  1. when we take a hands off approach. Knowing math was a struggle I always kept up on the lessons so that I could be available to answer questions. She usually only needed little reminders, but I as able to give her those. Since you struggled with math a bit when you were younger you may really appreciate TT. Just a note about TT and its style... Your dd would listen to the lecture and see the notes on the screen. Then there are approx. 3-4 practice problems that explain the process and how they got their answer. Then on to the problems. She would do these in the book. Any that she got wrong would be explained and worked through on a cd provided. This is designed to be self-teaching and for them to take responsibility for their work. I just set up my expectations before she started (have to look at the cd on those you got wrong and understand why you did) and let her go. In the beginning I sat next to her every lesson to watch her work and see what type of mistakes she was making. After awhile I only sat with her during the new problems (4-5) then let her work on her own with the review problems.
  2. My dd wants to play soccer at the local high school (smaller town) and I was told that there would be tryouts at the beginning of the year. She's never done tryouts. She's played several seasons of soccer through the parks and rec program, but that was several years ago. What can see expect with these and what are they looking for?
  3. Teaching Textbooks was what worked wonders for my non-math kid. I had to accept that math was not her strong suit and if we were going to do it, at least "understand" and "remember" what she was learning. Prior to that we did Math-U-See. It really depends on what kind of learner you have. Is she visual, hands on, need to know the "why" before it sinks in? Unfortunately, I see the frustration a lot between parents that just "get" math and can't understand why their child doesn't. I was not a kid that got math. It's something hard to explain other than the explanations need to get through in a different way for understanding. Until it does, you will not be able to apply it to anything else.. even another Alg. book. So, if you aren't fond of TT, then maybe something that has a visual/hands-on feel to it. Sorry I couldn't be more help, but I spent many years going through different math programs and felt TT was a breath of fresh air.

  6. This has sadden my heart so very much. She is a beautiful child and I only want to see her flourish. She starts Christmas break from her school today (for 3 weeks), which is great timing. It will give us time to make those decisions regarding her academics - of which, I agree, are secondary at this point. Since reading her diary we've found other things, like letters from friends who tell her that they aren't thinking of suicide anymore because of her friendship. How does a 15 yr. old girl even begin to deal with something like that? They don't, obviously. My dh and I do agree about redirecting her and helping her to find healthier relationships. We know counseling is in order, but need to talk to her first to get some idea of what's going on. We want to approach her in the right way and help guide her to a healthier life. I'm already planning on some things we can do together to help with self-esteem. This will be a long road, but I'm grateful we found this information and it is still early. Thanks again for all your advise and concerns. I know as moms, we can all feel that pain when our babies are in peril.
  7. that the main reason she wants to be there is due to a boy she likes (though says he is only a friend) and his parents have already been in contact with us regarding their interest in each other and their concern. He has had some suicidal tendencies prior. The destructive behavior is cutting. I've learned all this from reading her diary (and I'm okay with that, just for info.). The cutting scares me to death. I think it has just started and I really think she got the idea from some of these kids. Wow, after writing all of this it makes me think - why is she there? Sometime seeing it all out on the table (or monitor) makes it real clear.
  8. My 15 yr old dd, whom I homeschooled since 3rd grade started attending a "homeschool high school" for her high school years (they go 2 days a week and work from home the other 3). Freshman year was great, but her Sophomore year has been different. One of her best friends left (there's only 13 in her class - total of 80 in the school) and went to another place and this used to be a school where you had to have done at least 2 years of homeschooling prior to enrolling. This past year they've allowed in kids coming in straight from public school and may have homeschooled one year when they were little, etc. There seems to me to be some troubled kids in the school and my dd seems to be a magnet. I've just recently learned that she is engaging in some destructive behavior... the same behavior I've heard her talk about that some of the other kids do. She has also lost interest in things that she used to love - art, horses, and most importantly, her relationship with God. I think that my dd is under a lot of stress (the school is very rigorous academically as far as workload, but not really depth - a lot of BJU, Glencoe, and Abeka) and she has already stated that she learns things to take the test then forgets them (not new stuff, I know). She gets straight A's, but at what price? She then has all these friends that have some emotional baggage, no time to engage in outside activities (she's a slow worker and schooling takes her all day). My gut tells me this may not be the place for her, though she is highly social and would really miss some of her friends. We have other options, but just not sure if I'm reacting or not. The school is very tough on dress code (uniforms), what they can wear at school sponsored events and have a high standard of behavior. The idea is that all these kids would be perfect little children running around, but there are serious issues underneath. Don't get me wrong, there are also some really good kids there too. It's the same as in any situation like this. Should I help her deal with these friends and stress of school or take her out of the school?
  9. I've heard you can take just one and I think my son would do better on the SAT, given the format. What did you use for your child to bring their scores up - esp. in math?
  10. It says on the product description that it would take about 1-2 hours per session. Is this an hour daily - 5 days/week? I'm looking at the geometry one and here is not much information on how it is all laid out.
  11. Has anyone seen how kids do on the ACT/SAT with this math? Maybe I'll just use this instead of trying to supplement.... this looks perfect for my very visual learner.
  12. I know I've seen it somewhere! I have the Basic College Mathematics (6th ed.) that we used for Pre-Algebra. What is for Geometry, Alg. II and Trig/Pre-Calculus? I think the Geometry is Essentials of Geometry for College Students (2nd Edition) Thanks!
  13. I'm considering this a supplement to my dd math homework she currently has.. using it as a better explanation than what is provided in her co-op math book. The sample videos were approx 18-20 min. long. Is this typical for the instruction part? How long does a math lesson take? It's hard to get a feel for the actual homework on the samples... they just have coursework and quick check, which only have 6-8 problems. Can you tell me how you use this program and what your thoughts are? Thanks!!!
  14. My kids are both doing Glencoe math this year through a co-op and I'm struggling. There is so much info in each lesson so they cover tons of material, but there is no depth and no time to absorb. Do you believe in fewer problems, but more thinking and real world in a lesson? I'm close to pulling my daughter out and doing Teaching Textbooks Geometry. I'm sure it doesn't cover everything in Glencoe, but at this point I want her to "get" what whe is learning. What is your philosophy on math and having complete understanding, verses learning material and moving on? Maybe not the best way to phrase this question. I just want to pick something and stick with it. If we stay with Glencoe it would require a tutor. Thanks!
