  1. This!!! I just ( as in less than 12 hours ago!!!) went through this with my curious dd and her smartphone -:glare:. I am at a loss also...

OP - I know exactly how you feel and have the same struggles with what to do NOW???

Thanks for posting it's blessed me more than I can say.

    Vickie-

I am sorry you are dealing with this also. It just broke your heart didn't it? I have cried for 2 days-on and off of course.

Sadly, I wasn't raised Christian and had a mom who felt it the norm to put me on BC as soon as I was permitted to begin dating at 15. I have certainly learned, as we all should have, from how our parents raised us.

My prayers are with you and any parent facing this right now.

  2. There is a setting where you can block all images when on the net. I am doing this from memory, so you'll need to figure it out yourself...but if you go on web, then click on the little list thing in the R hand upper corner and select one of the settings....can't remember which. When you find the right menu there is a setting for "load images" click OFF. Even if the kid gets to a p* *n site, the images will not come up. Wish I found that feature sooner! :tongue_smilie:

Thanks for this so I can do it on DD's NOOK before anything like this happens with her.

  3. His innocence is not lost and he is not tarnished. Your son is not damaged goods ! He saw a bit of reality in a harsh way. It does not change who he is - he is still the same kid ! And he came and told you about it ! I would explain to him that many adults - including those who are not Christians - think this type of video is disgusting and would find it disturbing. His feelings are normal. I would say I was sorry he saw it and put measures in place to prevent it from happening again. But my opinion of my son would not change one bit.

I suppose I just feel as though he doesn't have that Christian view of sex now within the boundaries of a loving and respectful marriage because that is what we have taught him but he has now seen with his own eyes the ugliness of sinful sexual relations. That is what I mean by feeling as though his innocence is lost. I don't in any way shape or form think any less of him.

  4. So far some very good suggestions and ideas for computer safety as well as books on a Christian way of discussing this with him.

As you can imagine, I was brought to tears after we spoke and DS left my bedroom. I sat on my bed crying because his innocence is lost now. I don't doubt or question my raising of him because again, his curiosity is normal. I am simply saddened that he saw these things and is tarnished now by them.:crying:

  5. Oh moms please give advice and suggestions. I am truly floundering here.

Last night our 10 year old daughter was using her NOOK to pull up music videos on Youtube. A site she is not supposed to go to. So we had her and her almost 13 year old brother come into the room so we could discuss again internet safety and sites that are OK and sites that are not. I also explained to our son how I can go on his computer and see every site he has been on and what he is doing. Well over the next 20 minutes or so I guess his conscience got to him and he came to me. I am the sex educator in our home as hubby was never taught anything while growing up and has admitted to not having any clue how to have THOSE talks with either child.

Well low and behold DS explained that out of curiosity he did an internet search on Yahoo because he was curious about how people have sex and wound up on a site that was nothing but porn and showed actual couples having intercourse and women performing oral on men. He was quite sincere as tears welled in his eyes about how disgusting it all was and how he is very sad that he saw it.

My question to you all is how do I correct this from a Christian perspective as we are raising them as such and teaching them sex was created by God for marriage. Are there any books by reputable authors on how to work through something like this and help a tween boy understand the difference between porn/wordly lust and sin and God's design for the act of sexual intercourse?

Yes, we are placing blocks on his laptop and even considering removing it from his room and putting it in a public place within the home. Hubby of course wanted to smash it and punish him but I spoke gently to DS about how his curiosity is natural but in the future he needs to come to us for questions about these things.

    Thanks so much in advance!

  6. Well, I have found that in purchasing used to save money, sometimes you miss things. I am preparing to begin school Aug. 6th and got a used copy of Basic Cozy Grammar. Pages 27 and 28 are missing from the Guide. If anyone has this Guide, would you be willing to copy and mail me these two pages or scan and email them? I would so appreciate it and can reimburse for costs.

    Heather

  7. I know WP prefers and asks you not resell their exclusive items. I couldn't afford to purchase new from them and did manage to find a used Guide from someone.

