Both of my twins have sleep apnea and both have ADHD-like behavior, although it has been officially ruled out by in-depth evals. We were told by the sleep specialists at CHC (Children's Hospital Colorado) that new research shows that as many as 50% of children diagnosed with ADHD actually had sleep apnea. Neither of my boys have dark circles or even snores much. The sleep study was first ordered by our new pediatrician when she saw the boys hyperactivity and inattention. She had read the newer research and said she never likes to refer for behavioral until she has ruled out medical problems behind the behavior. I was shocked they both had sleep apnea! We are now working on a treatment plan :)
I am not really behind the socialization thing, I was told that before by other drs about my boys, of course after they found out we homeschooled. Mine at least realize that other children act differently they just don't seem to be able to keep themselves acting more appropriately. (And at times don't care! Lol) I will also say that we have seen a HUGE connection with hyperactivity/inappropriate behavior and food allergies. Not only in my children but also my nephew. When my nephew was taken off a bunch of foods at 6, the changes were astounding! None of my kids test positively for food allergies but when you take them off of foods the allergies are quite clear.

I don't see any problem with early testing, I found it very helpful. I had my twins first evaluated at 3. They were definitely young and because of their issues and the age we were instructed to reevaluate again in two years. At 5 they had their first WISC done. We continued to have them done every other year until 10. At 10 we waited three years to have another eval and just had it in the last six months at 13. We had so many evals in part because we have never gotten complete diagnoses and in part becuase the the original diagnoses required follow up to get Rx for therapy continued.
The progression of evaluations has helped narrow down what is/were the issues. Even some of the more simple tests were helpful to me in finding ways to reach my children and help them learn. I will say that there definitely has been frustration related to having results that no one can define or having incomplete answers and that may happen, however I still feel that some answers rather than none is empowering.
ETA: PLEASE trust your intuition, no one else's! With one twin I have been insisting since 1 year old that there were serious issues, after a bazillion drs in several states, we finally have a dr who listened, made the correct referrals, and we now have a diagnosis of global static encephalopathy. Our current pediatrician could not believe no one had listened to me when she said the diagnosis was so obvious. You know! Better than anyone!

I am putting together our history curriculum for next year and decided to go at it myself to accommodate my children's issues better. I have my 2 spines and most of my supporting books except for these topics. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have found a few things online I think might work but I can't look at them. I would love to see some tried-and-true recommendations. Thank you!

As a sequential, type-A person I really like most of A Beka's products. The problem came in second grade when I discovered my children weren't going to be like me (when it came to learning anyway lol)! I have a child with learning disabilities, a child who can't sit still, and a child who needs LOTS of review and spiral teaching. It just wasn't working and learning was torture for them. So we switched and they loved school again. There was just way too much sitting, writing, and reading for them.
That being said, I will use their phonics program for our future children. It is excellent!
I agree with PPs about their History and Science. The views of history are... interesting, and we ARE conservative Christian so I didn't think it would be a problem. However primary sources don't support some of their views. Science was just way too much information, way too quickly.

Thank you so much for all of your replies! I am still undecided lol. I am going to try to look at them somewhere. I didn't realize there was a lot of writing, that is something two of my children struggle with.

Quick question: I am not quite sure with my children's ages/abilities if it is best to do Latina Christiana I or First Form Latin next. We are finishing up Prima Latina. The website says you should just do First Form Latin next but my twins are developmentally behind (see signature as to where they are). Does anyone have any suggestions?

....We can't save for kids' college, can't take vacations, can't hire a babysitter, are driving cars that are over ten years old ... just because our routine health care is so expensive.
And there's nothing we can do about it.
This is us.
We have children with rare medical issues. (DH says we will never win the lottery because we already did in diseases lol!) It is very difficult but I am glad that we have insurance through DH's job (Forbe's 500 company). He purposely applied to get in at a big company to better protect our health coverage and he puts up with a ton of crappy policies to keep the coverage. Even with a better-than-most-insurance, everything is going up more than normal this year and I don't know how we will pay for everything we are going to need: medical formula for feeding tubes, procedures that are necessary, etc. My only hope is that we just keep going more and more in debt but that the doctors and hospitals allow us to keep coming.
Prescriptions are where we will be screwed. They won't give them to us unless you pay up front and since some of them will be my child's food... We don't qualify for any help because we "make too much." Never mind that we spend most of our disposable income on healthcare. Each of my children has several hundred dollars in RX alone. I agree that if all, or even most, of my family was healthy, we would "make too much." That isn't the case however.

DS12 was just diagnosed with EoE three weeks ago. In every biopsy the eosinophils were over 100 and there is scarring in his esophagus. A week later all of his allergy testing (skin and blood) came back negative. This didn't particularly surprise our allergist as his twin has an autoimmune allergy disorder.
They have started him on the 6-food elimination diet. In the last three weeks he has lost 6 pounds. We saw a nutritionist and she helped us find some more fats to give him to try to keep his weight up. His weight has been steady for the last few days. We have also added in some Neocate powder into different foods to try to boost his calorie intake. However, it doesn't look like our insurance will pay for it at this point and we can't afford it without the insurance paying for it.
I know he is definitely not a worst case, but I feel overwhelmed at this moment. He was my only healthy child. I am a realist and would love to hear someone else's story. I would like to know what to expect and to hear that we aren't alone in this. :) Hopefully someone can share!

We are just starting Prima Latina. Two of my kids write only in cursive. They don't want to print their Latin exercises. I am sure this is a rather a dumb question but is cursive allowed?

I would like ideas too! School takes us forever. Although I think it tends to come from four kids, three of whom have special needs and none can work independently.
