  1. This is timely. I was wondering the same thing as the OP. I've gone with it, and my 8 yo son seems to be catching on. But, the left to right thing definitely threw me for a loop!
  2. Yes, I was referring to the last name they have in common. I don't know if they are related.
  3. Mardel now sells AAS. If you sign up to get their emails, they'll notify you when they're having sales on homeschool materials, which is usually 20% off. That's how I got mine. They also send out 40% off coupons. I haven't noticed any restrictions on those coupons.

  5. I just finished The One World Schoolhouse by Sal Kahn. He writes about having students in a classroom setting use Kahn Academy for instruction and practice allowing kids to advance at their own pace and having teachers available to answer questions. I was thinking about using a similar approach at home. I know that there are lesson-by-lesson instructions for Singapore Level 3 (and other levels but this is the one I'm interested in) on Kahn Academy. I'm considering having my son follow his instruction videos and work the Kahn Academy practice problems as his primary math. I'd also have at least one day when he did math with me to make sure he's on track. He currently does nothing independently school-wise except some reading. I think doing independent work would be good for us both. Has anyone done anything similar?
  6. Have you looked at Dreambox? My son is in second grade and has been doing it for almost a year and enjoys it (although it can get challenging). I'm pretty sure it starts at the K level. IMO, it's a great supplement to a full math program. Dreambox used to be available at a discount through the Homeschool Buyer's Coop. I'm not sure if it still is or not, but it's worth checking out. If you go directly to the Dreambox website, you can also sign up for a 2-week free trial.
  7. My second grader is doing: Spelling - AAS level 3 Writing - WWE 2 Grammar - memorizing through Classical Conversations various parts of speech, the prepositions, helping verbs and linking verbs Reading - He reads aloud to me daily from a book that is a little beyond his reading level
  8. I love CC. My family has been involved for four years. However, I think music is more important and a better use for your $$$$.
  9. I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for the recommendation.
  10. Math: RightStart C and Dreambox (online) Spelling: All About Spelling--wrapping up Level 2 this month, then on to Level 3 Writing: WWE2 and Joy of Cursive Other Language arts: IEW Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization History: SOTW Ancients plus living books Music: Suzuki violin Science: Our weak point. I rely on Classical Conversations for experiments. We also occasionally read living books to support Classical Conversations memory work. Reading: I have him read to me daily from actual books and encourage him to read to himself (but he is reluctant to do this). Other Memory Work: Classical Conversations
  11. I have successfully canned multiple batches of jelly/jam, although I'm not an expert about the hows and whys. It is my understanding the sugar is the key for jams/jellies unless you use a no-sugar pectin.
  12. I don't go trick-or-treating with them, but once they get home, they are only allowed to keep 10 pieces of candy each and the rest goes to work with dad (after I skim off the Reese's for myself :)) . My kids are 5 and 8 this year. They've been okay with this in the past.
  13. My mom taught PS for over 20 years. She is neutral. She doesn't encourage or discourage me about it. It's weird, but she never brings up my kids' education at all.