It would appear that for the Make Your Own History book however that I am missing a couple pages. Does anyone have this Make Your Own book that wouldn't mind copying a couple pages and mailing them or scanning and emailing them? I can give details should anyone be willing to help me out.

    Thanks in advance.

  8. For those that are currently or have recently used Winterpromise's American Story 1...I am prepping for Week 1 and getting books together and the Guide mentions using "Wild West" for for reading and then using it for map work also. I am not finding this book in their catty and I got the Guide without any other books so could someone please help me determine what this Wild West book is?

So many grateful thanks in advance!!!!

  9. This is the route we are taking too the coming year!

I knew about the All American 1 program as of last week. Sadly, our budget is tight this year and I have been blessed to have gotten AS1 used even though WP asks you not to resell their exclusive items like the Guides or even offer to give their exclusives free with the purchase of the other program books that aren't exclusive. I don't agree whole heartedly with that but I understand why they ask that since they put so much work into their program. On the other hand, us on a tighter budget need to get what we can within our budget.

Anywho....that is why I am trying to make AS1 work for the going into 8th grader as well. I think I can if I beef up some of the reader items. I fell for WP and really want to use it this year with them both.

  10. For those of you that have posted here that are in MD, are you in the various Yahoo groups for your areas? Just checking because there are a couple really good ones. SMHN for southern MD and NCHE for northern MD'ers. There is also the BWHE for the Baltimore/Washington corridor.

  11. I did All American this year with a gr 6 and gr 1/2. It was pretty good. I do not like the style of the series of bios they used (Daniel Boone and Narcissa Whitman are off the top of my head) but its just personal preference there.

I never do any program as written but I like the book suggestions and I love the Time Traveller cds from AA.

I think if you want to bring a gr 8 along you could toss in the Hakim books and expect more writing.

Thanks for that input my dear. I am really thinking I can beef up AS1 since I purchased it used and simply love WP and can't afford to buy much directly from them. Most of the books they sell I either have or can find elsewhere dirt cheap at used book sales, etc...

I personally love the Daniel Boone and Narcissa Whitman books-the style is what I love the most about them. This is what makes home educating so wonderful, we all have differing opinions and can share them without(hopefully)worry of attack.

  12. I found the Winter Promise FAQ on American Crossing interesting: http://www.winterpromise.com/american_crossing_faq.html. They don't recommend American Story 1 for above Grade 3, but do suggest All American 1 if you have older and younger kids. All their reasonings is in the FAQ. I was wondering if American Crossing would work for younger children which is how I came across the FAQ.

Thanks for this. In all the hours I've spent pouring over their site, I didn't even see this.

  13. I just won the Chemistry 1 set off Ebay and am anxiously awaiting it's arrival. We are a Christian family but I prefer to keep our Bible time separate from the other subjects. Maybe I am in the minority here, and will :auto: quickly away before I get bashed for this but I don't want to drown my children in Creation and God. I know that true Christians would tell me that is wrong but...

Anyway, sorry to get a little off there. I think the program looks like a great alternative to some other rather drab science programs. We shall see though once we begin. I think ds13 is hoping Chemistry will mean blowing things up in the kitchen :001_huh:

We shall learn the program and it's author together.

  14. Thank you ladies both for the comments. Duhhhhhh....silly me never once thought about using American Crossing for them both instead. Don't know where my head was. :001_huh:

Well should I end up going that way, at least I got AS1 and it's contents cheaply enough used and can just keep it or resell the parts. AS1 looked good for 10 year old because as I mentioned, she loves crafting and doing all the hands on that program offers. Where as I don't think her 13 year old brother would care one bit about that aspect of any program. Right now he's all about gunslingers and the wild west.

  15. Ladies and possibly gentlemen-

I am using WP this coming year for what will be a 5th grader and 8th grader. I am using the American Story 1 for the 5th grader because she loves crafts and activities and this program is full of them which is a benefit.

I was thinking of ordering the American Crossing for the 8th grader but if anyone is familiar with this program or both actually, could you share the main differences with me and if there is any way I could beef AS1 up enough for the 8th grader in order to save some $$$$ this year? Do they essentially cover the same content and info.?

    Thanks in advance bunches!
