  1. I mentioned this and the lady sighed deeply and said she could pass that along but she didn't think it would matter and that really we shouldn't bother trying. I'm just thinking it was more work than she wanted. Though I'm not sure what that work would entail.
  2. I called the lady back and shocker! They had another troop for me. I asked why we weren't just placed with them to begin with (I've been talking to this one lady the whole time) and she said she doesn't know and that the new troop just popped up. Then she followed with "she's been doing this for 25 years so it should work well for you". I asked why we were told that there was only one troop we fit in and she went on a tangent about service units vs. troops and that I must not have understood that since we are new to the GS thing (not the case but oh well). I asked why GS, as a group, was allowed to meet there but that my one kiddo who is part of said group isn't. She gave me a bunch of random reasons (none of which are applicable to homeschooling) and made it clear that she'd rather just shuffle us to someone else. I think, in the end, she jsut didn't want the apparent hassle that we are. Who knows. On the plus side there is another homeshcooler contacting the leader we've been shifted to who has 2 little girls the same age range as Kid 1. Just based on the 15 min. phone call I had with her this is all actually a good thing. I have a feeling we would have come into lots of small "issues" over the next little bit.
  3. There aren't any other troops we can join. Apparently they abide by school district boundaries pretty strictly. There is a homeschooling troop about 25 min. from me. I've considered starting my own troop but my sister did it a year or so agoand man that is daunting. I might have to though.
  4. We moved to Georgia back in April and since Kid 1 was turning 6 in May I got on the ball and contacted a girl scout leader. It took some figuring out but they eventually got me in contact with the leader(s) that presides over my area. I have been telling them since May that we homeschool. So last night was the parent meeting. I paid all my dues and got all the paperwork filled out and listened to what they had to say. Apparently meetings are from 2:30-3:30 in the afternoon and the leaders pick the girls up individually from their classrooms at the local school. I asked how this would work for drop offs for us and they all just stared at me blankly and then told me they'd have to ask the principal. I just got a voicemail saying that Kid 1 can't be placed in this troop because the arrangment between troops and the school don't allow for non-attending students to be there for on campus meetings (which all of them are from the sounds of it). I have a feeling we are going to be told we have to do the solitary route (which is very much not what Kid 1 wants). We have to report to our local district in order to homeschool here. I was just talkingto my sister about it and she thought that in cases like that you were allowed to be part of groups that used campus things. Is that true? My google skills are lacking today and I'm not finding anything. Any links or info would be awesome. I need to call the troop leader back and figure things out so having something would rock.
  5. Thanks for that link! I admit....the wording of the link I posted has me a bit nervous. I'm coming from a state very lax so seeing I had to do reporting and what not caught me off guard. Do you need to fill out the intent form yearly?
  6. We are going to be moving here soon to Georgia so I googled the homeschooling laws tonight. I know they can change often so I'd thought I'd double check. This is the link I read: Click Do those seem current/correct? I know everywhere/place is different but has anyone had a hard time with their superintendent or reporting (especially on the instruction hours)?
  7. I'm pretty sure kid 1 is dyslexic. We are going to see about getting her tested (DH is as well and from what I was reading she has it pretty strong) but in the meantime I'm rethinking our curriculum. A friend mentioned that Calvert has something geared for it. I didn't know that and I've looked at them a ton! Has anyone used it? Did you like it? Was it worth the cost? Any other curriculums geared for that? I know next to nothing about dyslexia.
  8. Thanks ladies! I knew there had to be one around somewhere. I tried searching last night but was finding reviews more than anything. Off to look at that link.
  9. I've been reconsidering going the Ambleside route with kid 1 lately. I was just re-reading the info and noticed that Kindergarten doesn't have a schedule. I get why but does anyone have one? I'm far to new at this to just wing it. I want the comfort of a schedule. :tongue_smilie:
  10. Bear with me. I'm a newbie to both homeschooling and active posting. :) I know, from searches I've done in the past, that most aren't in love with boxed curriculums. For my first year (kindergarten) though that's what we've decided to go with. I'm super excited about not having to put it all together and can just jump in. Originally, I wanted Calvert. I read a few reviews here that didn't seem to be in love with it. I eventually found Timberdoodle and wanted that one (hard to find a secular boxed curriculum!). Dh and I were talking tonight about when I could order it and I made the mistake of looking around again. I know better. Really, I do. :smilielol5:Anyhow, I'm back to wanting Calvert. Can anyone compare the two for me? Calvert seems more in depth but I want to say most of what I read said it was busy work. The eldest will smother me with the scrap paper if I try to only do busy work with her. I've been reading reviews all night but as with anything, I can find just about any review to fit my current mood.
