  1. My favorite: on Facebook when someone tagged a former co-worker of mine in a photo: "Here's Susie and her 'awesome' teacher!" The thing is...she really isn't a great teacher, so it's both tragic and hilariously appropriate. :leaving:
  2. Happy to support this company! We have the giant timeline and the cards, and they have had so much use. I was so upset when I went back to purchase another and they were no longer available. Montessori Services has a timeline of life, but it's so expensive!
  3. Check out Harmony Fine Arts. I believe her artist and composer studies follow the history cycle! http://harmonyfinearts.org/grammar-stage-plans/ We are doing the same thing, but through a co-op so I'm not sure yet exactly which artists or composers we'll be covering. I'm also planning to use Homeschool in the Woods or Beautiful Feet History of Music to round things out. Hope that helps!
  4. I'm pretty sure the member here living on a boat is SeaConquest. I really enjoy this blog: http://zachaboard.blogspot.com. I don't think we would ever do it, but a life on the road (or water!) is fascinating!
  5. We are trying it out for third grade this year, and I can't wait!
  6. The only one that's not a reality show that I can think of is Seventh Heaven. Oh, and I think the Hallmark Channel has shown movies based on Christian novels. A friend of mine was telling me about one...When Calls the Heart? Another one! Call the Midwife features Anglican nuns.
  7. Isn't there a female celebrity with the name James? That might explain that. I do know someone who used James for her daughter's middle name, after her deceased FIL. The little girl has a flower for her first name. :)
  8. Nameberry was off about Asher for 2013, so I'm hoping they're wrong this year too. Lol! The CNN baby name trend thingy said it peaked in 2013, and would slide down from again there. We have three boys with "classic", yet popular names (top ten!), so I really thought we had done well with Asher, but they're popping up everywhere now! We've chosen biblical and saint names for first names and family names/saints for middles. Other than a poster here, I had never heard the name until reading the story of Jacob and Joseph with the boys! Ah, well. I still love it! ETA: Here are 2013's top names: http://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/
  9. Yeah, I know that, but this family didn't seem to. The mother had some very clear parameters about choosing a unique name that made it clear she didn't realize it's not an "unknown" name, and could easily make a comeback because of its place in pop culture.
  10. I know a baby Temperance too! She's six months old!
  11. I just started reading this thread, so someone else has probably said it, but I suspect Edith will revive. My niece just turned one, and yes, her nickname is Edi. No other name would suit her. She is an awesome Edith, and it doesn't scream old lady at all to me. :D I also know several baby Eloises (Ellie) and at least one Evelyn (Evie).
  12. My oldest read them all this spring at 7.5. He's read the books and listened to the audios 2-3 times so far. It's been all Harry, all the time. I had no intention of letting him read them all so quickly, it just happened! There's no doubt he doesn't fully understand all the themes, but I suspect he'll enjoy revisiting them several times, and will grow in understanding/appreciating them. No movies for now, though. We are pretty strict on limiting screens (both time and content). He's also read all the Narnia books in the last few months, and I would let him watch the older version of those before any of the HP films.
  13. My first copy of The Blue Castle fell apart, and a year ago I bought a new one. I can't bear to actually get rid of the original, though. I've had it nearly twenty years! I own every single one of LMM's books, and I read them all at least yearly. Definitely my favorite author.
  14. We are billed quarterly. I think we use around 13,000 gallons per quarter and pay $60-65. We are a family of six and wash cloth diapers 3x per week, but otherwise typical use. We don't water much, but during the hottest weather the kids sometimes use the sprinkler. Central NY, if that helps at all. 😀
  15. Four boys here...one is under two, so I'm not including him. :) Others are 3.5, 5.5, and 7.5. My third is exceptionally physically adept. He has done everything pretty early and easily, so the younger side of those ranges is usually him. I think there's a huge range. My boys are all neurotypical, and we promote early independence with our Montessori "prepared environment."
  16. I thought I was settled, except for schedule tweaking. And then...I was offered a job with the group we weren't planning to return to, and now...I'm back at square one basically for history/science/geography/arts. Writing (which isn't actually related to the above situation) has me spinning, when I thought I was settled. I just don't know if it's going to be a good fit for my DS8. The 3Rs for my first grader are easy enough, though, and set. Just keep on keeping on. (RSB, OPGTR, WWE1/HWOT)
  17. I'm using Memoria Press lists as some inspiration for read-alouds, and I have another list started for books related to history/science. Plus, I keep a running list of my favorites to share with the boys. :) I haven't decided exactly what I'm going to assign for independent reading, if anything. I might just strew good books around and let him pick and choose. He's an advanced reader, and interested in nearly everything.
  18. :iagree: I would look into some Montessori "work." Maybe the 1+1+1=1 website (http://www.1plus1plus1equals1.net/) or the book Mommy Teach Me by Barbara Curtis. Also the Play at Home Mom site and Facebook page has a lot of stimulating activities for really young babies and toddlers: http://www.playathomemomllc.com/
  19. We have sets 5100, 5101, and 5102: http://www.amazon.com/Stone-Age-Cave-with-Mammoth/dp/B004P5O8KE http://www.amazon.com/Playmobil-Mammoth-Skeleton-Cavemen-5101/dp/B004P5O8KO/ref=pd_bxgy_t_text_z http://www.amazon.com/PLAYMOBIL%C2%AE-5102-Saber-Toothed-with-Cavemen/dp/B004P5O8L8/ref=pd_bxgy_t_text_y I think they're discontinued now. I'll PM you. :)
  20. The Memoria Press lists have good choices too (some overlap, of course!): http://www.memoriapress.com/curriculum/classical-core-curriculum/junior-kindergarten-read-aloud-program http://www.memoriapress.com/curriculum/kindergarten-read-aloud-program
  21. I've posted before about our love of Playmobil, but alas, it was a very short lived love affair in our house. We invested in a lot of the big pieces, and I recently sold them all to another HS family (large castle, pyramid, Colosseum, ships, etc). All we have left are the Stone Age sets. No one seems to wants that! What I learned is that my boys love building and setting up, but for imaginative play, they prefer games where they are the players and their only props are playsilks and sticks. I also won't buy Lego sets that are more than plain bricks or large vehicles (like Technic). No sets: coast guard, police, airport, etc. So, it doesn't sound like that's the case for anyone is this thread, but just thought I'd throw it out there. They'll drool over the catalog and love to browse sets in our local specialty toy shop, but that's about as far as it goes.
  22. I don't have enough experience with other special needs to offer you advice, except to say that yes, my second son was slow to start talking, and had no other issues. He was early with all other milestones. His receptive language skills were high, and he barely qualified for EI. They took him because of the gap between his receptive and his expressive ability. His speech delay was kind of strange: he tried to talk on an inhale rather than an exhale. He also dropped most of his consonants. He started speech around 2.5 and was just under 4.5 when he was "discharged." No lingering issues. He's almost six now and reading, etc. He talks NON-STOP and is LOUD.
  23. I was perusing the site this morning, and noticed that the e-book collection is on sale today for $50, from $100. Not sure if that's as low as their sales typically go, but thought I would mention it if anyone is interested! I'm waffling, myself!
