  1. This one won't be the quality of the Ipad, but we bought this for our teen son. It has held up very well and has had no problems with Android apps. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008XM630S/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00
  2. I think we may be the odd family out, but we don't see the benefit of having the expensive electronic devices when kids are young. My 16yodd purchased her Ipod eight months ago, with her money. Although she is responsible with it, it is still a temptation just to "stay on it " all the time. So even though it may not be "bad", would there be better things to fill his time? Like you said, Legos? Keva Planks? etc? To us, it is a slippery slope introducing I-anything too early for our family. Just food for thought.
  3. Congratulations! I purchased this camera last year, and have been very very happy with it. Some accessories I bought: A extra battery (to me, this has been critical) Lens 55-300mm (I tried both the 200 and 300 in a retail store, and liked the 300 better. The pictures are amazingly clear) This book has been very helpful: Lens keeper things for each of my lens caps : Lens cleaning pen Couldn't find links, but I have a clear protective filter (nikon brand) on each of my lenses. Provides a little peace of mind! Of all those, I would get the battery first! I just got this for Christmas this year. If I think of more, I will edit my post. Enjoy your new camera!!
  4. My 15dd has played for at least a year or two. We have discussed anything "objectionable" and she concurs with what we have said, so far. She has some expansion packs (pets, ambitions) that she enjoys - but I haven't allowed the Late Night pack. It just throws up too many red flags for me to be comfortable with it at this point. That is just me, though. We did laugh today about it being Barbies for big girls, like a PP said!!!
  5. My 12yo ds has subscribed to PS for two years. When it comes in the mail, he knows I need to look through it for the ads - they are all grouped together in the back. One quick tear, and the magazine is good to go! He loves reading it, and while I don't like the ad situation, it is easily remedied. Also, we subscribed to this and other magazines through Amazon and have never had a problem. They even send a reminder when the mag is up for renewal.
  6. convenient can't spell it without REALLY thinking long and hard about it!
  7. When my husband was a pilot, the crew called the automated voice "B***ching Betty*, because she only spoke up when something wasn't right. I call our GPS Betty, and the kids have never understood why!!!
  8. I would absolutely bring it up with Cubmaster. And request (politely demand) request to another den. If this one isn't a good fit, then it shouldn't be a big deal to transfer. If they don't allow a transfer, then I would look to moving packs. Good luck! Mom to an Eagle (17yo) and First Class Scout (12yo)
  9. At our house, the TF kept them for awhile. Then realizing with four kids, she had no idea to whom they originally belonged and began to get grossed out a bit. So those all went, uh, to tooth heaven. Now the TF leaves her money and the tooth behind. That way said kid can keep or toss, but it is no longer my, I mean, her responsibility.
  10. One year my daughter went as a load of laundry...took a laundry basket from dollar store, cut out the bottom so it could go over her head and sat around her waist. Twine "straps" held it in place on shoulders. Threw some towels and socks in there, along with an empty (or small) bottle of detergent. It was really cute, quick and cheap!!!
  11. Hey Tamara - we are watching it on Netflix right now, the Disney 1968 version. Deciding on whether our goose/frog will audition this Saturday. Didn't know you were on the boards - good to see you! Mendy
  12. What a timely post for me! We smelled something HORRID in the garage today. It took awhile to discover the source, but evidently our cat left us a gift some time ago. And we didn't know. Yes, dead mice smell worse.
  13. Of all the sad things I have read lately (news and whatnot), this is the one that made me cry. :grouphug: and prayers
  14. We did the same field trip a couple of years ago, and I used the free tickets for me and my teen who helped with the kids. It is a huge amount of work (done willingly!) and I would never begrudge a coordinator some small perk for putting in that effort. Yes, a mom may gripe, but then she can plan the next one! I don't base my actions on whether I will offend the occasional person - because I will probably offend someone not matter what I choose.
  15. Any suggestions for where you (collectively) print downloads or e-books of substantial length? I dl Expedition Earth - looks great - and close to 300 pages total. Many of them in color (maps, etc). Office supply stores are so expensive for color! I think my printer would catch spontaneously combust if I tried to print it..... Anyway, wanted to see what you gals do.... Thanks! Melinda TX
  16. Count me in. Can't make a decision to save my life. This is my 12th year to homeschool, and only have one at home this year. Good luck to all of us!!!!
  17. I bought ours here http://www.dharmatrading.com/ and then dyed them with a kool-aid recipe. They turned out GREAT. We did them probably 6 years ago and my two girls still utilize them for play and dress...
  18. Both of my Scout sons choked back tears and were sad when we left those first time family nights. Both boys stayed, however, and would not have traded it for anything. It takes a strong stomach sometimes to watch that, but unless they are in some real physical discomfort/danger, we have the boys stay. The sense of accomplishment was priceless. The oldest is now Eagle and the younger is working hard to get there!
  19. I have not read through all the responses...just going to give our story. My 14yodd dances in our church praise dance team, and they traveled to Germany last summer for two weeks. They are going again next week. Both trips cost around $2300, including airfare, meals, ground transport, etc. She sent out support letters, but also worked very hard to earn what she could. Last year it was babysitting and cleaning houses, and group fundraisers like car-washes, etc. This year she sold homemade bread and paid for a huge part of her trip with that. While I think the people of Germany benefitted from the team, what my daughter learned is that life is big outside of Texas (gasp!), and she can make a difference in someone's life. She is shy by nature, but she really stepped out and spoke with people and such. So - her future is full of opportunities she may have never dreamed of prior to these trips, and I think she will touch many lives in a positive way for the rest of her life.
  20. My teens have gone on longer trips without me, either because of expense or - in the case of a mission trip to Germany - I just didn't feel "called" to go. Regardless - one of our BEST fundraisers was selling homemade bread. My daughter offered apple-cinnamon, lemon-almond, and wheat for $10 a loaf. She raised nearly $800 in just a few months. Good luck and :grouphug: in your decision.
  21. Thanks for the help! I am bumping up just so others may answer as well.....
  22. Yes, most random question ever. My son is traveling to Germany (Geisenheim) next week as an exchange student. He would like to take salsa and queso as part of a gift to his hosts (we are in Texas, obviously) but not sure if it will be easy to find tortilla chips overseas. I don't get out much, as you can tell. Thanks in advance!! Melinda
  23. The one in Lewisville is the only HER store - the store in Duncanville closed a few years back. Winter hours for HER are 10-3, Monday - Saturday. The store is right off of Main Street, in Old Town Lewisville.