  11. I have a couple! We have an employee that goes by M.J. His name is Micheal Jackson and prefers M.J. since he's a pasty white boy and hates the inevitable, "but you're white!" comments he gets. I thought his name was M.J. until DH told me. Not a weird one but life makes it hard. He's old enough that it's not a huge issue with his age group but young enough older people and now younger ones LOVE making comments. There is also a Micheal Jackson in the town I live in. He's quite the "legacy" because he also happens to be the only black man in our community. The local drunks just LOVE to say they know Micheal Jackson. Gag me with a spoon. :) I went o na trip to visit my sister back when DD1 was about a year old. I ended up taking a GreyHound and got stuck next to the most obnoxious and chatty woman. She had a daughter about the same age that she had named Tuesday. This was the first I had ever come across that name (though later found out it's one of the more "common" weekday names..who knew?). I asked her why and she said that when she had her she didn't have a name choice in mind and she was born on a Tuesday so why not? That one still baffles me. Always makes me think of Wednesday from The Addams Family. My sil's younger sister is McKinley. Their parents (who are awesomely nutty in an entertaining way :D) liked using maps and phonebooks to find names. They'd also use world leaders for inspiration. It totally fits the girl too. As for Nickerbocker, I'm in the US and know of it. Heck, my little brother is Nicholas and Nickerbocker is his nickname. I agree with the pp on initials. When we pick names I aim for ones that cannot be shortened (if you want to call your kid Jenn than why not just name them Jenn!) and don't end up with funky initials. Funny how many urban myths are on this thread. I got my hair colored back in Sept. and the lady who was doing it knows someone who knew Lemonjello and Orangejello. I had to bite my tounge to keep from groaning. Those jello's sure do get around.
  12. Ok, I have read every single possible review out there and I'm still not sure. Well I am but I'm not. :) I decided to google pre-k homeschool curriculums this evening and found Calvert and was totally loving the site and information and sample pages etc. It seemed the couple threads/posts I read about it were glowing. I was im'ing with a friend who knew someone who used it and they loved it. Lots o' love. So then I started reading reviews and now I'm second guessing myself. I am going for a boxed curricuum for the structure for our first year. I am a tad OCD and NEED that structure...that "do this here and in this way" until we figure out our flow and what we want curriculum wise. DD1 is dying for school of some sort (DSS goes to public school and so part of it jealousy and part of it is him constantly playing up the "school" thing...) and I am wanting to get her started with something. This seems like it would be a good fit. I've read so many reveiws though that it's a waste of time and money. That kids get easily bored. That the reading portion is less than ideal. For the cost of it I don't want to be kicking myself at the end of using it yk? I realize that I won't just find my magic perfect curriculum and that there is going to be a period of trial and error but at almost $300 I want more trial than error. So, for a pre-k is it that bad? I know I could likely find each piece cheaper etc. but like I said, I don't want that yet. I want to just have it handed to me in the beginning and then go from there. They have payment plans which is a huge appeal to me!
  13. Ok I have to share mine. :) My sister made it for me and it was her first dress. I LOVE how it turned out. It ended up different than the pattern but we were going for that. ;) My pics are kind of hard to see but the ones that show the final fitting aren't accurate since we changed up the train afterwards. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v428/Lizabethian/Wedding%20photos/?action=view&current=CassieandBeto3.jpg http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v428/Lizabethian/Wedding%20photos/?action=view&current=CassieandBeto2.jpg My computer is freaking out and not letting me do anything but put those links in. Sorry about that. The first is what it looked like from the back and the second is from the side and you can kind of see the detail of the knot on my train and the detail on the top of the dress. Yes my back is red and splotchy. What can I say? I'm a nervous sort of gal. You should have seen my chest. Oh yeah. 2004. And I want to say the pattern was originally a McCalls though I can't remember. And I wore blue fuzzy slippers.
