my 7/6 edition to match the Art Reed DVDs so when DS2 gets there I'll have them.

Everything in my signature
I'm adding more Memoria Press next year, such as FM of Middle ages
I'm going to look at the daily science. Thanks for that.
For the entire family:

All of my children including the 5/almost 6 year old use it independently of me. I'd say it takes them between 5-15 minutes a day.

I don't use CC, but I use a Catholic curriculum that has similarities called CCM. I also used to own Living Memory. CCM gets done in our house, because the tracks are loaded into my cloud and playable on our roku and the kindle. It also gets done, because we have the timeline cards for practice and a nice student book for the children to look at while they listen. Living Memory would be just sitting on the shelf if I hadn't sold it.

I like the hardback books, because they hold up better. However I prefer the 3rd edition over the 2nd, because it shows in parenthesis what lesson a problem was covered on. This way the students can go back to that lesson and review when they miss a problem. However, I bought the 4th edition for 7/6, because I'm also aligning them with the Art Reed DVDs. I bought all my sets at a used homeschool shop :hurray:

That is a good idea, but I'd bet it wouldn't get done in our house. Workbooks seem to keep us on track. It is one of the reason I'm growing to love Memoria Press. I'll keep thinking. I have 6 months.

My 2nd and 3rd children will use LC1 for two years starting in the fall. The youngest will just be listening and watching. The 3rd grader will use the book. Would you recommend
(1) doing everything at half pace?
or
(2) completing the book at regular pace with no quizzes and then repeating with quizzes and the extra practice?

I used to have a blog link to a review of SOTW2 for Catholics. We are just beginning the audio version of SOTW2, and I want to remember which parts to discuss with my children as they come up. I'm doing a search and can't find the blog I used to go to. Does anyone know which one I'm speaking of?
Thanks!

Thanks for this.

My DS2 has a late bday. I've always wanted to give him an extra year. We did school some years, too, so that postponed that. This year he's doing 3rd grade for 1 1/2 years. Then he'll do 4th grade for 1 1/2 years. It is a good time for it now.
-
Thank you for this. I'm thinking of adding this for my DS2.

I'm looking into this for geography. My children LOVE to draw. They love geography and maps. We also like curriculum that has a repetitive procedure (week to week). This looks like a good fit for us, and I'd love to hear personal experience.

Oh, my oldest started 100EZ at 3 years 9 months and took 9 months to go through it. The didn't do it until 5. The last started at 4 years 9 months. I started them when they were ready.
-
I love love love 100 EZ lessons. Used it with all three kids. The last two switched to his Funnix program on the computer. I used AAS after they were reading from EZ Lessons.

Thanks for all the feedback!!!

I've decided to use Saxon/Hake grammar for middle school for DS1. We'd been doing Shurley, but it is on the shelf due to teacher intensity. I'm thinking I should go ahead and start him on Saxon grammar now. Should I get the 5th grade book and have him go through the summer? Or should I go ahead into the 6th grade book and have him go at an easy pace for 1 1/2 years?
Abeka vs Saxon Math
in K-8 Curriculum Board
Posted
If he's going into 4th grade and using Abeka 4, I'd say he'll be right on track. They are both spiral, so that will be familiar. I think Abeka is slightly more challenging. Saxon is more focused on the quick recall. A wise mom once posted that the point of Saxon is to be able to do the lesson in 30-40 minutes. If he can't he's in the wrong level. I wish I'd read that before. It isn't a bad thing if he is doing some review in math, so he can focus on other areas that may be a challenge. I learned this the hard way. Also, I had my oldest bumped up in Saxon, because he could do the first 1/3 of the book easily and did test into it. What I found was that he hit a wall, because he just hadn't moved to that analytical learning that usually comes right at 7th grade. This year I actually put him back one book (on grade level), because he need to work heavily in writing and literature. It was a good call, and he can do it without my help.
HTH. (Also, I use Abeka 1-3 and then switch to Saxon 5/4)
